The Effects of Environmental Values and Political Ideology on Public Support for Renewable Energy Policy in Ottawa, Canada

Fobissie Blese, Elsie 03 August 2018 (has links)
Abstract / Resumé The Ontario provincial government faces the challenge of getting public support in the implementation of its RE policy. This thesis aims at investigating the effects of environmental values and political ideology on public support for renewable energy policy in Ottawa, Canada. Data was collected through open-ended interviews with fifty respondents in and around Ottawa, transcribed, coded and analysed using the NVivo software. Results indicate that environmental values and political ideology affect public support for renewable energy policy, but economic factors also play a role. The provincial government can think of ways to reduce the cost of electricity, invest on education and the creation of awareness on the benefits of renewable energy and the different initiatives that are offered by the RE policy to increase public support. Public ownership of RE projects and more democratic policy-making could also increase public support.

PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR PRODUCT INNOVATING R&D IN A GAME-THEORETIC SETTING

Buryi, Pavlo 01 May 2015 (has links)
This dissertation investigates the role of public support for R&D in product innovation. In particular, I consider the role of matching grant programs and develop a theoretical model to analyze optimal private and public choices in a game-theoretic framework. This research develops-theoretical models to examine welfare implications of various policies that promote R&D. The first chapter of my dissertation develops a theoretical model of product innovation where R&D effort is endogenous and its outcome uncertain. The government attempts to aid such efforts with a matching grant. I consider different scenarios depending on whether two parties act simultaneously, act sequentially, or take part in a dynamic cooperative game with a trigger strategy. I also consider the case when the products are exported and when they are not. I analyze situations when government intervention increases the chances of product innovation and when it does not. The second chapter introduces foreign competition in a goods market, and analyzes the effects of foreign competition on domestic private and public incentives to product innovate. Government uses matching grant programs to aid private attempts to develop new goods. The government also tries to protect the domestic firm by imposing import tariff. Two policies are then considered simultaneously to investigate the effect of trade liberalization on product innovation. The third chapter considers technological partnerships between private and public sectors as R&D promoting policy. I assume increasing returns in R&D, and study whether government should support product innovation by helping with fixed costs or variable costs associated with product R&D.

Politická komunikace v průběhu pandemie Covid 19 v Indii: Případová studie / Political Communication during COVID-19 in India: Study of Public Support.

Harshvardhan, Harshvardhan January 2021 (has links)
The research explored the public support towards the political communication carried out during COVID-19 in India. Through the means of a structured questionnaire based on Easton's dimensions of public support, responses were collected from 200 respondents, 100 each from the academic background of journalism and psychology. To determine the support towards the government performance during the crisis times based on the political communication done by the current regime in India. The results suggested that the public support is quite less from the respondents of journalism background. However, the psychology respondents showed relatively high support towards the political communication done by the Indian government in the COVID-19. It suggests that the public support is not one but scattered and also the academic background could play a major role in one's understanding of the political communication and lending of the support. The research demonstrated how respondents from different backgrounds show almost the opposite support towards political communication in the times of crisis. This gives out a good comparison and also concludes the public support. Keywords: COVID-19, pandemic, political communication, crisis communication, public support, India.

Det medborgerliga stödet för EU; en fråga om europeisk identitet? -En kvantitativ studie

Elfsberg, Johannes, Niklasson, Carl January 2020 (has links)
We have studied if there is a link between identity and support for integration within the European Union. We have used three hypotheses in order to investigate the issue. First if there is a positive relationship between european identity and european integration, secondly if individuals who experience less of a threat of the national cultural identity and state by the European Union is more supportive of european integration than those who experience a threat, and thirdly if socioeconomic factors such as years of education and household income is linked with self-experienced european identity and support for european integration. We have used statical data from European Social Survey 2018 round 9 as well as previous research for the hypothesisOur conclusion is that socioeconomic factors have a low impact on identity and perception of threat, that there is a strong link between european identity and support for european integration and that perceived threat on national cultural identity and state has a negative impact on views on european integration.

Governmental Crisis Response – To be On Top of the Frame : The Case of Norway 22/7 2011 - Crisis communication and news management

Söderlund, Malin January 2013 (has links)
This paper examines the mechanisms of “successful” communication in matters of political leaders’ability to gain public trust and credibility during large scale crises. Even though political actors andother stakeholders tend to be very proactive to promote their views, news media also play an activeand important role in framing public policy issues and crises.1 Thus, this thesis involves both politicalactors and media in the context of framing and crisis communication. Their interrelation and itsimportance for explaining successful crisis communication is demonstrated by producing a case studyof the Norwegian government’s communication efforts during and after the terrorist attack in Osloand the island of Utöya 22/7 2011. This paper argues and demonstrates that the active use ofpositive frames, that are cultural congruent and resonate with the media shaping, is a necessity tocreate a favorable context for winning praise and support in times of crisis. In line with previousresearch, framing strategies in crisis communication is demonstrated to be central to the crisisresponse and determines whether a responsible stakeholder is able to create momentum, maintainand even gain increased public support or not.

The decline in italian public support for the euro: The role of economic factors

De Matteis, Giulia, Social Sciences & International Studies, Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, UNSW January 2009 (has links)
The thesis documents the changes in Italian public opinion towards the Euro. Its aim is to assess the relevance of economic factors for the decline in Italian support for the common currency. The thesis begins by assessing the extent to which support for the Euro has declined in Italy. While there has been popular, media and political comment on this issue, the thesis investigates the changes in attitude through the use of survey material and concludes that there is compelling evidence that public support for the Euro has declined in Italy. The thesis adopts a utilitarian/rational choice approach in order to investigate the reasoning behind the Italian public's developing relationship with the single currency from 1998 to the present. Its central question is: How have economic factors impacted on the Italian public's support for the Euro? The analysis focuses on Italians' perceptions - not their actual knowledge - of national and individual level economic changes brought about by the single currency. The thesis investigates how such perceptions have impacted Italian popular support for the Euro over the period 1998-2007. The method employed in this thesis is primarily based around analysing quantitative data gathered from Standard and Flash Eurobarometers. Other sources considered are academic literature and newspaper articles. The analysis clearly suggests that Italians' optimism towards their national and personal economic situations have all decreased since the Euro was introduced, concurrently with their diminishing support for the Euro. This work suggests that the main reason for decreased support lies in Italian perceptions that the Euro has contributed to worsening economic situations at both the national and individual levels. In particular, Italians believe the Euro has spurred inflation and diminished their purchasing power, and accuse it of failing to promote economic growth and jobs. However, Eurobarometer data combined with newspaper articles indicate that it is the perceived economic consequences at the individual level - loss of purchasing power due to Euro-related price increases, and pessimism towards their household financial situation - that more strongly determine Italians' decreasing support for the Euro.

Verslo investicijų galimybės ir valstybės rėmimas / Business investment opportunities and public support

Pielikytė, Rima 05 August 2013 (has links)
[toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The development and competitiveness of a company depends on the range and levels of its investment activities. The economic growth of a country is largely dependent on the opportunities for the investment attraction for the economic development of the country. Therefore, in this process particular attention is given to the state investment policy, which consists of a complex of legal, economic and administrative measures. Vilnius generates not only more than 30 per cent of the country's total gross domestic product, but also about 60 per cent of all foreign investments into the country comes through Vilnius. For this reason, it can be said that the Vilnius city municipality significantly contributes to the state's competitiveness through the implementation of investment projects. This work brings up this hypothesis: in Lithuania there is a less favorable environment for business investment, public investment priorities for business promotion does not fully meet the expectations of business and the more of the investment support measures state offers, the more opportunities for business investment are coming up. The aim of the work, which is based on modern theories of investment and the investment policy of the country, is to expose the sources and factors for the development of business investment opportunities, to present a study of the state support for investments as well as its policies and practices in this field, and to analyze the opportunities and role of the... Hodnocení dopadů veřejných podpor na rozvoj podniků v ČR / The Impact of Public Support on Development of Enterprises in the Czech Republic

Loun, Jakub January 2011 (has links)
Diploma thesis The Impact of Public Subsidies on Development of Enterprises in the Czech Republic examines the real impact on profit, revenues and debts. Counterfactual impact evaluation method is used on companies subsidised from structural funds. These indicators were examined by difference-in-difference method based on the selective research of 1738 companies subsidised from OP Entrepreneurship and Innovation and control group of the same size. The impact of public support on the profit of subsidised companies was quantified as 608 -- 5 547 ths. CZK and the impact on sales as 14 713 -- 42 511 ths. CZK. 1 CZK used for subsidies increased the profit of supported companies by 0.05 -- 0.44 CZK and sales by 1.16 -- 3.35 CZK. Hypothesis that the growth of supported firms increased their debt has not been proved. Also a slight positive effect of support on growth in return on equity was identified.
