The Power of Talk : Creating Space for Social Interaction to Build Stress-Resilience

Engfeldt, Aurora January 2020 (has links)
Mental health issues are an increasing public health problem in Sweden and the most common reason for sick leave. As many preventive measures take a reactive approach, this thesis argues for more preventive work done at an earlier stage. Even though young adults and students feel more stress than other groups, there is a lack of preventive measures for this group. To build stress-resilience in society long term, thus minimizing sick leave, this thesis suggest an enhanced focus on stress prevention for young adults and students. Umeå, with its young population, being the context. By focusing on how architecture can facilitate early stress prevention through social interaction, the thesis’ purpose is to investigate what further aspects and spatial tools could be relevant for preventing negative stress.    Combined with desk-based research, the investigative method has been the architect’s tool of talk, socially interacting with context relevant users and actors. The process included: 1) mapping of a student association, 2) informal group interviews through podcast sessions, set in different spatial contexts, 3) raising and discussing issue with a potential actor and 4) experiencing an existing preventive measure in context. During these moments, spatial aspects relevant for preventing negative stress were collected.   Complementing social interaction, the most commonly discussed aspects, with previous studies of being stress preventive, were knowledge and nature. Having established these three main themes, facilitating architectural tools could be identified.    The findings from the explorative method results in an architectural proposal including a city scale concept and a permanent building program. The city scale concept suggest a permanent-mobile building relationship for flexibility in reach and continued spatial investigations around the city enabling for further improvements. The building program suggests different levels of social interaction integrated by the stress relieving architectural tools.   This thesis finds that by integrating spatial tools facilitating social interaction, knowledge and nature, it is possible to create spatial conditions for early preventing negative stress. The thesis also provides a potential strategy for finding spatial tools answering to an issue in society.   As younger generations are more immersed in digital space, this thesis suggests future studies on the relationship between digital and physical space in relation to social interaction.

Fighting corruption in the South African public sector with special reference to costs and impact

Balia, Daryl M. 28 February 2005 (has links)
Corruption, understood as the misuse of public office for private gain, has become a matter of global concern. Numerous measures being taken, not least in South Africa, to contain its spread are increasingly regarded as attempts in "fighting corruption". The South African public sector provides the context for this study where manifestations of corrupt behaviour may be observed and analysed. Particular attention is given to the role, relevance and costs which, as this study shows, must first be calculated in monetary terms as a fiscal end in order for the task of fighting corruption to produce a sustainable impact. The national strategy developed by the South African government has been compromised by the absence of sufficient resources being committed from the national fiscus for its implementation. It is misleading to assume that new laws and tighter regulations will of themselves serve to deter corrupt practices. One notices a plethora of public administration reforms being initiated to control and prevent corruption in line with international best practice. Yet, as this study concludes, such efforts even at higher fiscal cost will not necessarily contribute to reduced corruption. No attempt should be made to create a situation of a "zero tolerance" level of corruption as this is not possible. Ultimately, the challenge for the South African public sector is to seek ways of rationalising existing resources such that a single agency led by someone with moral authority can be vested with powers to lead the fight against corruption. / Public Administration / (D. A socio- educative analysis of aggressive behaviour displayed by adolescent girls

Gouws, Cheryl 06 1900 (has links)
The successful social development of adolescent girls is dependent on the acquisition of the skills required to face the challenges of adult life. Young girls are faced with the problem of a growing aggressive behaviour displayed by the girls who are supposedly their friends. This aggressive behaviour may negatively affect social, psychological or emotional development, possibly resulting in long term social adjustment problems. This investigation identifies the types and causes of aggressive behaviour displayed by adolescent girls, with the intention of ultimately identifying strategies to address aggressive behaviour. The implementation of a schoolbased approach, including all sectors involved in the education of the child in a whole-school programme to address aggressive behaviour, is recommended. Including all parties, firmly committed to addressing aggressive behaviour from a preventative perspective, may result in reducing aggressive behaviour and possibly provide adolescent girls with the coping skills required for successful social development. / Educational Studies / M.Ed. How to utilise marketing opportunities in a highly regulated environment : the veterinary industry

King, Philip Albert 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The veterinary industry is operating in a highly regulated environment. Up till now these regulations prevented veterinarians to freely market veterinary services, especially professional services. Every business person in the biggest part of the world is subject to free-market economic pressures. However in the case of the professional, who is also a business person, these economic market-pressures could become very intense and unbalanced, and lead to what is called the “professional dilemma” (Du Preez, 2003: 8). Professional persons are governed by their respective codes of conduct. Those professionals who practice as entrepreneurs therefore need to be more business skilled and creative to successfully manage their businesses as they do not have the luxury of utilising the normal business strategies and options. The state of professionalism within the veterinary profession in South Africa in terms of entrepreneurship has been addressed in the past, but there is still a major gap in terms of providing business tools to managers in the veterinary industry. The biggest challenge in terms of the general business functions faced by veterinarians is the marketing function, thus the reason for this study. It is necessary that the highly regulated environments of professionals being understood. Therefore the research has been conducted by highlighting these environments. The researcher then continues to analyse the internal and external environment, client needs and customer profile in order to identify ways of optimising marketing opportunities. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die veeartseny industrie word bedryf in ‘n hoogs gereguleerde omgewing.

Rôle du Transforming Growth Factor-β (TGFβ) au cours de la tumorigenèse pancréatique / Role of Transforming Growth factor beta during pancreatic tumorgenesis

Vincent, David 05 October 2012 (has links)
The TGFβ (Transforming Growth Factor-β) belongs to a wide family of cytokinesinvolved in numerous functions during embryogenesis and adult life. During tumorigenesis,TGFβ is considered as a double-edge-sword preventing tumor initiation in normal orimmortalized epithelia but, in contrast, facilitating tumor progression in transformedepithelia. We have studied this dual functionality of TGFβ in Pancreatic DuctalAdenocarcinoma (PDAC), a devastating disease representing the fifth leading-cause ofrelated-cancer death in industrialized countries. Most of pancreatic cancers present activatingKras oncogene mutations, high expression level of secreted TGFβ and inactivating mutationsof affecting major mediators of the TGFβ signaling. The main objective of my thesis was tounderstand the role of TGFβ during pancreatic tumorigenesis using genetically modifiedmouse models, then mimicking the human disease. First, we showed that targeted activationof TGFβ signaling in the pancreas could cooperate with Kras oncogene to induce pancreatitis,an inflammation of the pancreas described as a tumor-promoting environment. Second, wedemonstrated the tumor suppressor role of TIF1γ, a protein recently involved in the TGFβsignaling. In conclusion, this work has contributed to a better understanding of the molecularmechanisms responsible for pancreatitis initiation. Our results open new therapeuticsperspectives leading to the inhibition of the TGFβ-mediated program of thus inhibiting prooncogeniceffect of pancreatitis. Moreover, we defined a new tumor suppressor pathwayactivated in the pancreas. The molecular characterization of programs engaged by TIF1γcould allow defining new therapeutic strategies.

Strategies for Preventing and Mitigating the Effects of Agro-food Supply Chain Disruptions

Muzvondiwa, Everjoyce 01 January 2017 (has links)
Supply chain disruptions are detrimental to the performance of companies due to the associated loss of profitability and reduced sustainability. In 2016, organizations lost at least $1.2 million in a single supply chain disruption. Guided by the contingency theory of fit, the purpose of this exploratory multiple case study was to explore the strategies agribusiness managers use to prevent and mitigate the effects of disruptions in the agro-food supply chains. A total of 5 purposefully-selected agribusiness managers from Harare, Zimbabwe participated in semistructured interviews. Participants were senior agribusiness managers who implemented successful strategies for preventing and mitigating the effects of disruptions in agro-food supply chains. Three themes emerged from the thematic analysis of interview data and review of organizational documents: collaboration among supply chain partners, business continuity management, and the use of a multiple supplier base. Agribusiness managers must first understand the sources of disruption risk, assess the impact of the risk, and then select an appropriate strategy based on the level of uncertainty and risk. By managing the risks effectively, managers can improve the performance and competitiveness of their businesses. The implications for positive social change may include a reduction in supply chain costs, provision of better services and products to consumers, and lower prices of agro-food products to consumers which could lead to an improvement in the lives of consumers.

PREVENIRE LA CORRUZIONE: NUOVE STRATEGIE REGOLATORIE TRA PUBBLICO E PRIVATO

GULIZZI, ELISA 21 April 2020 (has links)
The aim of the research is to study interaction between different levels of governance in the anti-corruption sector. Firstly, the domestic law, especially in the anti-corruption field is strongly influenced by international instruments. The Italian system, for example, starts out from the Anti-Corruption Law, Law No. 190 (the so called "Severino Law", approved by Parliament on 6 November 2012, entering into force on 28 November 2012, and implemented by several regulations). This Law was adopted to implement the UN Convention against Corruption. Secondly, the research aims to study interaction between public and private sector: fundamental concepts for corruption prevention, such as risk management, have been borrowed from one sector to another. Finally, there many players in the anti-corruption sector who are able to create rules (lawmakers, stakeholders, Authorities): the question is if they are part of a virtuous circle in which regulation and enforcement are closely linked. In order to prevent corruption, the law-making process must be based on specific criteria such as flexibility, stakeholder participation and ongoing evaluation of its effectiveness.
