Social Information Processing, Cortisol Secretion, and Aggression in Adolescents

While both social information processing and cortisol secretion in childhood aggression have generated a great deal of interest and research in the past few decades, these social-cognitive and physiological components of aggressive behavior have not been examined in the context of an integrative model. This lack of an integrative framework may underlie some of the inconsistencies that have plagued the literature in this area to date, especially with respect to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis functioning in aggressive children. This investigation tested a mediational model of the relationship between social-information processing, cortisol secretion, and reactive and proactive aggression. Specifically, it was hypothesized that social-information processing variables would mediate the proposed relationship between reactive and proactive aggression and cortisol secretion. One hundred and twenty-six children between the ages of 13 and 18 were administered the Child Behavior Rating Form (CBR), the Home Interview with Child (HIC), the Response Decision and Social Goals Instrument (RDSGI), the Antisocial Processes Screening Device (APSD), the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI), the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), and the Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS). Each child also contributed two samples of saliva for cortisol assay, and each child's teacher completed a teacher-version of the APSD and the CBR. Regression analyses revealed no significant associations between proactive or reactive aggression and cortisol secretion, or between any of the social-information processing variables and cortisol secretion. Predicted associations between proactive and reactive aggression and social-information processing variables were found. Overall, therefore, the mediational model was not supported. However, cortisol secretion was found to be associated with both anxiety and depression, and exploratory analyses revealed significant associations between cortisol secretion and Psychopathy as measured by the APSD. Taken together, the findings suggest that while the specific relationship proposed here among social-cognitive, psychophysiological, and behavioral variables was not found, an integrative model examining each of these components may be useful in further investigations of the complex phenomenon of childhood aggression. / Ph. The Relationship Among Organizational Justice, Trust, and Role Breadth Self-Efficacy

The purpose of this study was to examine whether organizational practices' fairness (also known as organizational justice) and trustâ contribute to the enhancement of role breadth self-efficacy (RBSE), a form of proactive behavior. The sample consisted of 226 white-collar professionals in large and small organizations. Approximately 70% held a college degree. An a priori path model based on theoretical literature was generated to represent causal relationships among the variables. Two paths were explored: a) the relationship among procedural justice, trust in organization, and RBSE; and b) the relationship among interactional justice, trust in supervisor, and RBSE. Findings indicated a statistically significant relationship between procedural justice and trust in organization. The relationships between procedural justice and RBSE and trust in organization and RBSE were not significant. Interactional justice had a statistically significant relationship with trust in supervisor, but not with RBSE. The relationship between trust in supervisor and RBSE was not significant. Respondents expressed a strong trust in their organization, and a stronger trust in their immediate supervisor. The most important discovery in this study was the statistically significant relationship between education and RBSE. Individuals with graduate degrees reported the highest level of RBSE, followed by people with Bachelor's degrees. Globalization and technology are fueling demands for ever-increasing employee skills and higher levels of education. Organizations need highly educated, proactive individuals in order to be successful. Future research should continue to investigate variables and constructs that may enhance RBSE in the workplace. / Ph. D.

Teacher Training In A Proactive Approach To Classroom Behaviour Management: Teacher and Student Outcomes

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of a brief teacher training program in proactive classroom management (PCM), on both teacher and student outcomes. The teacher training program was conducted in a large, inner city public school and was designed as an efficient and cost-effective approach to assisting school personnel in the prevention of off-task and disruptive student behavior. Four groups of teachers (N=16) participated in a single, 4-hour workshop that focused on didactic and performance-based training of such PCM procedures as building rapport, priming for transitions, scaffolding for success, building child tolerance to classroom stressors and teaching replacement behaviours. The program was implemented using a multiple baseline design across groups of teachers. Data were collected through classroom observations of teacher skill implementation and student behaviour (two students in each classroom who presented with behavioural challenges were observed), as well as pre and post self-report rating scale measures of teacher attributions and perceptions and student behaviour. Visual and statistical analyses of group and overall teacher data revealed significant increases in the use of reinforcement and antecedent strategies, reported use of rewards as an intervention strategy, reported levels of confidence in their ability to manage student misbehaviour, and a shift in teachers’ views of student misbehaviour as being more temporary rather than chronic. Significant decreases in teacher reactive responses and reported levels of student inattention and overactivity were also demonstrated. With respect to students, visual and statistical analyses of group and overall data revealed increases in student on-task non-disruptive behaviour and reported levels of self-reliance. Student disruptive and off-task behaviour were significantly reduced. Despite several limitations, the results of the present study demonstrate that student problem behaviour can be efficiently and effectively managed in the classroom without the use of reactive strategies.

Proactive Privacy Practices in the Trend of Ubiquitous Services: An Empirical Study

Privacy is a strategic issue so that much attention has been constantly devoted to information privacy in response to competitive pressure in dynamic marketplace, particularly in the trend of e-business settings. Ubiquitous services (u-services) are recognized as the logical extension of e-/m-services because they can be initiated by e- and further propagated by m-services (Junglas & Watson 2006). In u-services context, customers are always connected seamlessly in context-awareness networks so the higher degree of customized and personalized services can be timely served. Likewise, customers may also well be aware of privacy threats behind that. Consequently, privacy issues are identified as a key hindrance for booming u-services. While a large body of studies focusing on privacy issues have examined relevant factors influence customer decision making such as customer beliefs (i.e. trust and risk), privacy concerns, the representations of privacy statement, and even the privacy calculus, this study aims to explore a theoretical proactive privacy practice model (PPPM) as a guideline for an e-services provider (ESP) initiating its privacy practices to its customers to enhance voluntary information disclosure. Drawing upon integrative social contracts theory, the proposed PPPM embraced technical and non-technical elements such as human, legal, and economic relevant perspectives, that is, e-services providers¡¦ proactive privacy governance, and customer perceived value and competitive strategies for u-services. An empirical survey was conducted in a B2C e-services context to examine the relationships among these constructs. The results indicate that there are significant relationships between those three antecedents and disclosure willingness respectively. Meanwhile, the moderating effect of competitive strategies significantly and positively associates with proactive privacy governance and disclosure willingness. These findings not only broaden current knowledge of the disclosure behavior but also allow ESPs to strategically manage privacy and leverage privacy protection for a competitive advantage and identify the strengths and weaknesses of their current privacy mechanisms, guiding them to develop more proactive and prominent privacy practices for extending their businesses to future u-services or u-businesses.

Les PME jouent un rôle important dans l’économie Mexicaine et elles sont une source d’emplois locaux pour le pays. Mais leur durée de vie est menacée parce qu’elles ont des difficultés à se maintenir en activité et à développer une performance sociale et économique en face des exigences toujours plus grandes de compétitivité entraînées par la mondialisation. Cependant, une de leurs qualités est la flexibilité qui s’accompagne souvent d’une structure familiale. Le dernier aspect n’est pas sans présenter des inconvénients quant à l’attitude des dirigeants et leur mode de sélection et d’apprentissage qui ne privilégie pas les qualités de négociateur. Ceci génère souvent des structures centralisées ne favorisant pas la recherche de consensus avec les autres acteurs de l’entreprise ainsi que des comportements participatifs tant individuels qu’entre les groupes.Les PME constituent le champ de recherche ; car le problème primordial des PME est l’absence de prévision sur le futur de l’entreprise. Le propriétaire-dirigeant de la PME est totalement concentré sur l’activité opérationnelle à court terme, au détriment des activités à plus forte valeur ajoutée et des réflexions stratégiques, principalement sur le développement du potentiel humain parce qu’il constitue un levier de changements socio-économiques capital pour l’avenir de l’entreprise.Notre hypothèse de recherche consiste à proposer des voies d’amélioration de leur niveau de compétitivité internationale par la formulation de stratégies proactives qui auront pour effet de diminuer les coûts cachés et de contribuer au développement socio-économique de l’organisation.Pour le recueil de données de recherche, nous appliquons une méthodologie de recherche-intervention dans trois PME mexicaines, à partir d’une observation scientifique de la gestion et de l’interactivité cognitive entre l’intervenant-chercheur et tous les acteurs de l’organisation y compris le propriétaire-dirigeant. L’objectif de la recherche-intervention, dans la théorie socio-économique est de générer une transformation profonde des les structures et des comportements des PME. / SME play a big role in the mexican economy and they are a source of local employment for the country. But their lifespan is threatened because they havedifficulties of being maintained in activity and to develop a social and economic performance opposite the increasingly larger requirements of competitiveness pulled by globalisation. However, one of their qualities and reflection is often accompanied by a family structure. The last aspect is not presenting advantages as for the attitude of the leaders and their mode of selection and training which does not privilege qualities as a negotiator.This often generates centralized structures not supporting research of consensus with the other actors of the company as well as participative behaviors so much individual which enters the groups. SME constitute the research field; because the paramount problem of SME is the absence of forecast on the future of the company. The owner-leader of SME is completely concentrated on the short-term operational activity, with the detriment of the activities with stronger added value and the strategic reflections, mainly on the development of the human resources because it constitutes a lever of socio-economicchanges for the future of the company. Our assumption of research consists in proposing ways of improvement of their level ofinternational competitiveness by the formulation of proactive strategies which willcause to reduce the hidden costs and to contribute to the socio-economic developmentof the organization. For the collection of data of research, we apply a methodology of research-intervention in three Mexican SME, starting from a scientific observation of management and cognitive interactivity enters the speaker-researcher and all the actors of theorganization including the owner-leader.The objective of the research-intervention, in the socio-economic theory is to generate amajor transformation as of the structures and behaviors of SME.

Peuvent-ils les objectifs d'innovation amener le comportement innovatif au travail ? : évaluation d'un modèle motivationnel pour l'innovation / Can goal-directed regulatory processes lead to innovative performance? : testing a motivational model of innovation

Cette thèse vise à appliquer la théorie de la régulation en fonction des objectifs à l’analyse du comportement innovant au travail. Après avoir examiné l’état de l’art de la littérature sur l’innovation (premier chapitre), nous avons mené trois études empiriques sur des échantillons différents. Dans la première étude (deuxième chapitre), nous avons supposé et montré que la génération proactive des objectifs – incluant les processus de projection et de planification – était positivement liée au comportement innovant, et que l’engagement affectif, en interagissant avec la flexibilité du rôle ou avec le soutien du leader à l’innovation, modérait positivement cette relation. Dans la deuxième étude (troisième chapitre), nous avons proposé et montré que la planification médiatisait la relation entre la projection et l’innovation, et que l’habilitation psychologique et le soutien du leader à l’innovation modéraient positivement la relation entre la projection et la planification. Enfin, dans la troisième étude (quatrième chapitre), nous avons supposé et démontré que l’orientation d’apprentissage, le climat d’équipe pour l’innovation, et la variété dans la tâche stimulaient la performance innovante indirectement, à travers la médiation de la projection et de la planification, et que l’orientation d’apprentissage renforçait la relation entre la planification et l’innovation. Les implications théoriques et pratiques de nos études sont traitées dans la discussion générale. / The present dissertation aims at applying goal regulation theory to the study of innovative work behaviour. After reviewing the state-of-the-art of innovation literature (first chapter), we conducted three empirical studies on distinct samples. In the first study (second chapter), we hypothesized and found that proactive goal generation – which includes envisioning and planning processes – was positively related to innovative behaviour, and that affective commitment, interacting with production ownership or, alternatively, with leader support for innovation, strengthened this relationship. In the second study (third chapter), we proposed and showed that planning mediated the link between envisioning and innovation, and that psychological empowerment and team support for innovation positively moderated the relationship between envisioning and planning. Finally, in the third study (fourth chapter), we theorized and demonstrated that learning goal orientation, psychological climate for innovation, and task variety enhanced innovative performance indirectly through the mediation of envisioning and planning, and that learning goal orientation amplified the relationship between planning and innovation. Theoretical and practical implications of our works are addressed in the general discussion.

L’amélioration des performances des systèmes sans fil 5G par groupements adaptatifs des utilisateurs / Performance improvement of 5G Wireless Systems through adaptive grouping of users

5G est prévu pour s'attaquer, en plus d'une augmentation considérable du volume de trafic, la tâche de connecter des milliards d'appareils avec des exigences de service hétérogènes. Afin de relever les défis de la 5G, nous préconisons une utilisation plus efficace des informations disponibles, avec plus de sensibilisation par rapport aux services et aux utilisateurs, et une expansion de l'intelligence du RAN. En particulier, nous nous concentrons sur deux activateurs clés de la 5G, à savoir le MIMO massif et la mise en cache proactive. Dans le troisième chapitre, nous nous concentrons sur la problématique de l'acquisition de CSI dans MIMO massif en TDD. Pour ce faire, nous proposons de nouveaux schémas de regroupement spatial tels que, dans chaque groupe, une couverture maximale de la base spatiale du signal avec un chevauchement minimal entre les signatures spatiales des utilisateurs est obtenue. Ce dernier permet d'augmenter la densité de connexion tout en améliorant l'efficacité spectrale. MIMO massif en TDD est également au centre du quatrième chapitre. Dans ce cas, en se basant sur les différents taux de vieillissement des canaux sans fil, la périodicité d'estimation de CSI est supplémentaire. Nous le faisons en proposant un exploité comme un degré de liberté supplémentaire. Nous le faisons en proposant une adaptation dynamique de la trame TDD en fonction des temps de cohérence des canaux hétérogènes. Les stations de bases MIMO massif sont capables d'apprendre la meilleure politique d’estimation sur le uplink pour de longues périodes. Comme les changements de canaux résultent principalement de la mobilité de l'appareil, la connaissance de l'emplacement est également incluse dans le processus d'apprentissage. Le problème de planification qui en a résulté a été modélisé comme un POMDP à deux échelles temporelles et des algorithmes efficaces à faible complexité ont été fournis pour le résoudre. Le cinquième chapitre met l'accent sur la mise en cache proactive. Nous nous concentrons sur l'amélioration de l'efficacité énergétique des réseaux dotes de mise en cache en exploitant la corrélation dans les modèles de trafic en plus de la répartition spatiale des demandes. Nous proposons un cadre qui établit un compromis optimal entre la complexité et la véracité dans la modélisation du comportement des utilisateurs grâce à la classification adaptative basée sur la popularité du contenu. Il simplifie également le problème du placement de contenu, ce qui se traduit par un cadre d'allocation de contenu rapidement adaptable et économe en énergie. / 5G is envisioned to tackle, in addition to a considerable increase in traffic volume, the task of connecting billions of devices with heterogeneous service requirements. In order to address the challenges of 5G, we advocate a more efficient use of the available information, with more service and user awareness, and an expansion of the RAN intelligence. In particular, we focus on two key enablers of 5G, namely massive MIMO and proactive caching. In the third chapter, we focus on addressing the bottleneck of CSI acquisition in TDD Massive MIMO. In order to do so, we propose novel spatial grouping schemes such that, in each group, maximum coverage of the signal’s spatial basis with minimum overlapping between user spatial signatures is achieved. The latter enables to increase connection density while improving spectral efficiency. TDD Massive MIMO is also the focus of the fourth chapter. Therein, based on the different rates of wireless channels aging, CSI estimation periodicity is exploited as an additional DoF. We do so by proposing a dynamic adaptation of the TDD frame based on the heterogeneous channels coherence times. The Massive MIMO BSs are enabled to learn the best uplink training policy for long periods. Since channel changes result primarily from device mobility, location awareness is also included in the learning process. The resulting planning problem was modeled as a two-time scale POMDP and efficient low complexity algorithms were provided to solve it. The fifth chapter focuses on proactive caching. We focus on improving the energy efficiency of cache-enabled networks by exploiting the correlation in traffic patterns in addition to the spatial repartition of requests. We propose a framework that strikes the optimal trade-off between complexity and truthfulness in user behavior modeling through adaptive content popularity-based clustering. It also simplifies the problem of content placement, which results in a rapidly adaptable and energy efficient content allocation framework.

Dans un contexte où le monde du travail s’internationalise et où l’innovation est fondamentale, les organisations d’aujourd’hui doivent structurer le travail en tenant compte des distances géographiques et du besoin de bien performer dans les tâches reliées aux différents projets. Toutefois, le recours à des projets innovants et l’accès à des moyens de communication ne sont pas des conditions suffisantes pour assurer une performance adéquate. Différents facteurs, comme les compétences adaptées au travail virtuel et le degré de virtualité qui sépare les gens, doivent être pris en compte pour favoriser l’atteinte d’une bonne performance. De plus, afin de sélectionner les candidats qui seront en mesure de bien performer dans ce contexte, le recours à des outils d’évaluation appropriés et disponibles dans plusieurs langues est essentiel. Cette thèse présente en premier lieu un processus de traduction, d’adaptation et de validation en français et en anglais d’un outil en allemand visant l’évaluation des compétences requises lorsque le travail est organisé en mode distribué. Un premier article présente les limites fréquemment observées dans les études qui effectuent de telles adaptations. Un deuxième article met ensuite en lumière l’importance relative d’un ensemble de compétences liées à deux types de performances individuelles appropriées au travail en projet virtuel. Les résultats montrent que la créativité, l’autonomie, l’intégrité, la loyauté et la minutie sont directement liées à la performance proactive. Il est cependant nécessaire de prendre en compte l’effet positif de la perception de collaboration et l’effet négatif du degré de virtualité pour comprendre comment les compétences que constituent la motivation à apprendre, l’autonomie, l’intégrité, la loyauté et la minutie agissent sur la performance adaptative. En somme, cette thèse propose d’abord un processus rigoureux permettant l’adaptation, la traduction et la validation d’outils dans plusieurs langues. Ce processus permet d’éviter les limites auxquelles se buteraient des méthodes plus simples dans un contexte international où il est primordial d’avoir une très grande confiance en l’équivalence des instruments. Cette thèse représente également un avancement intéressant en ce qui a trait à la compréhension des différents déterminants de la performance individuelle lorsque le travail est organisé en projets virtuels. Des recommandations sont présentées afin de favoriser la performance individuelle, et des pistes de recherches futures sont également amenées pour continuer à approfondir les connaissances sur le sujet. / In a context where workplaces are becoming more internationalized, and where innovation is critical, today's organizations must structure jobs by taking into account geographical distance and the need to perform well in tasks related to different projects. However, innovative projects and access to communication tools are not sufficient conditions to ensure adequate performance. Various factors, such as skills relevant to teleworking and the degree of virtuality that separates people must be factored in to achieve good performance. Furthermore, in order to select candidates who will be able to perform well in this context, the use of appropriate and available assessment tools in several languages is essential. First, this thesis presents a process of translation, adaptation and validation in French and English of a German questionnaire used for the assessment of skills when work is organized in a distributed mode. The first article address limitations that characterize studies that perform such adaptations. A second article then highlights the relative importance of a set of competencies related to two types of individual performance suitable for projects in virtual mode. Results show that creativity, independence, integrity, loyalty and conscientiousness are directly related to proactive performance. However, it is necessary to take into account the positive effect of the perception of collaboration and the negative effect of the degree of virtuality to understand how competencies such as learning motivation, independence, integrity, loyalty and conscientiousness affect adaptive performance. In sum, this thesis first proposes a rigorous process to adapt, translate, and validate instruments in several languages. This process helps avoid common limitations simpler methods are prone to and is better adapted to an international context where it is essential to have great confidence in the equivalences of the instruments. This thesis is also an interesting advancement in regard to understanding the various determinants of individual performance when work is organized in virtual projects. Recommendations are given to foster individual performance, and suggestions for future research are also presented in order to further deepen knowledge on the subject.

Cette thèse représente également un avancement intéressant en ce qui a trait à la compréhension des différents déterminants de la performance individuelle lorsque le travail est organisé en projets virtuels. Des recommandations sont présentées afin de favoriser la performance individuelle, et des pistes de recherches futures sont également amenées pour continuer à approfondir les connaissances sur le sujet. / In a context where workplaces are becoming more internationalized, and where innovation is critical, today's organizations must structure jobs by taking into account geographical distance and the need to perform well in tasks related to different projects. However, innovative projects and access to communication tools are not sufficient conditions to ensure adequate performance. Various factors, such as skills relevant to teleworking and the degree of virtuality that separates people must be factored in to achieve good performance. Furthermore, in order to select candidates who will be able to perform well in this context, the use of appropriate and available assessment tools in several languages is essential. First, this thesis presents a process of translation, adaptation and validation in French and English of a German questionnaire used for the assessment of skills when work is organized in a distributed mode. The first article address limitations that characterize studies that perform such adaptations. A second article then highlights the relative importance of a set of competencies related to two types of individual performance suitable for projects in virtual mode. Results show that creativity, independence, integrity, loyalty and conscientiousness are directly related to proactive performance. However, it is necessary to take into account the positive effect of the perception of collaboration and the negative effect of the degree of virtuality to understand how competencies such as learning motivation, independence, integrity, loyalty and conscientiousness affect adaptive performance. In sum, this thesis first proposes a rigorous process to adapt, translate, and validate instruments in several languages. This process helps avoid common limitations simpler methods are prone to and is better adapted to an international context where it is essential to have great confidence in the equivalences of the instruments. This thesis is also an interesting advancement in regard to understanding the various determinants of individual performance when work is organized in virtual projects. Recommendations are given to foster individual performance, and suggestions for future research are also presented in order to further deepen knowledge on the subject.
