The influence of professionalization on the recruitment of prospective teachers as perceived by Texas teachers of the yearHaney, Jan Ellen 29 August 2005 (has links)
This study focused on teacher professionalization as it relates to the recruitment
of teachers. Five aspects of professionalization were selected from the literature that
might influence a prospective teacher to consider a career in education: compensation,
credentialing, collaboration, professional development, and autonomy. The broad
emphasis of this research was to create awareness among educators of their roles in
promoting the profession of teaching. By collecting and analyzing the perceptions of
some of the most recognized teachers, regional and state Teachers of the Year, issues
that had not previously been studied were confronted and analyzed.
Major research findings for the study indicated:
?? Teachers perceive that increased financial benefits, improved public
perception of teachers, and positive school culture encourage prospective
teachers to consider careers in teaching.
?? A majority of the teachers surveyed reported that they frequently participate
in recruitment activities by sharing information on the intrinsic rewards of
their careers, by identifying qualities in another person that might lead to
the choice of a teaching career, and by telling that person that they would be
a good teacher.
Based on the findings of the study, researcher recommendations include:
?? Salary schedules should be addressed to include opportunities for teachers
to be promoted, yet remain in the classroom.
?? Teachers should inspire secondary students to consider careers in education
by participating in career day initiatives.
?? Teachers should invite the media into their classrooms and speak to
community groups to promote the profession.
?? Teachers should write op-ed pieces for the newspapers about their
profession.
?? Those teachers who have left the profession for family obligations may be
lured back into teaching by expanded job-sharing opportunities, part-time
positions, and district-managed day care.
?? An intense initiative should be inaugurated to encourage teachers to
eliminate negative discussions about the profession.
?? Initiatives that demonstrate public appreciation and acknowledgment of the
value of the profession should be implemented.

Future Recruiters’ Attitudes Toward Gender Dysphoric IndividualsHelmy, Nora, Tomljanovic, Maria January 2015 (has links)
Gender dysphoric individuals are a growing number in society and like other minority groups they are at risk of falling victim to discrimination. In an attempt to understand how attitudes affect discriminatory behaviour in a recruitment situation, future recruiters’ implicit and explicit attitudes toward gender dysphoric individuals were measured in relation to a résumé choice task. Implicit attitudes were measured with an Implicit Association Test and explicit attitudes with a transphobia scale. An independent sample t-test was conducted (N = 42), to measure if implicit attitudes differed between participants who chose a résumé of a gender dysphoric individual and participants that chose a résumé of a non-gender dysphoric individual. Although no significant differences in attitudes between the two groups were found, the results indicate other noteworthy differences in that a vast majority of participants had negative implicit attitudes toward gender dysphoric individuals in contrast to their positive explicit attitudes.

Young people's and employers' perceptions of equal opportunities in the world of workMalhi, Harshinder Kaur January 2008 (has links)
This study investigates how young people and employers perceive equal opportunities in the world of work. Events such as the Stephen Lawrence Inquiry (Macpherson, 1999), the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and other legislation to promote equal opportunities, for example, Employment Equality Regulations, 2003 (Phillips, 2007, p.36) have placed this issue high on the political and education agenda. This study also investigates how young people perceive the message of equal opportunities in employers’ recruitment material as employers often declare in recruitment advertising that they are an equal opportunity employer (Dickens, 2000, p.138). A qualitative approach is taken using semi-structured interviews with thirty students in the sixth form in five secondary schools and five employers (The Army, The Fire Service, Metropolitan Police Service, British Airways and Mars UK) in West London. Policy documents on equal opportunities were also collected from the selected schools and employers. All the sources of data, that is the interviews with students and employers and the documentary data were analysed using a thematic approach. This study provides an in-depth insight and a snapshot at a local level of the national picture on equal opportunities in the world of work in relation to gender and ethnicity. The findings are that the young people, employers and the documentation of employers and schools show common understandings but also differences in their perception and portrayal of equal opportunities in the world of work. This study has also found that young people do not perceive the message of equal opportunities in the recruitment material. The implications of these findings are considered for both Careers Education and Guidance in schools and employers. This study concludes that the consensus is inspiring as it shows that young people and employers have a common vision of equal opportunities in the world of work and this consensus is followed through in policy documents. However, the differences, whilst they add variation to the perception and portrayal, need to be addressed if equal opportunities in the world of work are to progress further. To address these issues a model of Embedded Mutual Partnership is recommended between schools and employers.

Corporate Storytelling : En kvalitativ studie om Corporate Storytelling som kommunikationsverktyg för förmedlandet av intern kultur till nya medarbetare i designbyråerAmanda, Petrén, Linda, Gustafson January 2015 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine how and if an organization is using the phenomenon Corporate Storytelling as a toll for communication to spread internal culture to new employees. Method: This paper is based on a qualitative approach where semi structured interviews together with computer-aided interviews are used for data collection. We applied theories from scholars and scientific research to form a theoretical framework, which we analysed together with the empirical data that been gathered. Conclusion: Through our analysis we have come to the conclusion that Corporate Storytelling is a complex concept that is not used with awareness of the organization leader when the internal communication concept is designed. According to one of the results from the essay we have been able to identify the need a formal use of Corporate Storytelling as a communication tool and that the need is increased with the amount of employees in an organisation and according how long the organization has been existing. The stories need to be true and reliable to create the right message and for the employees to be able to establish in the reality of the organization. Another conclusion that is made out of this paper is that during the recruitment process the use of Corporate Storytelling can contribute to a faster and more effective process to be implemented in the organization culture. The benefit of a shared culture increased the value of well-being and leads to a longer employment and reduces the risk to recruit the wrong person.

The effect of pharmacological inhibition of mitogen- and stress-activated protein kinase-1 (MSK1) on chemokine-induced neutrophil recruitment2014 September 1900 (has links)
Neutrophil recruitment to the site of acute inflammation is a multistep process regulated by specific signaling molecules. The signaling mechanisms that regulate neutrophil-endothelial cell interactions remain incompletely understood. p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signalling was shown to regulate different steps of neutrophil migration in response to inflammatory stimuli. The mitogen- and stress-activated protein kinase-1 (MSK1) can be activated by either extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) 1/2 or p38 MAPK. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of pharmacological suppression of MSK1 by its specific inhibitor, SB747651A, on various steps of neutrophil recruitment. In vivo studies were conducted using real-time and time-lapsed intravital video microscopy of the cremaster microcirculation to determine the dynamic leukocyte-endothelial cell interactions. Intrascrotal injection of macrophage inflammatory protein-2 (MIP-2, 0.2 μg/mouse) decreased leukocyte rolling velocity which was significantly reversed by pre-treatment with SB747651A (intrascrotal injection of 3 mg/kg). SB747651A pre-treatment enhanced MIP-2-induced increase in neutrophil adhesion and emigration. To better understand the effect of SB747651A on different steps of neutrophil recruitment, we placed a small piece of MIP-2-containing agarose gel on the exposed cremaster muscle and studied directed migration of neutrophils in the postcapillary venule and in the tissue. Superfusion of SB747651A (5 μM) on cremaster muscle subjected to MIP-2 gradient significantly increased rolling velocity and adhesion, but decreased emigration of neutrophils in comparison to superfusion of normal saline

without SB747651A. SB747651A treatment significantly affected transmigration time, detachment time, intravascular crawling and the velocity of migration, but not the directionality of migrating neutrophils in tissue. The expression of intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) in cultured endothelial cells was up-regulated by co-treatment with SB747651A and MIP-2 but not by MIP-2 alone. Flow cytometry analysis showed that co-treatment of bone marrow neutrophils with SB747651A and MIP-2 significantly decreased macrophage antigen-1 (Mac-1) but not lymphocyte function associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) expression as compared with MIP-2 treatment alone. Collectively, our findings demonstrate that pharmacological suppression of MSK1 by SB747651A affects multiple steps of MIP-2-induced neutrophil recruitment in vivo.

Mastering the Admissions Game: Understanding the Enrollment Priorities and Recruitment Strategies of Master's InstitutionsSchulz, Scott Andrew January 2006 (has links)
Although master's institutions enroll a substantial student population in the United States, a large percentage of which are minorities, relatively little has been written with regard to how master's institutions approach enrollment management. This mixed methods study examines the enrollment priorities and recruitment strategies of master's institutions to reveal how master's institutions are prioritizing their commitments to institutional quality, access, and financial stability, the types of recruitment strategies these institutions are utilizing to uphold their commitments, and the impact of these recruitment strategies, particularly upon issues of access. The study also makes use of a theoretical framework informed by academic capitalism theory, game theory, and institutional theory to explain why master's institutions may be prioritizing certain enrollment goals and adopting particular recruitment strategies. Findings from this study suggest master's institutions may be embracing market-oriented enrollment behaviors that prioritize revenue maximization, consequently reinforcing the advantages of the privileged and serving as vehicles for social reproduction.

Methods for estimation of cyclic recruitment variation in pygmy northern pikeminnow (ptychochelius oregonensis) of south central British Columbia.Hawkshaw, Michael Andrew 11 1900 (has links)
A long term study of fish populations on the Bonaparte Plateau, B.C., has revealed the possibility of 2-year cyclic recruitment variation in the pygmy pikeminnow (Ptychocheilus oregonensis). This thesis reviews possible causes of the cycle, and evaluates an inexpensive and non-destructive visual survey method to estimate juvenile population numbers over short summer periods while pikeminnow juveniles are recruiting to the lakes and dying rapidly, for use in future studies of the cyclic pattern. To provide an index of the abundance of juvenile pikeminnow, strip-transect surveys were conducted from shore. Each strip transect area was a full circumference of each of three study lakes, and extended from shore to a distance of up to 3 meters offshore. The visual surveys were shown to be accurate and repeatable when estimating the number of fish and the lengths of the fish in a shoal. The strip transects provide an index of abundance for juvenile northern pikeminnow and this index of abundance can be used to calculate daily summer and interannual mortality rates, providing estimates close to those predicted from the Lorenzen model for size-dependent mortality rates of fish in general. Stationary point surveys were also conducted to investigate juvenile pikeminnow behaviour, and these point surveys reveal a link between sunlight intensity and pikeminnow activity, and provide evidence of direct agonistic interactions between age 0 and age 1 juveniles, which could result in higher mortality rates of age 0 fish when age 1 fish are abundant. Analysis of survey data collected to date over five years from three lakes supports the possibility of a recruitment cycle with lakes out of phase with each other, suggesting that ecological interactions drive the cycles. These interactions are worthy of further investigation.

Semantinė paieška įdarbinimo paslaugų sistemai / Semantic search for engagement services systemLionikienė, Aldona 30 May 2006 (has links)
Recruitment service domain is one of the most relevant domains, where more advanced and effective semantic search methods and complex matching techniques must be applied. Recruitment system is a specific portal, designated for job seekers and employers. The main goal of this work is to create online recruitment system based on semantic search for preselecting candidates and to investigate the principles for creating such systems. We analyze semantic matching algorithm witch would improve query results, the realization chances of such a scenario from the technological viewpoint and describe a prototypical implementation of the required technological infrastructure. Using current standards and classifications it is possible to create human resource ontology allowing semantic annotation of job postings and applications. This work is devoted for requirements specification, design and implementation of recruitment system, allowing to deploy and examine various semantic matching techniques. Using Semantic Web technologies in the domain of online recruitment, could substantially increase market transparency, lower the transaction costs for employers, and change the business models of the intermediaries involved.
