AUTOMATISK PAN/TILT-KONTROLLER FÖR ANTENNINRIKTNING / AUTOMATIC PAN/TILT CONTROLLER FOR ANTENNA ALIGNMENT

<p>This report describes the design and construction of a prototype that automatically aims a microwave link towards a target. The link, that is located on a mobile aerial mast, is used by Saab Training Systems as a part of an infrastructure network. The report also discusses the development of a GUI that communicates with the control unit by Bluetooth.</p><p>The control unit, called Pan/Tilt-controller, controls the position of the link by stepping motors. One motor controls the azimuth angle and the other one controls the elevation angle.</p><p>By a GUI the operator enters the coordinates on its own position and the targets position. Hereafter a bearing is calculated and it will be sent up to the control unit.</p><p>The control unit will sense its own direction by a magnetic sensor that works as an electronic compass. The Pan/Tilt-controller will then rotate the link to reach the targets coordinates. Alternatively you can control the position of the link manually by the GUI.</p><p>The report also discusses the functionality of the sensors and tests have been conducted to determine the accuracy of the control unit. The Pan/Tilt-controller can rotate a link 360º around its own axis and also tilting the link ±90º. The Pan/Tilt-controller can direct a link towards a target with an accuracy of 5º -10º.</p>

<p>The idea for the thesis “Construction and implementation of a mobile prototype; The Lovebomb” originates from doctoral candidates Rebecca Hansson and Tobias Skog from PLAY Research Group at the Interactive Institute in Gothenburg. The object of the master thesis is to construct two working LoveBomb prototypes, one mother console belonging to the LoveBomb and blueprints for both. The LoveBomb (the picture to the right shows a possible design) is intended to encourage people to express themselves emotionally when situated amongst strangers in public spaces. Two buttons control the device, which contains a radio transceiver. By pushing the buttons the user can either send a happy message or a sad message. The LoveBombs in the vicinity receive the sent message and lets its user know which message that has been received by vibrating either a sad irregular pulse or a happy continuous pulse. While vibrating the LoveBomb send out a confirm message. The confirm message can only be received by a LoveBomb which has recently sent out a message. After receiving a confirm message the LoveBomb conveys this to the user by turning on a red LED (light emitting diode) and letting the LED shine for about half a minute. During this time the LoveBomb can only receive messages. If it receives a message, during these 30 seconds, the LED is turned off and the prototype starts vibrating according to the received message. Should a LoveBomb which has sent a message fail to receive a confirm message it conveys this to the user by turning on and off the LED three times. After this the prototype is ready to send another message. The picture below shows a state diagram of the LoveBomb. The mother console registers all the communication between the LoveBomb, by pushing a button the user can see how many happy respectively sad messages that has been sent. Our workstarted with the doctoral candidates communicating their thoughts and wishes concerning the prototype to us. We organized this information into a requirement specification. We started the development of the Lovebomb and the belonging mother console by selecting a suitable micro controller. We choose PIC16C84 from Microchip but changed later to its successor PIC16F84, because the latter was easier to get a hold of. The micro controller controls all the other components. When we knew how to program the micro controller, we started working with a transceiver, suggested by the doctoral candidates, DR3001 from RFM. After establishing a meaningful communication between two micro controllers connected with on transceiver each, this was the hardest and most important part, we began working with not so vital component such as diodes, vibrators and buttons. When we were finished with the implementation and construction we examined the prototype and compared it to the requirement specification. To our satisfaction the prototype did not differ a lot from the requirements and the existing differences were improvements from the original idea. During the development process both of us learned a lot about assembler programming, electrical engineering and radio communication.</p>

Processuell generering av oändliga spelvärldar : Praktiska problem och optimering

Enligt oss så är det största problemet med att processuellt generera en pseudo-oändlig spelvärld i realtid är att få genereringen att ske så sömlöst som möjligt samtidigt som världen upplevs som konsekvent. För att finna lösningar på detta problem så analyserar vi andra studier och spel som utnyttjar processuell generering. Vi använder sedan de metoder och tekniker vi funnit för skapandet av en egen applikation för att få en djupare förståelse för hur dessa fungerar i praktiken och hur mycket varje metod påverkar prestandan. I vår slutsats beskriver vi de problem vi fann, deras orsak och ger förslag på lösningar. På grund av studiens tekniska karaktär så riktar den sig främst till programmerare. Vi hoppas att med denna studie kunna komplettera andra studier inom detta, enligt oss, relativt outforskade område. / According to us, the biggest problem with procedurally generating a pseudo-infinite game world in real-time is to have it generate as seamlessly as possible and keeping the world consistent at the same time. In order to come up with solutions to this problem we analyzed other studies and games which utilize procedural generation. We then used the methods we found in order to create our own application to further understand how they work in practice and how much each method affexts the performance of said application. In our conclusion we describe the problems that arose as well as explain what caused them, as well as present possible solutions to them. Due to the technical nature of this study it is mainly aimed at programmers. We hope that this study can complement other studies within what we think is a relatively unexplored subject.

This report represents a comparison between two different tools used to create an online store that was developed by two students at the Technical University in Jönköping. The web shop will be of great benefit to both customers and administrator in a food firm known as Mattias' Livs. The company wanted an online store that facilitates the sale section and gives a full control of their stocks. The aim of this thesis is to create an online store that offers customers the ability to shop online and help the staff to operate the company in a simpler and more efficient way, which reduces the need for human resources and thus leads to less costs for the company. The aim also includes a comparison between the two different tools used to create the online store. At the start of work, the authors discussed the problem with the client and finally came up with a set of requirements, which our work is based on. The report includes an introduction chapter, which is divided into two different sections. The first section describes the background and problem description. While second chapter describes the purpose of the thesis and the subjects that the students will respond at the end of the report. The study compares the two different tools, which is Microsoft Visual Studio and osCommerce. Visual Studio has been the market leader in Internet-based applications since 1997. While osCommerce is a newer tool that has gained significant market share. The two tools are examined through the creation of two websites built into each tool. The results of this study show that Microsoft Visual Studio is a more efficient alternative for creating a stable web applications, but the tool has also some usability problems due to programming complexity. OsCommerce is a simple tool that has some issues with the design customization, at the same time it has a usable interface for the administrator. The web shop was published online by installing the application on a host server which means the customers can order products online.

Evaluation of the Configurable Architecture REPLICA with Emulated Shared Memory / Utvärdering av den konfigurerbara arkitekturen REPLICA med emulerat delat minne

REPLICA is a family of novel scalable chip multiprocessors with configurable emulated shared memory architecture, whose computation model is based on the PRAM (Parallel Random Access Machine) model. The purpose of this thesis is to, by benchmarking different types of computation problems on REPLICA, similar parallel architectures (SB-PRAM and XMT) and more diverse ones (Xeon X5660 and Tesla M2050), evaluate how REPLICA is positioned among other existing architectures, both in performance and programming effort. But it should also examine if REPLICA is more suited for any special kinds of computational problems. By using some of the well known Berkeley dwarfs, and input from unbiased sources, such as The University of Florida Sparse Matrix Collection and Rodinia benchmark suite, we have made sure that the benchmarks measure relevant computation problems. We show that today’s parallel architectures have some performance issues for applications with irregular memory access patterns, which the REPLICA architecture can solve. For example, REPLICA only need to be clocked with a few MHz to match both Xeon X5660 and Tesla M2050 for the irregular memory access benchmark breadth first search. By comparing the efficiency of REPLICA to a CPU (Xeon X5660), we show that it is easier to program REPLICA efficiently than today’s multiprocessors. / REPLICA är en grupp av konfigurerbara multiprocessorer som med hjälp utav ett emulerat delat minne realiserar PRAM modellen. Syftet med denna avhandling är att genom benchmarking av olika beräkningsproblem på REPLICA, liknande (SB-PRAM och XMT) och mindre lika (Xeon X5660 och Tesla M2050) parallella arkitekturer, utvärdera hur REPLICA står sig mot andra befintliga arkitekturer. Både prestandamässigt och hur enkel arkitekturen är att programmera effektiv, men även försöka ta reda på om REPLICA är speciellt lämpad för några särskilda typer av beräkningsproblem. Genom att använda välkända Berkeley dwarfs applikationer och opartisk indata från bland annat The University of Florida Sparse Matrix Collection och Rodinia benchmark suite, säkerställer vi att det är relevanta beräkningsproblem som utförs och mäts. Vi visar att dagens parallella arkitekturer har problem med prestandan för applikationer med oregelbundna minnesaccessmönster, vilken REPLICA arkitekturen kan vara en lösning på. Till exempel, så behöver REPLICA endast vara klockad med några få MHz för att matcha både Xeon X5660 och Tesla M2050 för algoritmen breadth first search, vilken lider av just oregelbunden minnesåtkomst. Genom att jämföra effektiviteten för REPLICA gentemot en CPU (Xeon X5660), visar vi att det är lättare att programmera REPLICA effektivt än dagens multiprocessorer.
