The psychological experiences of grieving for adolescents recently bereaved of a parent

Garzouzie, Gabrielle 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Parental bereavement has generated interest internationally, and yet very few bereavement studies have been conducted within South Africa, even though the prevalence of South African adolescents experiencing parental bereavement is on the increase. The attachment theory explains why the loss of a parental figure during adolescence could have a long lasting negative influence on adolescents’ psychological development. The present study aimed to explore the psychological experience of bereavement for 66 adolescents who recently lost either a parent or a significant caregiver who played a parental role for the bereaved adolescent. By means of a cross-sectional quantitative design the following variables were examined: depression (using the Beck Depression Inventory–Second Edition; BDI-II), anxiety (using the Beck Anxiety Inventory; BAI), coping (using the Coping Strategy Indicator; CSI), attachment (using the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment; IPPA) and social support (using the Social Support Appraisal; SSA). The results showed that the strongest significant positive correlations were between depression and anxiety, followed by positive correlations between attachment to the remaining mother figure and problem-solving coping. Furthermore, the results showed that the strongest significant negative correlations were between: depression and problem-solving coping, followed by the correlation between attachment to the remaining mother figure and peers and depression. Support from significant attachment figures in the bereaved adolescent's life was found to promote healthy adjustment to the significant loss by lowering depression and strengthening perceived social support for the bereaved adolescent. For the South African population, peer run support group interventions, based in schools or community youth groups, have been identified as best suited to promote resilience for adolescents during the bereavement process. The interventions would bring together bereaved adolescents, creating a support group for the adolescent to draw on during their bereavement.

The aim of this work is to examine the Immigrant subjectivity, particularly driven by the prospect of transnationalism which fundamentally seeks to focus the effects of the practices of transnational immigrants produce to the transmigrant subjectivity. Transnationalism is not a new phenomenon, however, gains visibility through the facilities offered by technology, followed by other important transformations in industrial and post-industrial society. In this sense it is a new field of research, which deals with a variety of activities and communities that spans national borders. Transmigrants are therefore people who practically live two lives: speak two languages, have homes in both countries and build their daily lives through regular transnational contacts. These activities cover a wide range of actions (economic, political and socio-cultural). The methodology of this work is supported in critical ethnography, and postcolonial epistemologies. Fieldwork consisted of an immersion in the daily life of the Angolan community in Brasil, São Paulo, in order to closely monitor the experiences of the same, enter the coexistence and establish relationships with the other members, participating in various activities carried out by immigrants. We conducted some interviews to support the observations we made, that give us complementary elements to of daily life. The main conclusions are summarized in the following ideas: the phenomenon of immigration and the experience of transnationality are currently favored by the new possibilities of communication afforded by contemporary technologies; transmigration raise the emergence of new dynamics in the immigrants subjective process that can help us to be better understood in the field of psychology the phenomenon in the area of affectivity and beyond. Finally we claim the creation of a new category for analysis of the nature of transnational phenomenon in the light of psychology, that we call transnational psychosocial field.

The empty-nest stage of life : a comparative study of women and men facing transition

Kaplan, Ernest January 1989 (has links)
This thesis encompasses a study of the empty-nest stage of life. For the purposes of this study, the above-mentioned stage was defined as that period in the family when the youngest child matriculates. Thirty-five empty-nest couples were interviewed during 1984, in the city of Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The mean age of the subjects was 49.5, and the standard deviation was 4.9. The couples were asked about their attitudes towards the empty-nest, using a structured questionnaire, the Family Attitude Survey (FAS). This survey consisted of nine-point attitude statements, which focused on theoretical issues pertinent to this stage, viz. children are on-time or off-time with regard to major life events, impact of children leaving home on the parents, degree of parental involvement with children, parent-child relationships, ageing, sexuality, menopause, work-career, and attitudes towards the past, future and death. The general purpose of the present study was to determine the extent to which the empty-nest stage of life constitutes a negative crisis period, or a positive period of stability and growth for the empty-nest parents. Overall, it was concluded that the empirical evidence depicting the empty- nest stage of life as a positive period of stability and growth rather than a negative crisis period, is persuasive for some of the empty-nest parents in the present study, in view of the empirical findings regarding certain of the above-mentioned theoretical issues examined in the present thesis. Notwithstanding this, it was deemed essential to qualify the above conclusion, given the fact that the same and other respondents experienced difficulty with the following issues, viz. children being off-time with regard to major life events, the departure of children from the home, overinvolvement with children, problematic relationships with them, perceptions of themselves as failures as parents, inability to accept their own ageing, problems with changing sexuality, diminishing enjoyment in their occupations, and lack of prospects for future career advancement, negative preoccupation with the past and future, anxiety about death, and an impoverished marital relationship. It was also demonstrated empirically that wives experience particular psychological problems at this time, viz., firstly, they are more adversely affected by their children's departure from the home than their husbands, secondly, they undergo a rehearsal for widowhood more frequently than them, and thirdly, a minority of them are unable to come to terms with the menopause. Finally, the finding that the majority of wives experienced relief with the onset of the menopause when viewed from the perspectives of general emotional impact, children, and the spousal relationship, conflicts with existing theories in this area. However, it is supported by and large by the majority of empirical studies.

The quality of the built environment involves spatial characteristics that affect the perception and the behaviour of its users. Factors such as ventilation, temperature, lighting, shape and volume must be worked out in order to provide appropriate environments that promote a good quality of life. Because environmental perception is derived from the processing of sensory stimulus, the premise of this doctorate thesis is that the biological rhythm and the psychological state of users are directly influenced by spatial variables. Thus, the hypothesis of the research is that the hospital environment, controlled exclusively by artificial lighting and climate control, and associated to the intense pace of work, alter the biological rhythm of resident physicians increasing the occurrence of psychological diseases and increasing the chances of them making diagnostic errors. The goal is to identify how the hospital environment under artificial conditions, especially lighting and temperature, affect the quality of life and the perception of medical residents through the analysis of physiological and psychological variables. Therefore, the evaluated environmental variables were; i. quantitative gauging of the temperature, lighting, relative humidity, air velocity and physical aspects; ii. qualitative questionnaires regarding visual perception, thermal, acoustic and use of space. Psycho-physiological aspects of resident physicians were evaluated according to; i. emotional variables with validated instruments in Brazil for the demarcation of anxiety, depression, stress and psychiatric disorder in the workplace, in addition to sleep and its quality; ii. hormonal variables by saliva collection and the use of ELISA test for cortisol and melatonin dosage. The research is characterized as exploratory and prospective due to the observed outcome variables and follows the design of experimental research. The study was conducted in real conditions in the Radiology Department of the Hospital at UNICAMP/Campinas. Among the results found with resident doctors were different psycho-physiological responses according to the environmental conditions; also that these same conditions did not reach values able to fully interfere in the psycho-physiological health of physicians whatever the year of residency. This research contributes to the advance of the state of the art, adding information to the data already collected on the influence of artificial environmental conditions on the perception and psycho-physiological health of a proportion of the hospital population, contributing to the development of the quality of the environment through architectural design / Doutorado / Arquitetura, Tecnologia e Cidade / Doutora em Arquitetura, Tecnologia e Cidade

Emotional labour amongst women leaders within the consulting industry: a hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry

Pillay, Reevasha 02 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore how women leaders within the consulting industry experience emotional labour in South Africa. I followed a qualitative research approach informed by the hermeneutic phenomenological paradigm, making use of a case study approach and in-depth semi-structured interviews with eight women leaders with a minimum of eight years’ experience within the consulting industry, all of whom resided in the Gauteng region. The questions posed to participants aimed to understand the various emotions experienced during pre-set scenarios. The empirical findings suggest that women leaders naturally adopt a transformational leadership style. The empirical research exposes that women leaders within the consulting industry do not have any form of work-life balance. Furthermore, the empirical research reveals that most of the women experience both negative and positive emotions due to the ups and downs exposed to at work, there is no organisational support to overcome these emotions / Colleges of Economic and Management Sciences / M.Com. Multifaktoriální etiologie syndromu zmrzlého ramene a možné intervence z pohledu fyzioterapie / Multifactorial etiology of frozen shoulder syndrome and intervention possibilities of physical therapy

Pilátová, Markéta January 2020 (has links)
Theoretical part of the thesis is a scientific research of latest articles about frozen shoulder syndrome with accent to immunohistochemical level. At the same time, based on scientific literature it aims to clarify and statistically prove multifactorial causes of this syndrome especially in women going through hormonal changes. Psychosocial factors are also taken into account in this study and examined by unique questionnaire that was made expressly for this thesis. The questionnaire originates from internationally accepted clinimetrics such as VAS, SPADI, DASH score and most importantly SF-36. The theoretical research part also consists of "Therapy" chapter which describes latest trending treatment method for this condition. Experimental part, which consists of few case reports, focuses on a group of female patients who underwent range of motion measurement including functional testing of the affected limb. Next step followed was consecutive twelve minutes exercise on bicycle. They were controlled not to cross over anaerobic threshold. Level of exercise was controlled by predicted heart rate and estimation of the threshold by basic calculation and also by subjective Borg's scale of effort determined by the patient. After the bicycle exercise the range of motion was measured again and compared to the...
