An Exploration into Teachers' Perceptions of School Leaders' Emotional Intelligence

Caillouet, Lindsey E 20 December 2018 (has links)
Although the benefits of school leader emotional intelligence are well-known, leadership preparation programs lack training in emotional intelligence, thus calling for reform (Darling-Hammond, LaPointe, Meyerson, Orr, & Cohen, 2007; Johnson, Aiken, & Steggerada, 2005; Guerra & Pazet, 2016; Mills, 2009; Wallace, 2010). Emotional intelligence competencies, such as empathy, self-awareness and motivation, are closely aligned with components of transformational leadership theory, including idealized influence, individualized consideration, and inspirational motivation (Kumar, 2014). Highlighting these connections can provide guidance in identifying significant components of emotional intelligence. This study examined teachers’ perceptions of school leaders’ emotional intelligence in order to identify critical components of emotional intelligence. This research utilized a qualitative phenomenological approach to address the research problem, and questions. A purposeful sampling technique was used to recruit teachers employed in public school districts in Louisiana. Consistent with phenomenological designs, semi-structured individual interviews were the primary method of data collection, along with document analysis. Transformational leadership theory and emotional intelligence provided a framework to guide the construction of methodological approaches, including: participants, data collection, data analysis and limitations. Four major themes emerged as a result of this study: 1) school leader social skills, 2) leadership styles, 3) authentic leader-teacher relationships, and 4) perceived benefits of school leader emotional skills.

Arbetsterapeutisk kompetens i skolan : En kvalitativ intervjustudie om arbetsterapeuters upplevelse av deras kompetens i skolan

Gullberg, Patricia January 2019 (has links)
School is a place where children spend a lot of their time and therefore school also plays an important role in providing children equal terms in their possibilities of participating, learn and develop. Studies shows that children with disabilities often feels that they are not given the same possibilities to participate at equal terms. The aim of this study is to investigate how occupational therapist feel that their competence can be used in schools. The study is a qualitative study, using a semi-structured interview guide where six occupational therapists working in schools were asked to describe how they feel that their knowledge and their competence were used in school. The data was then analysed using qualitative content analysis where three categories was found: The competence of occupational therapist in school enhances the possibilities for participation, The competence of occupational therapist contributes to a holistic approach of the student and Team-work in school contributes to participation and an holistic approach.  The result showed that occupational therapist felt that using their competence in school enhanced the possibilities to participate at equal terms since they saw the students from a holistic and client-centered approach. Also team-work was important since it contributed to a holistic approach and enhanced participation.

Exploring Physiotherapists' Understanding of the Bobath Concept in Education and Clinical Practice

Dyks, Tracey 21 April 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore how physiotherapists working in stroke care understand their role(s) in the context of clinical practice and how this is mediated by their post-licensure educational experiences. Specifically the study focused on their experiences with the Bobath Concept, a well-developed post-licensure neurology physiotherapy program. This study was oriented within sociocultural theory as a way to understand how the experiences and interactions of physiotherapists mediate their professional practice and their sense of professional identity in a way not previously studied in physiotherapy literature. In order to honour the voices of the participants, this study drew on hermeneutic phenomenology and used a principled data analysis tool to present an understanding of the interrelationships involved in stroke care from their perspectives. Four physiotherapists participated in this study by responding in writing and orally to a clinical case and participating in an in-depth interview regarding their professional roles and experiences. The findings suggest that these physiotherapists understand the Bobath Concept as a professional stance which informs their practice and contributes to an ethos of caring, which is reflected in the ways they understand their roles in clinical practice.
