Group Action in Locational Conflict

McNaught, Janet E. 04 1900 (has links)

Existing approaches to the analysis of participation in community groups have adopted either a social-psychological view or a structural-political view of the impetus for participation. This paper attempts to integrate these two approaches, through analysis of the nature of the link between the impact of the issue, which serves as a source of conflict (a psychological view) and the organizational characteristics of the community group (a structural view). Using Dahrendorf's model of latent and manifest interests, research propositions are generated, focusing on four sets of factors conditioning the selection of group participation as a response to conflict. These are: psychological factors, technical conditions of organization, social conditions of organization, and political conditions of organization.

Results of an empirical application of these propositions, using a questionnaire, show that the impetus for participation in a community group is a two stage process, depending on the existence of two separate sets of conditions: the impact of the issues, which is dependent upon the individual's distance from the source of conflict; and the social organization of the group. Based on analysis and interpretation of these results, hypotheses are generated, and are used to modify and expand Dahrendorf's model, in order to make it more applicable to the analysis of community group participation in locational conflict.
/ Thesis / Bachelor of Arts (BA)

The psychological, social and cultural experiences of undergraduate international students at the University of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus) : an afrocentric perspective

Hlokwe, Joy Katlego January 2019 (has links)
Thesis (M. A. (Psychology)) --University of Limpopo / This research investigated the psychological, social and cultural experiences of undergraduate international students at the University of Limpopo (Turfloop Campus). The study was qualitative in nature with an exploratory research design. The research made use of purposive sampling. Data was collected through focus groups as it was an appropriate tool for collecting the in-depth experiences of international students registered at the University. There were four focus groups with six participants in each so the overall sample was twenty-four. The researcher sampled twelve females and twelve males to ensure gender representivity. Afrocentricity was used as theoretical framework underpinning the study. The data were analysed using Thematic content analysis (TCA). The following themes emerged out of an interpretation of data: Motivation; Discrimination; academic challenges; language barriers; sense of belonging; homesickness; avoidance, acculturation and shared African culture. International students experienced many challenges which resulted in loneliness and isolation. They also used negative defence mechanisms in order to cope in the new environment. Results indicated that there are divisions in terms of culture (both social and academic) in the University environment caused, in part, by the colonial partition of Africa. Conversely, elements of African culture that have survived the onslaught of colonialism (and in South Africa, apartheid) help bind international and peer host country students (and outside communities) together.

We aim with this study to highlight the gender representations in Psychology that appear in different historical periods and to understand how these manifestations are related historically to the consolidation of Psychology. For this, we use history as an instrument and resource for analysis, as well as theoretical-methodological references of feminist studies and studies from Critical Social Psychology. The paper was structured as follows: In the first chapter, we present some historical narratives of the oppression of women in the West, followed by the discussion of the constitution of the feminist movements; in the second chapter, we present a historical panorama of modern science and especially of Psychology, trying to understand how such productions thought about gender issues. Subsequently, we investigated the representations of gender in Psychology to contemporary perspectives; in the third chapter, we discussed the history of Social Psychology, reflecting on possibilities and impasses in articulations with feminist and gender issues.

The Search for Social Capital Transference in Associations: The Case of the Verrado Assembly

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: This mixed-method study of a community association discusses the potential for a comeback in associationalism. This comeback is posited to first occur within associations before it can occur across associations. This study discusses research on associations and critiques its failure to not go far enough to understand how to spur this comeback. In particular, this study suggests that future research needs to focus more on the psychological components of social capital and pay more attention to the more informal forms of association behavior. The findings of this community case study provide a preliminary model of psychological social capital development and transference. The findings suggest that Herzberg's (1959) factors, attitudes, and effects complex still holds merit after considering psychological social capital effects, specifically cognitions and behaviors. Evidence from looking at associational and community involvement is presented that suggests that psychological social capital can be transferred between associations and their respective communities. A framework for intentionally stimulating psychological social capital transference is presented based on an association's leadership program. Thus, psychological social capital transference as a theory is presented for consideration in future research and application. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Community Resources and Development 2014
