A model to increase the value of ISO9001 documented procedures : A case study

Ortigoza Monroy, Ricardo, Ramirez Knape, Jorge Einnar January 2007 (has links)
The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has been facilitating the coordination of industrial standards since 1947 (ISO, 2007), and for many years ISO 9001 has been the most popular standard in the area of quality improvement and management. However many companies face difficulties when implementing it and/or passing the time, a difference between the procedures and the actual processes, which could bring major consequences. The main purpose of this study is to extend the theory of the process of documentation by analyzing the nature of this gap and its causes, create a model to reduce this problem and justify it by studying our problem consequences. The research itself follows the model designed. It starts with document research and on-site observations that revealed several improve opportunities for our case company (Alstom Power Sweden). The results show how important the employee involvement and the management encouragement are for the beneficial use of ISO9001. It also demonstrates that the real value of the documented procedures is the findings during the “making of” and its revisions. Nevertheless, besides analyzing the particular opportunities and giving suggestions for solution, we modeled the vicious cycle that in the general case, organizations might deal with and gave recommendations to break it.

ISO 9001:2015 implementation at a manufacturing company

Jönsson, Anna, Berglund, Magnus January 2016 (has links)
Martin Ivarsson, manager and part owner at Landeryd’s Mechanical Workshop (LMW), Landeryd, Sweden, initiated this project. This because of a new released ISO 9001 version that LMW has to implement before the 15th of September 2018 to remain certified. Since LMW is ISO 9001:2008 certified the project members only needed to identify the differences among the 2015 and 2008 version to see what LMW has to do to get certified. There are approximately 1.1 million ISO 9001 certificates issued worldwide. An ISO 9001 certification increase organizations ability to satisfy customer needs and customers can rely on that the products and services provided are of consistently good quality. ISO 9001 can also work as a tool to streamline the organization’s processes and make them more efficient. Since the ISO 9001 is reviewed every five year it helps organizations to keep current in an ever- changing world. Landeryd’s Mechanical Workshop has been ISO 9001 certified since 2002 and the “ISO- think” is deeply rooted within the company. LMW is a small owner-controlled company with only 18 employees. ISO 9001:2015 is applicable on different kinds of organizations in various scales. Comparing to previous versions of ISO 9001 the new version is more adaptable. This makes it more beneficial for the organizations but harder for the auditors that certifies. One major conclusion is that LMW will have more freedom of document handling with the new ISO version. This report highlights LMW’s status today in accordance to the new ISO 9001 version, and estimates how much effort that is needed for a successful revision. Readers of this report will benefit from the results, since much is applicable on all types of organizations or companies.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Diego dos Santos Pereira.pdf: 13715091 bytes, checksum: c581c352c61d60dafad4a6bee2ef3048 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-01-30 / Fundo Mackenzie de Pesquisa / This research aimed to verify how the performance measurement system (PMS) and the quality management system (QMS) work in small and medium-sized Brazilian enterprises in the light of the typology proposed by Garengo (2009). The study was conducted by means of two questionnaires, two semi-structured interviews and the analysis of the performance measures used by five small/medium-sized enterprises based in the State of São Paulo. Using a qualitative approach, this exploratory research were interviewed PMS s and QMS s managers, and the data from the first interview were analyzed using the technique of content analysis and has been subsequently triangulated with other data collected. It was found that four out of five companies have a junction in PMS and QMS, with respect to performance measures, despite of the degree of the quality management maturity is not related to the stage of the PMS evolution. It was also found that in three out of five companies quality management area is responsible for coordinating the process of PMS use, without effective participation from the controlling and/or accounting areas in this process. The typology of Garengo (2009), used to check the stage of the PMS evolution, was validated and can be used in practice by professionals in organizations to diagnose and improve the PMS in their enterprises. From the findings of this research, companies with QMS certified by ISO, particularly with higher degree of quality management maturity, can be encouraged to implement or improve the PMS in their organizations. The results of this study should be considered in the light of its limitations, especially the impossibility of its generalization to the overall universe of SMEs, to the extent that there was used the qualitative approach, without the aim of extrapolating the results for other enterprises. In this sense, quantitative research should be carried out in order to verify these results in a more representative set of SMEs. Finally, it is suggested that research could be carried out to study in more depth the PMS evolution in SMEs, with longitudinal case studies, for example.

Kvalitetscertifiering i mindre företag - Interna, externa eller finansiella motiv?

González, Daniel, Wessén, Casper January 2019 (has links)
Abstract Title: Quality certification in smaller companies – Internal, external or financial motives? Level: Student thesis, final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Authors: Casper Wessén and Daniel González Supervisors: Tomas Källquist and Pär Vilhelmson Date: 2019 - June Aim: The purpose of this study is to increase the understanding of the management in small companies underlying motives to quality certificate the business against ISO 9001. Method: The study is based on a social constructivist view of reality and a hermeneutic view of knowledge. Source-critical literature search has produced a theoretical frame of reference. The frame then helped decide the study's empirical data collection method. The study is conducted with an abductive research approach, which is a collaboration between theory and empirical data. The empirical data in turn, was collected through qualitative semi-structured interviews with ten smaller companies. To assure the quality of the study, four quality requirements were made visible, which all played a crucial role for the whole of the study. Result & conclusions: The study has primarily focused on answering its purpose. Based on the theoretical frame of reference, the motives from previous research were made visible. Then the underlying motives illustrated by our empirical data collection method were highlighted. They are then compared in the chapter analysis to demonstrate how empirical data collection has increased the understanding of underlying motives, which was the study's intention. Contribution of the thesis: A theoretical contribution is given partly in the form of a structuring in subcategories of the motives that were demonstrated in previous research, partly in the form of new visible subcategories based on empirical data collection. The new subcategories have helped to structure the underlying motives that were not mentioned in previous research, but our empirical evidence showed that the management had to certify its company against ISO 9001. Suggestions for further research: Research could take on this study by using the model presented in the result as a starting point to visualize whether other small companies also seem to have had these underlying motives. Additional suggestions are to study motives to continue to be certified, as costs are constantly increasing as the standard is renewed. It would also be interesting to take the time and resources spent on certifying a company against the benefit of the certification.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) implementation in library and information science (LIS) schools in South Africa

Hlongwane, Ike Khazamula 12 1900 (has links)
Owing to past injustices, the South African higher education sector is characterised by inequalities of resource allocation and of learning opportunities. Through the National Qualification Framework (NQF), recognition of prior learning (RPL) was established to address the previous inequalities in higher education and training. RPL can be used as a mechanism to offer non-traditional learners such as workers, adult learners, and community workers access to learning programmes in Library and Information Science (LIS) schools. It can also be used for up-skilling within LIS sector, to enable staff to migrate from paraprofessional to professional roles. LIS schools could possibly use this approach to offer experienced but unqualified library workers opportunities for progressive professional development and career growth. Despite it being a national policy and its obvious benefits, very little is known about RPL implementation in LIS schools in South Africa. This study was conducted to investigate the nature of RPL implementation in LIS schools in South Africa and make recommendations for effective and efficient RPL practice in these schools. The study used the questionnaire as the main data collection tool. In addition, document analysis was used to validate the collected data. The results of the study indicated that there were islands of good RPL practice in LIS schools in South Africa specifically with regard to the aspect of RPL assessment process. However, certain weaknesses were identified in other aspects of RPL implementation in LIS schools including the policy environment, training of personnel conducting RPL assessment and the quality management systems. Among other things, the study recommends that RPL quality management system (QMS) should ideally be driven by the head/chair of the school/department. Furthermore, an integrated student management system should be used to monitor the progression of RPL candidates through the formal academic system post RPL. / Information Science / D. Litt et. Phil.
