Strategiskt eller inte? : En kvalitativ studie om förekomsten av strategiskt inköp i svenska fast fashion-företag / Strategic or Not? : A qualitative study on the use of strategic purchasing withinSwedish fast fashion companies

Edin, Felicia, Jansson, Amanda, Lundqvist, Lina January 2018 (has links)
Today’s fashion apparel industry is characterized by a volatile demand and fast trends. These toughened conditions have resulted in fashion companies constantly being put on their edge in order to follow the market changes. The ability to make quick decisions and adapt to the market is there fore crucial in order to stay competitive. This has led to extensive changes not only in production and logistics but also within purchasing operations, which in turn serve a more important role than ever. Purchasing and Supply management is nowadays an established termin the industry not only due to its financial effect but also its increasingly strategic role within the company. According to previous research, integrating a strategic approach towards the purchasing function might lead to competitive advantage. However, a shortage of research about strategic purchasing specifically in fast fashion companies has been identified. The purpose of this study was to examine the purchasing function’s current strategic role in Swedish fast fashion companies. The study uses a qualitative research approach and the result is based upon empirical data collected through interviews. These interviews have been conducted with five representatives of three Swedish fast fashion companies that have an extensive knowledge and understanding about the purchasing function. By analysing the empirical results in relation to secondary data obtained from previous research, it was found that the purchasing function in Swedish fast fashion companies holds an important role, both financially and strategically. This strategic importance is derived from the company wide impact of purchasers’ decision-making along with the need for communication between the purchasing function and other significant departments. Furthermore, the results indicate that strategic purchasing does in fact appear in Swedish fast fashion companies, although not to a full extent. This is partially due the fact that the concept of strategic purchasing, as the literature defines it, is not established within these three companies. At last it is concluded that the previously increased relevance of strategic purchasing combined with the cultivating globalisation indicates that the purchasing functions’ strategic role will continue to grow. The thesis is written in Swedish.

Government Procurement and Financial Reporting Quality

Unknown Date (has links)
Government spending is essential for the US economy, and the amount of capital that flows from the government to US firms has increased substantially in recent years. Despite the economic importance of the corporate-government contracting relationship, we know little about the firm-level financial outcomes associated with government contracts. In this study, I investigate whether the corporate government contracting relationship affects firm-level financial reporting quality. Using a sample of 58,988 US publicly-traded firms from 2001 through 2017, I find that federal government contracting firms are associated with a lower level of discretionary accruals, lower probability of internal control material weaknesses, and lower probability of restatement and fraud as compared to non government contractors. However, this association is weaker when industry competition on government contracts are lower, and government switching costs in which the cost to find new suppliers are higher. Collectively, my empirical results suggest that having the government as a customer has a positive impact on the quality of financial reports. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2020. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Environmental friendly supply chains : How the purchasing department and its forwarders can contribute to more environmental friendly supply chains

Gustafsson, Saga, Johansson, Madeleine January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this research study was to explore how the purchasing department and aforwarding company together can promote more environmental friendly supply chains. To achieve this, the three following research questions had to be answered; RQ1: How couldbetter purchasing planning contribute to more environmental friendly supply chains? RQ2:How can the relationship between the purchasing department and its forwarding companycontribute to more environmental friendly supply chains?, RQ3: How can changes intransportation modes contribute to more environmental friendly supply chains? To be able to answer these questions, a single case study was conducted at two companies which already has an established business relationship. To ensure a rich data collection a mixed method was used, where interviews provided qualitative primary data, and quantitative data collection was conducted at both companies. The data was extracted and reduced, to ensure only the relevant information was considered in the research. All data was summarized in accordance with descriptive statistics to make it more comprehensive in the report. The interviews were performed as semi-structured interviews, which where voice recorded and then transcribed to ensure a fair analysis. A summarized version of the transcript is presented in the report. The research indicated that the choice of transportation mode is crucial to ensure more environmental friendly supply chains. When considering what transportation mode to use, itis not enough to merely consider the theoretical carbon dioxide emissions associated with the mode. One also have to take the length of the route and weight of the cargo into accountwhen evaluating which transportation mode is the most environmental friendly option for each shipment. The findings also showed the importance of purchasing planning, to make sure that available containers are fully utilized and reduce the number of transportations by merging differentshipments together. Purchasing planning will also make it possible to reduce the number of air shipments, which emits large amount of carbon dioxide and is mainly used as atransportation mode when there is a high level of urgency. In addition, the research made it clear that sustainable business relationships also cancontribute to more environmental friendly supply chains. By creating long lasting relationships with one or a few forwarders, it is possible to facilitate the achievement of the sustainability objectives. To be able to create sustainable business relationships, theindividual organizations has to achieve a high level of integration between their ownfunctions.
