The influence of social networking on the social interaction patterns among adolescents in the northern suburbs of Cape TownSymington, Serahni 11 1900 (has links)
The aim of the qualitative study was to explore the phenomenon of social networking and the possible influences it could have on adolescents‟ way of interacting socially. The study was conducted from a gestalt perspective and also incorporated aspects of developmental theory. Learners (12-18 years old) from a high school in the northern suburbs of Cape Town participated in semi-structured interviews voluntarily. Parents and teachers also participated in the study by forming part of focus groups. The study indicated that although social networking is a beneficial social tool for adolescents, it could become an obstacle during social interaction which is not mediated through an electronic or mobile network. From the study it can be concluded that social networking is a positive social tool, which could become dangerous for adolescents‟ social interaction abilities when used inappropriately. / Social Work / M. Orphans from child care institutions and from extended families attend the same schools as non-orphans. They are often given the same psycho-social support yet it is clear that they have different psycho-social needs. Their backgrounds are usually different from those of other adolescent learners because, often, they would have observed or nursed sick parents who eventually died from AIDS-related illnesses. This qualitative study aimed at investigating the psycho-social needs of orphaned adolescent learners in child care institutions and those in extended families in the context of HIV and AIDS. The study further sought to find out how the psycho-social needs affected the HIV- and AIDS-affected orphans’ school performance and social behaviour. In-depth interviews were conducted with four orphaned learners from child care institutions and four from extended families using open-ended questions. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Findings of the study were that the psycho-social needs of AIDS-affected orphans in families were met by relatives more than those of AIDS-affected orphans in child care institutions. The results of the study also revealed that there was not much difference in school performance between HIV- and AIDS-affected orphans from extended families and those from child care institutions. Thus this study contributes to Sociological and Behavioural literature in the area of HIV and AIDS as well as the education literature of the vulnerable groups like orphans. Divorce has become so prevalent in our present day society, that it is regarded as one of the most sressful and complex mental health crises facing children today. As parents are often under tremendous stress during the time of divorce, they may be incapable of provding the support and guidance children need.
The purpose of this study is to present a group counselling intervention
programme to assist children of divorce and to create a supportive group
atmosphere in which children can share divorce-related feelings, clarify
common misconceptions and reduce feelings of isolation. Findings of
this study indicate that the acquisition of problem-solving communication
and anger control skills help to reduce feelings of depression and
anxiety, improve the self-concept and ultimately promote post-divorce

The mobile phone as an extention of the self : a study among adolescents in a secondary schoolDavel, Coriena 02 1900 (has links)
The mobile phone forms part of a teenager’s life world and reality today and can be regarded as a tool with which they not only communicate, but also use them to gain access to the Internet, social media and social networking sites. The primary aim of this study was to determine if the mobile phone, with all its functionalities, has an impact on the development of the adolescent’s identity formation, social development and communication skills as well as the sense of the self. Another objective of this study was to determine what the opinions and perceptions are of older generations with regard to mobile practices of the youth. A concurrent triangulation mixed method design was utilised for the purpose of the study. The quantitative and qualitative studies were conducted simultaneously and the data and results from each method were integrated and interpreted as a whole. The quantitative data gathering method was short self-structured questionnaires that were completed by learners (190), teachers (35) and parents (21) to provide a general overview of mobile usage among adolescents. A single-group pre-test post-test experimental design and individual interviews were conducted with eight volunteers. Lastly, 12 learners took part in a focus group interview as a confirmation technique for all the information that was gathered. The findings of the empirical investigation revealed that the mobile phone is used nowadays as a social tool, a planning tool and a convenience tool. The constant connectedness the mobile phone provides, strengthens the adolescents’ self-esteem and self-confidence and contributes strongly to their self-worth. The mobile phone is used as a self-expressive personalised tool and forms part of the sense of the adolescent self. It was also found that adolescents build their relationships with others on a two-dimensional platform that involves online and offline communication and activities. A definite gap exists between older generations’ perceptions and adolescents in connection with the ways that adolescents use their mobile phones nowadays. Parents and teachers have to accept the fact that technology forms part of today’s youth and they should change their mind-sets with regard to this complicated and complex phenomenon. / Psychology of Education / D. Thirty percent of divorcees enter into wedlock again within one year from being
divorced, thereby creating a reconstructed family.
The child in the late middle childhood years experiences some unique challenges during
the reconstruction of the family due to influences such as the parent-child relationship,
parenting styles and the start of puberty.
The purpose of this qualitative study is to determine the child's psychological experience
within the reconstructed family and to provide guidelines to parents (and co-therapists)
on how to deal with children during the reconstruction process.
The qualitative method of research was applied as it is a more informal research
procedure and the boundaries of the study subject are reasonably wide and undefined.
The method provides an adaptable strategy regarding problem formulation and data
collection, which allow semi-structured interviews, observations and field notes, and

Teenage pregnancies are currently a social problem in South Africa and in the
rest of the world. Social workers are involved with teenage girls by providing
guidance during their pregnancies and face many challenges by accepting this
role. The objective of this qualitative study was to identify and describe the
needs of social workers when guiding pregnant teenage girls. A conceptual
framework with the Gestalt approach as the theoretical framework for the study
was stated after which an empirical study took place. In-depth interviews took
place with nine social workers. Results were then verified in a focus group
discussion. From the empirical data themes and sub themes were identified and
verified with relevant literature. These themes and sub themes were then
interpreted through the Gestalt approach. Conclusions and recommendations
were made to social workers and interdisciplinary teams, which form part of the

"Dancing with change": evaluating an ecosystemic substance abuse intervention programme for youthAshdown, Deborah Anne 31 March 2006 (has links)
The "Dancing with Change" Programme (DWCP) is an ecosystemically informed substance abuse
intervention programme that was developed by the participants and myself with the aim of building
resilience towards substance abuse among youth. The DWCP was conducted in the school setting, with ten volunteer Grade 7 learners over a ten-week period for an hour a week. The learners' parents participated in an initial needs assessment and in a feedback session at the end of DWCP, together with the life skills
teacher and headmaster who observed and contributed to the process. An independent observer, present at each session, served to increase the dependability and confirmability of the evaluation findings. The DWCP appeared to have achieved its goals as defined by the participants. The evaluation findings are presented as a guide for people working in the field of adolescent substance abuse that synthesises best practice and lessons
