What is in a book? : A critical discourse analysis of the e-book debate between 2012 and 2016

The main objective with this Master’s thesis is to, through a critical discourse analysis, explore the overall discourses on e-books appearing in general Swedish media. The texts chosen for analysis consist of articles and debate entries published in four of Sweden’s largest newspapers during a five-year period. The texts were examined using Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional conception of discourse, which means that language use as communicative events were analyzed on the three levels of text, discourse practice, and social practice. The results from the analysis show that three dominating discourses can be identified in the material; the comparison discourse, the financial discourse, and the availability discourse. Within the comparison discourse, the e-book is in many ways positioned in comparison to the paper book. This occurs in several contexts, for instance in the contexts of pricing, access, and e-lending. A recurrent issue within the financial discourse is conveyed as the concern that e-book lending will become too big of a threat towards e-book sales or that e-lending will become too expensive for libraries. Within the availability discourse, the e-book is constructed in connection to democracy and free access to e-books is viewed as a condition for libraries as democratic institutions. The different discourses use different strategies to legitimize their point of views, and accordingly, achieve or maintain a hegemonic status. To achieve hegemony in this situation means gaining power over the presentation of the discussion about e-books, that is the power over the order of discourse.

M.A. (Information Science) / Since the earliest civilizations books have found their way into libraries, thus the printing and publishing industries in the era after Gutenberg invented printing with moveable type, are of cardinal importance to library science. Within the field of library science the systematic bibliographic description of the products of the printing and publishing industries features strongly. Books and other publications are a basic necessity in any civilized community. It therefore stands to reason that after the constitutional establishment of the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek (ZAR) a printing and publishing industry would develop and thrive. A complete survey of the printing and publishing industry in the Transvaal has not yet been published. This study endeavours to fill this gap by bringing together information on all types of publications printed in Dutch, Afrikaans, English and other languages in the Transvaal during the period 1857-1902. This is done in the form of a bibliography and a description of the printing and publishing industry in the ZAR. A literature study was done using bibliographies and catalogues in the Brenthurst Library, Johannesburg Public Library and the Rand Afrikaans University Library. It was established from the literature what was printed and published from 1857-1902 in the Transvaal. A bibliography of these items was compiled and information on the printers and publishers was collected. Transnational Scottish book marketing to a diasporic audience, 1995-2015

The thesis examines transnational Scottish book marketing to a diasporic audience from 1995 to 2015. The study addresses the research question: what makes marketing of Scottish-interest books from Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the publishing industry successful transnationally? The data underlying the research comes from semi-structured interviews with members of publishing organisations in Scotland and members of Scottish heritage organisations worldwide, case studies of the marketing histories of economically successful books targeting the diaspora, and narrative rhetorical criticism of the online book blurbs of Scottish-interest books by Scottish publishers. The qualitative results demonstrate that the marketing of Scottish-interest books from SMEs in the publishing industry is successful transnationally when creative relationship marketing through storytelling is emphasised; icons, symbols and narratives from Scotland’s place brand are utilised; and communication of value is targeted to specific subcultures of consumption (like the Scottish diaspora) that transcend national boundaries. Adopting the definition of marketing as the communication of value of a product or service, the study analyses the influencers, characteristics, and participants of that communication. The research impacts those individuals and organisations, particularly Scottish publishing companies, who are involved in the twenty-first century Scottish book trade. The thesis recommends that to reach the diaspora audience, Scottish publishers need to make a more united effort under Publishing Scotland to approach and partner with Scottish heritage organisations; create working relationships with Global Scot (and Scottish Enterprise more generally), Scottish Development International, Visit Scotland, and Event Scotland; and become more involved in tourism events relating to the Scottish diaspora.

The aim of this thesis is to analyze the basic elements that affect the image of the Society for the Protection of the Rights of Music Authors and Publishers (in Czech OSA). Based on a study of professional literature it identifies the basic segments of corporate identity, which represent the starting point for building the organization's image and which is further analyzed in detail. Although OSA is not a typical company operating in a market environment (mainly due to its monopolistic position in the Czech Republic), it has something to do with creating a positive organization's image and the so called "goodwill" as well as it have typical profit organizations. The purpose of this analysis is not only to identify the key elements that affect the image of OSA, but also to outline activities that should be followed when creating a positive image. The document works with both recommendations in general terms, so the suggestions in specific areas.

Выпускная квалификационная работа написана с цельюразработать программу курсов повышения квалификации для редакторов и издателей для дальнейшего внедрения этой программы на кафедре издательского дела УрФУ. Перед тем как написать программу, были изучены нормативные акты, необходимые для разработки подобной программы. Также, чтобы понимать, что уже имеется на сегодняшний день на рынке курсов повышения квалификации, были проанализированы программы вузов и коммерческих организаций, выявлены их сильные и слабые стороны. Во второй главе был проведен социологический опрос с целью выявления критериев оценки качества курсов. Опрос потенциальной целевой аудитории показал, какие темы наиболее интересны слушателям, какой формат обучения для них самый удобный и какую цену они готовы отдать за подобные курсы повышения квалификации. После анализа всех ответов и полученной информации была составлена пилотная программа курсов повышения квалификации для редакторов и издателей, состоящая из 17 тем теоритической и практической направленности. / The aim of this final qualification work is to develop a program of refresher course for editors and publishers for it further implementation at the Department of Publishing of UrFU. Before writing this program, the specification documents were studied. Also, in order to understand what is already available on the market ofrefresher courses, the programs of universities and commercial organizations were analyzed, their strengths and weaknesses were identified. In the second chapter of the work a sociological survey was conducted in order to identify criteria for assessing the quality of courses. A survey of potential target audience showed which topics are the most interesting for the listeners, which training format is the most convenient for them, and what price they are willing to pay for such refresher courses. After analyzing all the responses and the information received, a pilot program of refresher courses for editors and publishers, consisting of 17 theoretical and practical topics,was drawn up.
