Integrable quantum field theories, in the bulk and with a boundary

In this thesis, we consider the massive field theories in 1+1 dimensions known as affine Toda quantum field theories. These have the special property that they possess an infinite number of conserved quantities, a feature which greatly simplifies their study, and makes extracting exact information about them a tractable problem. We consider these theories both in the full space (the bulk) and in the half space bounded by an impenetrable boundary at x = 0. In particular, we consider their fundamental objects: the scattering matrices in the bulk, and the reflection factors at the boundary, both of which can be found in a closed form. In Chapter 1, we provide a general introduction to the topic before going on, in Chapter 2, to consider the simplest ATFT—the sine-Gordon model—with a boundary. We begin by studying the classical limit, finding quite a clear picture of the boundary structure we can expect in the quantum case, which is introduced in Chapter 3. We obtain the bound-state structure for all integrable boundary conditions, as well as the corresponding reflection factors. This structure turns out to be much richer than had hitherto been imagined. We then consider more general ATFTs in the bulk. The sine-Gordon model is based on a(^(1))(_1), but there is an ATFT for any semi-simple Lie algebra. This underlying structure is known to show up in their S-matrices, but the path back to the parameters in the Lagrangian is still unclear. We investigate this, our main result being the discovery of a "generalised bootstrap" equation which explicitly encodes the Lie algebra into the S-matrix. This leads to a number of new S-matrix identities, as well as a generalisation of the idea that the conserved charges of the theory form an eigenvector of the Cartan matrix. Finally our results are summarised in Chapter 5, and possible directions for further study are highlighted.

Fermions in two dimensions and exactly solvable models

This Ph.D. thesis in mathematical physics concerns systems of interacting fermions with strong correlations. For these systems the physical properties can only be described in terms of the collective behavior of the fermions. Moreover, they are often characterized by a close competition between fermion localization versus delocalization, which can result in complex and exotic physical phenomena. Strongly correlated fermion systems are usually modelled by many-body Hamiltonians for which the kinetic- and interaction energy have the same order of magnitude. This makes them challenging to study as the application of conventional computational methods, like mean field- or perturbation theory, often gives unreliable results. Of particular interest are Hubbard-type models, which provide minimal descriptions of strongly correlated fermions. The research of this thesis focuses on such models defined on two-dimensional square lattices. One motivation for this is the so-called high-Tc problem of the cuprate superconductors. A main hypothesis is that there exists an underlying Fermi surface with nearly flat parts, i.e. regions where the surface is straight. It is shown that a particular continuum limit of the lattice system leads to an effective model amenable to computations. This limit is partial in that it only involves fermion degrees of freedom near the flat parts. The result is an effective quantum field theory that is analyzed using constructive bosonization methods. Gluon Phenomenology and a Linear Topos

In thinking about quantum causality one would like to approach rigorous QFT from outside the perspective of QFT, which one expects to recover only in a specific physical domain of quantum gravity. This thesis considers issues in causality using Category Theory, and their application to field theoretic observables. It appears that an abstract categorical Machian principle of duality for a ribbon graph calculus has the potential to incorporate the recent calculation of particle rest masses by Brannen, as well as the Bilson-Thompson characterisation of the particles of the Standard Model. This thesis shows how Veneziano n point functions may be recovered in such a framework, using cohomological techniques inspired by twistor theory and recent MHV techniques. This distinct approach fits into a rich framework of higher operads, leaving room for a generalisation to other physical amplitudes. The utility of operads raises the question of a categorical description for the underlying physical logic. We need to consider quantum analogues of a topos. Grothendieck's concept of a topos is a genuine extension of the notion of a space that incorporates a logic internal to itself. Conventional quantum logic has yet to be put into a form of equal utility, although its logic has been formulated in category theoretic terms. Axioms for a quantum topos are given in this thesis, in terms of braided monoidal categories. The associated logic is analysed and, in particular, elements of linear vector space logic are shown to be recovered. The usefulness of doing so for ordinary quantum computation was made apparent recently by Coecke et al. Vector spaces underly every notion of algebra, and a new perspective on it is therefore useful. The concept of state vector is also readdressed in the language of tricategories.
