Formation et transformations d'une élite coloniale : Puebla (1560-1639) / Formation and transformations of colonial elite : Puebla (1560-1639)

Senmartin, Émilie 17 July 2017 (has links)
The goal of this contribution is to study the construction and the evolution of the elite through the structure of the "cabildo" of Puebla de Los Angeles in New Spain. This city was founded by spaniars settlers in 1531. The elite that was stablished during the very first years is essentially composed by spaniards conquerors. The office of "regidor" is then a royal grace received as a reward for their participation in the conquest war. Very close relationships are established between the different regidores who, quickly, form the same family clan dominated by the Díaz de Vargas and the Villanueva. But as of 1591 and the establishment of the venality process of the offices, the cards are redistributed. New members from other social and economic groups enter the cabildo: the obrajeros and the mercaderes. There follows tensions between the different groups and a recomposition of this elite no longer following military bases but economic, recomposition driven by different family strategies. The composition of this new elite, dominated by the mercaderes, did not lead to the disappearance of the old one. On the contrary, it is necessary for the new power class to acquire the lacking social status. Thus this new group has all the components of the new economic and social elite of the city of Puebla: conquistadores, obrajeros and mercaderes

José Lazo Valero's Eight Responsories for Matins of St. John the Baptist

Chavarria, Vicente 04 May 2011 (has links)
The musical archive of the Cathedral of Puebla, Mexico, contains an extensive body of work by José Lazo Valero (1713-1778) amid music not only by local chapelmasters but also by European masters, including Guerrero and Palestrina. However, our understanding of Pueblan cathedral music from the eighteenth century on is lacking in detailed research. José Lazo Valero served as chapelmaster at the Cathedral of Puebla from 1749 to 1778. In the archive at Puebla we find his eight Responsories for Matins on the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist, various psalms, hymns, and Masses. The present work focuses on the eight Responsories for Matins of St. John the Baptist. Through an historical contextualization and musical analysis, I trace Lazo Valero’s stylistic development through the Responsories, which were written over the course of twenty years. I discuss how the Italian style that dominated music in Spain in the eighteenth century found its way into Pueblan musical practice, and how its incorporation into composition mirrored a change in liturgical thought during the same period. The Responsories show a move from the older, Spanish polychoral style to the newer, simpler gallant style of the early Classical period. Thus, Lazo Valero’s music represents an important piece of the mosaic of colonial music, for it distinguishes him as a transitional figure between the Mexican Baroque and Classical periods.

Jeunesse, activisme culturel et espace urbain à Puebla, Mexique

Castillo, Eduardo. 16 April 2018 (has links)

Spinelli, Brendan William January 2019 (has links)
In relation to other Hispanic populations in Philadelphia (e.g. Puerto Rican, Dominican, etc.), the Mexican community reflects a more recent wave of immigration in the city that began in the early 90s. Since its initial establishment, the community has continued to grow and to integrate into the greater Philadelphian society. In comparison to other areas of the United States that have received immigrant groups predominantly from northern Mexico, Philadelphia has been the destination for a significant proportion of immigrants from the state of Puebla. Although those from Puebla represent a substantial portion of the Mexican immigrant population, the city has become home to other groups of Mexican origin, two of which will form part of this study: those from the capital, Mexico City, and those from the east coast, Veracruz. Diverging from common sociolinguistic practices, this dissertation focuses solely on the speech of male immigrants due to a significant larger population of Mexican men who have migrated to Philadelphia. Utilizing social factors such as length of residence in Philadelphia, age, level of education, and region of origin, this study examines the phonological behavior in the speech of 30 male speakers from Mexico City, Puebla and Veracruz. Specifically, the phonological features included are the /s/, /n/, and /r/ in final word position, as well as /e/ and /o/ in final syllables. Using Rbrul, this study analyzes correlations between the above social factors, specific linguistic factors, and variation in the above variables including their maintained and reduced forms. The results from the multivariate analysis not only shed light on the linguistic behavior of each group, but also allow comparisons between the linguistic practices of speakers from each region. Having identified the general tendencies of consonant maintenance in the central regions of Mexico, and their reduction in the coast, as well as vocalic weakening in the center, and maintenance in the coast, this study confirms the continuation of these patterns in Mexican speech after residence in Philadelphia for multiple years. Recognizing the prestige associated with the Mexico City variety as well as the prevalence of central Mexican speakers in Philadelphia, this study analyzes the impact of language change through contact between speakers from the coastal region (Veracruz) and those from the interior (Mexico City and Puebla). Specifically, this project utilizes results from the multivariate analysis to determine if findings reflect a shift form the coastal variety to the more standard, central varieties typically associated with linguistic prestige in Mexico. The dissertation concludes that, despite contact over time, Mexican immigrants are conserving characteristic linguistic features of their local regional varieties. These observations are revealing of how Mexican immigrants are renegotiating notions of linguistic capital and identity after having emigrated from their home country to reside elsewhere. / Spanish

O labirinto da colonização: México, território e \'destino manifesto\' / The labyrinth of colonization: Mexico, territory and Manifest destiny

Barros, Mateus de Sá Barreto 14 March 2017 (has links)
This work constitutes an analysis focused on the actions of the State towards native / peasant peoples and Mexican society as a whole, due to the redefinition of the colonization process in the south-southeast of Mexico, a region with a greater concentration of native / peasant peoples. The year of 2014 was, for the Mexicans, of great changes, by the advent of the reforms in the constitution undertaken by the government of Enrique Peña Nieto, the \"Structural Reforms\". By 2016, the Mexican president had already effected eleven reforms. What attracted the most attention was the fact that the Mexican population, in general, researchers and students, more specifically, are surprised by the insistence on Physical Integration, since they believe that this project had been interrupted by the great number of protests and the Crisis of 2008/2010. The media, once interested, did not mention anything about it, but the process of integration continued in full swing. The documentary analysis of the Regional Physical Integration project and its current developments is the main goal of this study. The scholars used are under the aegis of Marxian historical materialism - which, after all, is, admittedly understood by Marx himself, the most important to be considered in his productions - what differentiates decolonialism from that realized by the European thinkers is to put Latin America in the Center of the map, elucidating how the continent was forged, geographically and philosophically and how the concepts elaborated here served to expand the imperialist relations of capitalism, especially the concept of race. Thus, it was tried to show how the concepts (space and time) were appropriated by Europe for the constitution of the Latin American continent, from this to think the continent in the conformation of the world-capitalist system, or rather, the reproduction of relations Imperialists. The current inter-American relations have been explained from history, since contrary to what one imagines is a long time, it refers to the nineteenth century. In addition, Mexico\'s positioning was evident from the shift from Europe to the United States in the postwar period until accession to the North Free Trade Agreement. Finally, he focused on the analysis of the Regional Physical Integration project, primarily the participation of Mexico, its leadership in relation to the Plan Puebla Panama, the consequences for society. The intention is to situate the Plan, so a historical survey was made, besides analyzing the Mexico Chapter, Base Document and addressing the indigenous and peasant organization, the struggles against the Plan and the close connection between international relations and the internal dynamics of Mexican society.
