Profiel van 'n traumaontlonter

Increasing violence in the work environment created a need for an effective intervention to debrief traumatised workers. The aim of this study is to compile a profile of an effective trauma debriefer that can be used as a criterion for the selection of trauma debriefers. The task description of the trauma debriefer is based on the literature studied. The profile of the trauma debriefer was compiled using the characteristics of a self-actualised person, as described by the Humanism, as well as the skills based on Ivey's Microskills Hierarchy Model. Structured, non-directive interviews were conducted with five experts on the training of trauma debriefers. A qualitative analysis was made of the interviews, based on the personality characteristics and skills identified in the literature. A profile of an effective trauma debriefer that can be used as criterion during the selection of trauma debriefers, was compiled. Conclusions and recommendations were made and limitations were identified. / Toenemende geweld in die werksomgewing het gelei tot 'n behoefte aan 'n koste- effektiewe intervensie vir die ontlonting van getraumatiseerde vverkers. Die doei van die navorsing is die samestelling van 'n profiel van 'n effektiewe traumaontlonter, ten einde die profiel as kriterium vir die keuring van traumaontlonters te gebruik. Die taakbeskrywing van 'n traumaontlonter, gebaseer op relevante literatuur, is opgestel. Die profiel van 'n effektiewe traumaontlonter is aan die hand van die persoonlikheidskenmerke van die selfaktualiserende persoon, soos vervat in die Humanism©, en die vaardighede, gebaseer op Ivey se Mikrovaardighede Hierargiese Model, saamgestel. The career development experiences of Black African female psychologists in South Africa : a narrative approach.

This study investigated Black African female psychologists’ lived experiences of career development. The purpose was to describe the influences of the community on the career development of Black female psychologists. It also aimed to explore the challenges and successes of these women’s career lives in order to generate knowledge to understand Black female psychologists’ career development dynamics. This qualitative study was informed by narrative/hermeneutic approaches and Black feminist thought frameworks. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 Black African female psychologists. Results show that Black African female psychologists faced numerous challenges such as lack of family and community support in some cases; limited understanding of psychology in their communities and health sectors, as well as financial problems and discourses of inferiority throughout their professional training. The lack of relevance of their academic training to the multicultural society, in which they have to practise, was emphasised. The intersection of gender, race and class was evident in most of the narratives. The role of emotion and spirituality in the career development of some of the participants was highlighted. Exploring stories of registered counsellors about their relevance and future in South Africa

The category of Registered Counsellors was created to provide psychological service at primary level to previously disadvantaged communities, yet there is lack of public and professional knowledge concerning this category. This study aimed at finding reasons why people choose to become registered counsellors and what their relevance and future is in South Africa. Social constructionism is the epistemological framework for this qualitative investigation. Three registered counsellors aged between 27 and 31 were chosen for this study using a combination of purposive and snowball sample technique. Rich data were collected through open ended interviews. This approach was chosen as the most relevant because it helped in giving a voice to the three ‘registered counsellors’ which in turn helped in getting a holistic understanding of the participants’ point of view. Thematic analysis technique was used to identify key themes. The main themes identified in comparative analysis were the following: the need to help, feeling of fulfillment, working in a multidisciplinary team, registered counsellors as first point of entry, experiencing barriers in terms of lack of recognition, confusion between registered counsellors and other healthcare professionals; and the role of HPCSA. The results showed that the participants became registered counsellors because of the need to help others. The results also showed that registered counsellors are relevant in South Africa because their services are needed for the well-being of society. There is a future for registered counsellors in South Africa to close the gap in terms of mental health workforce shortage. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

A documental study was done by analysing the Projeto Pedag?gico de Curso (PPC) from five universities. Also, interviews were conducted, for each program, with a coordinator and a professor who teaches subjects related to social policies. The main results indicates that the Psychology undergraduate programs in Piau? are recent, created between the late 1990s and early 2000s, when professionals in this area were in demand. The social policies appear in PPC related to student profile; curricula emphasis, subjects and internships; albeit in a peripheral condition. Furthermore, disconnection between proposed profile and the curriculum; fragmentation and insufficient content about social policies; and predominance of clinical area were perceived in these institutions. It is noteworthy that health policies stand out in PPC while social assistance policy or other social policies were poorly mentioned. Therefore, the place of social policies must be reviewed in Psychology undergraduate programs from Piau? in order to include other social policies and improve the subjects articulation, assuming a central, critical and policy perspective / O crescimento do n?mero de psic?logos inseridos nas pol?ticas sociais e a recente implanta??o das Diretrizes Curriculares estimulam o debate sobre a forma??o voltada para esse campo. Assim, a presente pesquisa teve como objetivo investigar a presen?a das pol?ticas sociais na forma??o graduada do psic?logo no Piau?. Para tanto, realizou-se uma pesquisa documental atrav?s dos Projetos Pedag?gicos do Curso (PPC) em cinco cursos de gradua??o de Psicologia no Piau?. Tamb?m foram realizadas entrevistas, em cada curso, com um coordenador e um docente que ministra disciplinas relacionadas ?s pol?ticas sociais. Entre os dados constatados, destaca-se que os cursos de Psicologia do Piau? se caracterizam pela sua recenticidade, sendo criados entre o final dos anos 1990 e o in?cio dos anos 2000, com a justificativa de necessidade e demanda de profissional nessa ?rea. Evidenciou-se a presen?a das pol?ticas sociais nos PPC desde o perfil do egresso, nas ?nfases, disciplinas e est?gios, embora de maneira ainda perif?rica. A study of the livid world of the patient with borderline personality disorder in New Zealand

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a major health problem and is associated with considerable psychosocial distress and impairment, resulting in a high degree of morbidity and a significant impact on the mental health system. Patients with BPD are difficult to treat clinically, the main issue being engaging the patient and then maintaining the relationship. Patients with BPD constitute 10-20% of psychiatric inpatients, utilise a large amount of mental health resources and have a 10% successful suicide rate. Therefore, it is essential that attention is given to improving effectiveness of treatment approaches for patients with BPD, including engagement. The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the lived world of patients with BPD in order to develop supporting guidelines to improve non-compliance of patients with BPD. The objective of the study was to develop guidelines to improve compliance, which is expected to minimise self-harm risks and improve the quality of the patients’ lives. A qualitative, phenomenological methodology was chosen because it is particularly well suited to study human experiences of health (LoBiondo-Wood & Haber, 2011:141). It is a design that emphasizes discovery through interpreting meaning as opposed to quantification and prediction. Understanding and interpretation of data was thus the hallmark of the research design. This phenomenological study examined human experiences through the descriptions provided by the people involved, i.e. lived experiences. Data collection was done using recorded interviews guided by a semi-structured interview schedule. Memos collected during interviews supplemented the data. Data analysis was hallmarked by constant comparison, contextualisation and description of emerging themes. The main findings, described in three main themes, were the importance of the relationship with the clinician, the overwhelming feelings experienced by the patients and the sense of futility in treatment. These were all linked to the lack of hope the patient felt regarding their clinician, ever being able to manage their continuously oscillating emotions and the purpose of treatment. The findings led to the construction of guidelines to foster initial and continued engagement in treatment with patients with BPD.
