Desta forma, os projetos têm se constituído em importantes instrumentos para mudanças e desenvolvimento de propostas de valor que asseguram a rotina adequada ao sucesso futuro dos negócios das empresas. Assim o estudo de fatores críticos de sucessos torna-se fundamental devido a que, se gerenciados de maneira eficaz, tanto mitigam os possíveis atrasos quanto potencializam as competências que possibilitam o sucesso dos projetos. Nesse contexto, este trabalho tem o objetivo de propor um procedimento para avaliar a percepção das pessoas que trabalham nos projetos quanto aos fatores críticos de sucesso. Tal procedimento mostra que é relevante tratar os fatores críticos de sucesso do ponto de vista da percepção das pessoas que trabalham nos projetos, pois os resultados dependem das pessoas que aderem, se mobilizam e percebem o que deve ser feito para o sucesso dos projetos / Abstract: The project management knowledge is one the most important driver regarding the organizations searching for excellence. As a conclusion, the enterprise management project is one right way to change management and to establish value proposals that consider the enterprise proper routine to the business future success. To study the project critical success factors become a must to everyone interested in mitigate projects delays and to improve workforce skills that will assure success. In this context, this thesis has an important challenge. It proposes a formal procedure to evaluate the enterprise workforce perception regarding the projects critical success factors. This formal procedure shows the relevant details that has to be considered from the committed workforce perception viewpoint. An Integrated Model for Auditing Construction Projects - a Case Study of Oil and Gas Projects in Iran

Nowadays, organizations implement projects for many purposes. Using the project as a strategic success factor for project-oriented companies is continuously increasing. However, most of the time, the results are not the same as planned. Some projects fail to achieve their objectives; others are canceled, whereas on some other cases, companies have to re-plan their strategy. Project-oriented companies know that maintaining an ideal and logical balance between the project’s time, cost, and quality constraints can vastly guaranty project success. Therefore, they should switch from traditional project management to modern and advanced project management methodology, which improves project performance and efficiency over its life cycle. One of the most applicable tools used to assess and monitor project performance and thus finding the associated issues is Project Audit, which is a comprehensive and organized assessment of the effectiveness and efficiency of project performance, management, and compliance. In this research, an integrated project audit model is presented that incorporates a detailed design module, which shows the structure of the model, questionnaire module, and a scoring module. The model is developed as an integrated project audit application where the user is easily able to select, plan, implement, and report a project audit. The model’s output consists of two parts: 1) a comprehensive report that shows the project situation in five main project processes and nine project functions. This report presents the project’s score in a specific function and its related process (i.e., planning cost or closing procurement); 2) useful analytical reports and graphs of the project performance. In this part, the model compares the project’s planned and actual time and cost, calculates their variances, and forecasts the final cost and time based on the current performance. The model is validated by using an actual Oil and Gas project to test its workability and capabilities. Three groups will benefit from this model; 1) owners; 2) project managers and project team; 3) general contractors and construction companies. The model helps project owners to identify problems early on and reduce project waste in terms of time, effort, material and costs. Moreover, it provides owners the opportunity to identify the project performance from the cost and time constraints. Also, after using this model, project managers and project team have a list of findings that need to be addressed to enhance the overall project performance. The various reports of the model not only provide detail information about project constraints (time, cost, and quality) but it also present valuable analysis related to other aspect of the project (i.e. risk, scope, and communication) which are very useful for the project team. Furthermore, the developed lessons learned from the project can be documented with this model, which is very useful for general contractors and construction companies in future projects.

Influence of Individual Perceptions on Engineering Team Performance within Design Build Infrastructure Projects

The successful delivery of large complex infrastructure projects continues to challenge the civil engineering profession, with a predominance of projects delivered late and over budget. Many researchers have investigated methods and means of improving the less-than-satisfactory record of the execution of these projects. One recent research direction suggests that improvements in project delivery may not be realized until the project setting is understood from the as-lived perspective of the participants. Following this direction, the research described in this dissertation explores the personal and interpersonal dynamics operating within projects, treating them as complex social processes. The social dimensions explored in this study involve team leaders and staff engineers in a matriced organization handling a large urban design-build infrastructure project. The interactions among the participants within and across units and levels had both positive and negative impacts. The data for this exploratory case study comes from semi-structured interviews and online surveys collected at three points over eleven months when the project was in the design phase. Interviews were conducted with a limited number of individuals; the survey was collected from the larger engineering organization. From the interview data, issues which impacted project delivery were identified as the relationship with supervision, the availability of information, an understanding of the larger project context, and the response to project constraints. The survey data was used primarily to understand the social dimensions affecting two engineering disciplines, one that performed well and one that performed poorly. Issues that aligned with the performance differences included frequency of contact with supervision, the ability to make decisions, and effective use of time available to complete design tasks. Data from the two modes of investigation demonstrated strong triangulation. Recommendations for both academia and industry are provided. / Ph. D.

An Assessment Of Alignment Between Project Complexity And Project Management Style

The main drivers for this research are the complexities associated with the project management and an organization's project management style in dealing with these complexities. This research aims to demonstrate that alignment between project complexity and project management style increases project performance and decreases project issues, and also, with increased project issues, project performance deteriorates. In order to test these claims, this research developed measures for assessing project complexity, project management styles and project issues by employing a survey of project management professionals. The measure for project complexity is based on a taxonomy with four categories: organizational complexity, product complexity, methods (process) complexity and goal complexity. Project management style is defined as the management paradigm that guides the managers of an organization in perceiving and dealing with management problems. The measure for project nagement style is based on the plan-do-study-act (PDSA) cycle and the Newtonian and complexity paradigms. Also the measures for project issues are developed after an extensive content analysis on the literature on project issues, risks and success factors. A self-administered survey instrument (paper-based and on-line) with 40 questions (seven point Likert scale) was utilized. The respondents were the project management professionals from different industries in the Central Florida region. Each respondent was asked to answer questions for two different kinds of projects: a successful project and a challenged project. Based on the data collected by the survey instrument, the results of confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses provide strong evidence that the final measures for project technology complexity, project management styles, project issues and project performance have adequate validity and reliability. Results of the hypothesis tests demonstrate that increased alignment of project complexity and project management style leads to increased project performance and decreased project issues, and also increased project issues leads to project decreased performance. From the perspective of project management, the results of this study have illustrated the importance of aligning a project's complexity and management style. These results suggest that project or program managers can improve the performance of their projects by any attempt to increase the alignment between project complexity and project management style. Project management professionals and theoreticians can use the methodologies provided in this dissertation to assess project complexity, project management style and alignment.

An exten-sive literature survey was conducted to determine the constitution of an adequate knowledge base for would-be project managers. A detailed literature study was conducted. The literature review discussed how to assess project management competencies. Technical skills and social cultural skills were identified from the literature review. A comprehensive list of criteria was used to generate the critical success factors.Based on the critical success factors that were obtained from the literature in the content for the knowledge base was constructed. This research then started to address what constitutes certification requirements. Certification programs were identified globally for the study. This study identified what the certification programs offered. This research started by proposing a knowledge base and using the “grounded theory approach” used content analysis to compare the proposed knowledge base with project management certification programs. The study concluded with recommendations on the gaps that exist in project man-agement certification programs.

A literature review was conducted and it was found that the causes of delays are extensively researched in the construction industry with only limited reference to delays in the mining industry which are mainly risk based. The effects of delays are predominantly listed as timing and cost effects.

The study will be qualitative in nature and will use a case study methodology investigating the social processes experienced by the project managers of the various subsystems of Bombardier Transportation, as part of the Bombela Concession Company, in the delivery of the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link project. Project Managers were interviewed to understand how they experience the social processes taking place in the project environment as well as how they handle and approach these social interactions. The above methodology used in this exploratory case study is specifically used to develop a justification for enlarging the existing methodological Project Management Bodies of Knowledge (PMBOK) and the Life Cycle processes applicable to System Engineering to include Social processes.
