The relationship between the use of ICT for instruction and learning and the availability of ICT resources

South African schools appear to be far from attaining the strategic objectives of the White Paper 7 on e-Education of 2004. The use of ICT for instruction and learning in schools is hampered by contextual factors in South Africa. One factor hampering the use of ICT in South African schools is the availability of ICT resources. Despite a high degree of access to ICT at home, most schools do not have the relevant ICT resources that teachers can use for instruction and learning. The SITES 2006 technical coordinators dataset was used to determine the statistical significant difference of the joint frequencies of the number of years that schools have been using ICT for instruction and learning as well as the availability of ICT resources. An integrated qualitative-quantitative design was used to transform the dataset for the calculation of a two-way Chi-square. A two-way Chi-square was calculated for the joint frequencies as well as for the odds ratio to determine the effect size of the frequencies. Activity Theory was used as a “theoretical framework for the analysis and understanding of human interaction through the use of tools and artefacts” (Hashim & Jones, 2007). The extent of the use of ICT resources (tools) by teachers (subject) in instructing learners (object) determines the degree of success in education (outcome). Sammanfattning Bakgrund: Psykisk ohälsa är ett samhällsproblem både i Sverige och internationellt. Ett uttryck för psykisk ohälsa är självskadebeteende vilket kan upplevas som komplext för sjuksköterskor att hantera. En patient med självskador kommer vanligtvis först i kontakt med somatisk akutmottagning där sjuksköterskan har stor betydelse i bedömning, behandling och vård. Sjuksköterskans attityd kan leda till att patienter med självskadebeteende kan uppleva att de får ett mindre bra bemötande. Syfte: Syftet var att beskriva faktorer som påverkar sjuksköterskans attityd mot patienter med självskadebeteende i somatisk vård. Metod: Litteraturöversikt med 12 vetenskapliga artiklar med kvantitativ design. Dataanalys har gjorts med hjälp av Fribergs analys i tre steg. Resultat: Resultatet visar faktorer som påverkar sjuksköterskans attityd mot patienter med självskadebeteende. Faktorerna sammanfattas i fem kategorier: Värderingar, klinisk erfarenhet, ålder, kön och kunskap. Slutsats: För att sjuksköterskan ska kunna vårda patienter med självskadebeteende behövs kunskap om hur attityder påverkar bemötandet. Brist på kunskap och utbildning samt sjuksköterskans egna värderingar kan leda till osäkerhet, hjälplöshet och frustration i mötet med patienterna vilket kan leda till en negativ attityd. An expression of mental illness is self-harm which can be experienced as complex for nurses to deal with. A patient with self-injuries usually first meets the emergency department and the nurse, who has a big importance of assessment,treatment and care. The nurse’s attitude can lead to patients experiencing being treated negatively. Aim: The aim was to describe factors that affect the nurse’s attitudes towards patients with self-harming behavior in somatic care. Method: Literature overview of 12 scientific articles with quantitative design. Dataanalysis has been done with Friberg’s analysis in three steps. Result: The results show factors that affect the nurse’s attitude towards patients with self-harming behaviors. The factors are summarized in five categories: Values, clinical experience, age, gender and knowledge. Conclusion: In order for the nurse to be able to care for patients with self-harming behavior, knowledge of how attitudes affect the interactions with the patients is needed. Lack of knowledge and education as well as the nurse’s own values can lead to insecurity, helplessness and frustration in the meeting with patients, which can lead to a negative attitude. The impact of male circumcision on sexual function and satisfaction among circumcised men in Harare, Zimbabwe

Text in English / Many African countries including Zimbabwe have scaled up and included male circumcision in their comprehensive HIV Prevention package. However, the impact of male circumcision on male sexual function and satisfaction has remained controversial. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of male circumcision on sexual function and satisfaction in Harare, Zimbabwe. A quantitative study was carried out amongst a sample of 169 circumcised men using a questionnaire. The results showed that circumcision has a positive effect on both male sexual function and satisfaction. It was concluded that undergoing voluntary medical male circumcision have a high degree of satisfaction with the procedure and its consequences in terms of sexual function and satisfaction. It was recommended that men are educated about these findings so as to clear myths and misconceptions around circumcision. / Health Studies / M.P.H.

Comparing the BDI II and the HADS (HADS-D) as a screening tool for depression amongst HIV infected individuals attending a public health clinic

Magister Psychologiae - MPsych / This study utilised secondary data from a larger study that looked at individuals that are already infected by HIV which is entitled Implicative personal dilemmas and cognitive conflicts in health decision making in HIV positive adults and adults with AIDS. The primary aim of the larger study was to examine the cognitive construction of the individual and how they utilised their individual resources to construct who they are and how they perceived the difficulties and challenges that they face and the decisions they make regarding their health. HIV and AIDS is a debilitating disease and it affects millions worldwide. South Africa, presently, has the largest burden of this disease with those between the ages of 15 – 49 years of age being most affected. As previously mentioned the decisions that individuals make can impact on their health. Decisions to take necessary precautions such as protected sex during sexual intercourse can decrease the progression of the disease. Decisions made regarding abstinence of risky behaviour as well as being committed to taking medication could also positively impact health. People living with HIV and AIDS find it difficult to adjust to the challenges that this disease presents. Depression is often experienced due to the changes in self image and perception. Studies show that females are twice more likely to experience depression than men. There has however been no conclusive evidence showing the reason for this, however, the perception of stress based on gender could shed some light on this matter and how these perceptions can increase the likelihood of women being more vulnerable to depression. Due to the limitation of this study, it will only look at depression as it relates to HIV and AIDS. Psychological problems such as depression can hamper the adjustment process and the effect of depression is evident in that it can lower the CD 4 + cells. Not only are those living with HIV and AIDS affected by depression, but they also have a lifetime prevalence to depression. It is important to have an effective screening tool for depression so that the detection of this disease can be made and effective treatment can be implemented to enhance health. The sample consisted of 113 adult participants that have already been diagnosed with HIV and AIDS. The primary aim of this study was to compare the Beck’s Depression Inventory II (BDI II) and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale –(the Depression component) (HADS-D) as a screening tool for depression. Exploratory Factor Analysis revealed a 5 factor structure which accounted for 60.14 % of the total variance. The HADS yielded one factor accounting for 14.33% of total variance. The BDI II has proven to be more a reliable measure of depression with 0.89 according to the Cronbach’s Alpha co efficient opposed to 0.375 as per the HADS-D. The secondary aim was to establish the sociodemographic and disease profiles of the participants under study. / South Africa

The role of the principal as instructional leader in improving learner achievement in South African primary schools

The role played by the principal as instructional leader worldwide is critical due to its direct and indirect impact on learner achievement.In South African primary schools the role of the principal as instructional leader in improving learning achievement is a pressing issue since most South African primary school learners perform far below par as determined by benchmarking carried out by local and international education assessment agencies with reference to curriculum goals and literacy and numeracy milestones.This descriptive exploratory study examined the role of the principal as instructional leader in primary schools in South Africa with special reference to the Tshwane South District, Gauteng Province. The study was informed by a literature review of local and international sources related to theoretical perspectives on instructional leadership, the features of instructional leadership that impact on learner achievement and selected models of instructional leadership. An overview of contextual and school factors which shape primary school learner achievement in South Africa with reference to the rural and township communities also framed the empirical inquiry. A mixed method study was conducted according to two phases: Phase 1 comprised the quantitative component (questionnaires); Phase 2 comprised the qualitative component (interviews). Both phases were conducted in the Tshwane South District, Gauteng Province. In both phases data were gathered from primary school principals and Institute Development Support Officials (IDSOs) selected by random and purposeful sampling respectively. The questionnaire findings indicated that the principals and IDSOs had adequate qualifications and experience, and that key school policies are in place. However, the principals are less confident about policy implementation, particularly with regard to educator and learner discipline. They face many systemic problems, such as inadequate school resources and additional funds in no fee-paying schools to improve the infrastructure and reduce the learner-teacher ratios. The findings from the interviews indicated that the principals struggle to maintain participative management with the school governing bodies; are hampered by contextual factors, especially poor school infrastructure; and are challenged to meet the requirements of annual benchmarking assessments. Based on the findings of the literature study and the empirical inquiry recommendations are made to improve practice, including a call for the professional development of principals in project management and fundraising. / Educational Leadership and Management / D.
