Multiple order models in predictive control

Bowyer, Robert O. January 1998 (has links)
Predictive control has attracted much attention from both industry and academia alike due to its intuitive time domain formulation and since it easily affords adaption. The time domain formulation enables the user to build in prior knowledge of the operating constraints and thus the process can be controlled more efficiently, and the adaptive mechanism provides tighter control for systems whose behaviour changes with time. This thesis presents a fusion of technologies for dealing with the more practical aspects of obtaining suitable models for predictive control, especially in the adaptive sense. An accurate model of the process to be controlled is vital to the success of a predictive control scheme, and most the of work to date has assumed that this model is of fixed order, a restriction which can lead to poor controller performance associated with under/overparameterisation of the estimated model. To overcome this restriction a strategy which estimates both the parameters and the order of a linear model of the time-varying plant online is suggested. This Multiple Model Least-Squares technique is based on the recent work of Niu and co-workers who have ingeniously extended Bierman's method of UD updating so that, with only a small change to the existing UD update code, a wealth of additional information can be obtained directly from the U and D matrices including estimates of all the lower order models and their loss functions. The algorithm is derived using Clarke's Lagrange multiplier approach leading to a neater derivation and possibly a more direct understanding of Niu's Augmented UD Identification algorithm. An efficient and robust forgetting mechanism is then developed by analysing the properties of the continuous-time differential equations corresponding to existing parameter tracking methods. The resulting Multiple Model Recursive Least-Squares estimator is also ported to the δ-domain in order to obtain models for predictive controllers that employ fast sampling. The MMRLS estimator is then used in an adaptive multiple model based predictive controller for a coupled tanks system to compare performance with the fixed model order case.

Factors which affect the levels of automation in an automotive final assembly plant

Pillay, Prabshan January 2012 (has links)
In the global automotive industry there is a drive toward integration of autonomous and human operated equipment. Monfared and Yang (2006:546) suggest that this dynamic requirement could be met with elements to be investigated in a research paper. Current investigations show a gap in management not having a guideline which can be used to help decide between automation versus human capital in the planning of new production facilities in the automotive assembly plant. (Skjerve and Skraaning, 2004:3). The purpose of this research is to determine what factors affect this decision-making process. In order to carry out this research, an in-depth literature review was conducted using various sources. The sources included, but were not limited to, interviews at assembly plants, the Nelson Mandela Metro University library, various e-journals and the internet. The literature review led to the finding of the factors which affect Levels of Automation (LOA) and to the development of the research instrument which was used to measure the impact of those factors. The results of fifty-two (52) respondents were then analysed and used as evidence to support the three hypotheses proposed. As a result of completing the above procedure the following hypotheses were supported. The greater the level of technology and the lower the skills of employees the greater the level of automation in an automotive assembly plant to be used. The greater the complexity of the assembly processes the lower the level of automation in an automotive assembly plant to be used. The higher the flexibility the greater the level of automation in an automotive assembly plant to be used. This means that managers and supervisors of assembly plants should consider the level of technology and skills of employees, flexibility and complexity during the design stages of an automotive assembly line as these factors will affect profitability by reducing waste, improve quality as well as allow for flexibility in customer demand in terms of volumes and product variance.

Oisiovici, Ronia Marques 05 July 2001 (has links)
Orientadores: Sandra Lucia da Cruz, João Alexandre F. R. Pereira / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Quimica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-07-27T15:50:28Z (GMT). Batch configurations present features which are desirable in the ca1led "future plants": flexibility of operation, rapid response to changing market demands, suitability for manufacturing high-quality and high value-added products. Batch distillation is the most frequent separation method in batch processes. Some ofthe challenges to be faced in the automation ofbatch plants are: pronounced nonHnearities, process/model mismatch, time varying process gains, presence of measurement noise, on-line sensors are unavailable or give delayed results, state estimation is difficult and computationally expensive. While the control of high-purity continuous distillation column is a subject often addressed in literature, there are very few papers regarding the control of high-purity batch distillation units. This work aimed to develop an inferential control system for high-purity batch distillation colurnns, which is able to cape with the automation difficulties common1yencountered in practice. The control algorithm was first tested by simulation and then experimental runs were carried out in a pilot-scale batch distillation column to confirm the practical appHcability ofthe designed inferential control system. An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) for batch distillation columns was developed to provide fast and reHable instantaneous composition values from few temperature measurements. The EKF was then combined with a control strategy based on the Globally Linearizing Control (GLC) structure, resulting in an inferential control system for constant distillate operation of high-purity batch distillation columns. The GLC controller was tested in a pilot-scale batch distillation column with 29 sieve trays. The separation of ethanol/l-propanol mixtures were considered in the experimental runs. The interface between the computer and the process was achieved by an AD/DA converter. Thennocouples were used to measure instantaneous temperature values at some column stages. At each sampling period, the EKF provides instantaneous composition values from the temperature data the computer acquires. In order to keep the product quality at the set-point, the GLC controller updates the reflux ratio using the composition estimates, and the computer controls the position ofthe reflux magnetic valve to implement the calculated reflux ratio. The number of sensors and the model integration interval showed to be important variables in the design ofthe EKF. Faster convergence and more accurate estimates were obtained by increasing the number of sensors and/or reducing the integration intervalo However, above a certain number of sensors the improvement in the EKF performance may not be significant. Spiky reflux ratio profiles were observed when sensors were placed next to the top stages, where the temperature variations are small. As the sensors were placed further from the top stages, smoother manipulated and controlled variable profiles were obtained and the distillate product met the specified purity. The inferential control system achieved tight composition control. The selection of the sensors locations must be a trade-off between obtaining noise reduction and guaranteeing that the EKF will provide acceptable estimate accuracy. Due to its robustness with regards to plant model mismatch, uncertainty in the initial system state and measurement errors, the proposed inferential control scheme is flexible and demonstrated to be feasible for practical on-line applications / Doutorado / Sistemas de Processos Quimicos e Informatica / Doutor em Engenharia Química

Decision mechanism, knowledge representation, and software architecture for an intelligent control system

Malaviya, Anoop Kumar January 1998 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] This thesis analyses the problem of Intelligent Control for large industrial plants and suggests a hierarchical, distributed, object-oriented architecture for Intelligent Control. The architecture is called MLIAC (Multi Level Intelligent Adaptive Control) Architecture. The MLIAC architecture is inspired by biological control systems (which are flexible, and are capable of adapting to unstructured environments with ease) and the success of the distributed architecture SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) Systems. The MLIAC Architecture structures the decision and control mechanism for the real-time properties namely safety, liveliness, and timeliness . . . In addition, three case studies have been reported. The case studies cover the control of a Flexible Manufacturing System and the Mine Products Quality Control. The results show that MLIAC Knowledge Representation model meets the requirements of the Roth-Hayes benchmark regarding Knowledge Representation. The decisions taken are logically tractable. The software architecture is effective and easily implemented. The actual performance has been found to depend upon a number of factors discussed in this thesis. For the specification and design of Potline MLIAC software, a CASE package ("Software Through Pictures") has been used. The Potline MLIAC software has been developed using C⁄C++, SQL, 4 GL and RDBMS based on a Client-Server model. For computer simulation the Potline MLIAC software has been integrated with the MATLAB⁄SIMULINK package.

Authenticator and Transmitter System (SAT): technological model for automation and process control in smart cities with sample application to the tax sector.

Melo, Vidal Augusto Zapparoli Castro 13 May 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, the construction of Sistema Autenticador e Transmissor (Authenticator and Transmitter System) is proposed, being a technological model for automation and process control in smart cities, with a view to transversal application in sectors that demand, on the one hand, data generation on the field with the establishment of rules and a guarantee of authenticity and confidentiality; on the other, safe transmission to one or more control stations. As an example of application, the model is evaluated through the use of a prototype on the retail tax sector in the State of São Paulo, which still requires more effective solutions, despite the advances made thanks to the transition to automated processes. The prototype consists of a device, an embedded software and a backoffice solution, and is called, in this specific case, Sistema Autenticador e Transmissor de Cupons Fiscais Eletrônicos (SAT-CF-e) (Electronic Retail Tax Invoice Authenticator and Transmitter System). The main objective of this work is, therefore, to provide a technological model that effectively meets the needs of state tax administrators, especially in relation to operations requiring the emission, validation and transmission of retail market sales data. Based on the analysis of the current environment of Nota Fiscal Paulista and other electronic document projects introduced in Brazil, and taking into consideration the paradigm shift in the generation of tax documents, the SAT-CF-e has been developed for the use of technologies that meet business requirements, according to which the document exists only in electronic format and is valid only when stored in databases managed by tax authorities. The implementation of SAT-CF-e, a pioneering initiative of Secretaria da Fazenda do Estado de São Paulo (São Paulo State Tax Authority), is already established on a national basis, since the creation of a new tax document, the Cupom Fiscal Eletrônico SAT (CF-e-SAT) (Electronic Retail Tax Invoice), model 59, officially established by Conselho Nacional de Política Fazendária (National Council for Tax Policies) in Ajuste SINIEF 11/2010 authorizing States to use it in their operations regarding Imposto sobre Circulação de Mercadorias e Serviços - ICMS (Merchandise Circulation and Service Tax). The results of the implementation of a technological model for the automation and control of the retail sector tax process in the State of São Paulo have been positive and can testify that this solution is a unique state-of-the-art contribution with innovative qualities, since it ensures rapid integration between the tax authorities and commercial establishments, as well as rationalization and modernization of tax administration, information sharing, a reduction in costs and bureaucratic barriers, tax duties automation and a facilitation and strengthening in the control of the tax process. It is undoubtedly a solution that ushers in an era of smarter control of commercial retail operations in Brazil, with benefits for the public administration system and for the population as a whole.

Plant error compensation and jerk control for adaptive cruise control systems

Meadows, Alexander David 05 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Some problems of complex systems are internal to the system whereas other problems exist peripherally; two such problems will be explored in this thesis. First, is the issue of excessive jerk from instantaneous velocity demand changes produced by an adaptive cruise control system. Calculations will be demonstrated and an example control solution will be proposed in Chapter 3. Second, is the issue of a non-perfect plant, called an uncertain or corrupted plant. In initial control analysis, the adaptive cruise control systems are assumed to have a perfect plant; that is to say, the plant always behaves as commanded. In reality, this is seldom the case. Plant corruption may come from a variation in performance through use or misuse, or from noise or imperfections in the sensor signal data. A model for plant corruption is introduced and methods for analysis and compensation are explored in Chapter 4. To facilitate analysis, Chapter 2 discusses the concept of system identification, an order reduction tool which is employed herein. Adaptive cruise control systems are also discussed with special emphasis on the situations most likely to employ jerk limitation.
