Application of Partial Nitritation/Anammox Process for Treatment of Wastewater with High Salinity.

The combination of partial nitritation and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) is a composting way to remove the nitrogen in the wastewater. In this article the analysis was made to investigate how the salinity in the wastewater affects the process. Two strategies of salt concentration increase were tested in two reactors. The physical, chemical parameters and the activity of the bacteria in the reactors were monitored. The results of two strategies were compared and the reactor with less salt in each period showed higher bacteria activities and efficiency. Finally the outlook for the future research was made.

Phosphorus Removal and Recovery from Wastewater using Magnetite

The aim of this work was to study the possibilities of using magnetite for phosphorus removal and recovery from wastewater. It was also aimed to investigate how the structure of magnetite influences the efficiency of adsorption and desorption of phosphorus. Methodology used in this study is literature review and laboratory experiments. The study is mainly focused on the influence of Fe(II)/Fe(III) ratio in magnetite (coefficient K) on the P removal and recovery rate. Several sets of experiments were also done to study the influence of some factors (e.g. contact time, starting concentrations, amount of base needed, etc.) on the efficiency of the processes. Study results showed that magnetite has a great potential for phosphorus removal because of its high efficiency, especially at low concentrations of input phosphorus. It was also found that the contact time and sedimentation time of the method is relatively small. Recovering of magnetite is also possible, but for its reuse additional renovation stage is needed. It was concluded that magnetite purification could be preferably used as the polishing method. It can be introduced in already existing wastewater treatment facilities and substitute some older technologies. The method seems to be easy in starting and operation; it has relatively low operational and investment costs.

Nitrogen Removal in the Pilot Plant ITEST (Increased Technology in Sewage Treatment).

Regions with a cold winter, as in the Baltic countries, have a problem to meet the nitrogen requirement in the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive 98/15/EC. Especially in the winter season, the temperature of the influent wastewater could arrive also below 10°C and this delays the biological processes that takes place in the wastewater treatment. With the decrease of the temperature, the efficiency of nitrogen removal in the system decreases and leads to a high nitrogen loading in the effluent. The ITEST (Increased Technology and Efficiency in Sewage Treatment) project situated in Hammarby Sjöstadsverk in Stockholm has as its main aim to enhance nitrogen removal, thereby increasing the temperature in the incoming wastewater. The pilot plant ITEST is comprised of two treatment lines, one works with natural temperature influent and the other works at the temperature of 20 °C. In order to warm the incoming water a heating system, using waste heat, is used, leading to save energy. The two test lines were compared analyzing different parameters from January to May 2013. Total nitrogen, nitrate-nitrogen and ammonium-nitrogen concentrations were measured in the incoming water and in the effluent from the two treatment lines. Hence, the efficiency of the nitrogen removal was compared between the reference and the temperature line. In the period where the system was well functioning, the results show a nitrogen efficiency with a maximum of 92 % of removal of total nitrogen for the temperature line compared to only 65 % for the reference line. In the period where the system did not have any troubles the total nitrogen is under 10 mg/l, which is the limit of total nitrogen discharges specified in the Directive. Instead, for the sludge volume and the suspended solids any particular difference can be noticed from the two lines of treatment. In conclusion, in the temperature line can be noticed a great efficiency in nitrogen removal compared to the reference line.

Channel Geomorphic Evolution After Dam Removal: Is Scale Important?

Post-dam removal geomorphologic adjustment of a stream channel has been documented in the scientific literature at watershed, hillslope, and laboratory scales. Hillslope-scale studies in channel cross sections are most common and add significant value in the dam-removal literature. This study examines geomorphic stream channel adjustment following dam removal at the hillslope scale under natural climatic conditions. A sedimentfilled silt fence dam (1 m tall, 12.65 m wide) was removed in three stages, and the width and depth of the upstream developing channel was monitored at six transects for 15 months. Headcut retreat and changes in channel sinuosity were also recorded. After the silt fence dam was removed, channel development was initiated by headcut formation, which migrated upstream at a rate of 4 cm/d for about 10 months and then gradually reached attenuation. The channel progressed through four distinct stages: Stage 1 (Initial conditions); Stage 2 (Downcutting)-wide, shallow, meandering channel incised to a maximum depth of 0.52 m, and sinuosity decreased; Stage 3 (Floodplain development)-upon reaching base level, surface runoff began to meander within the channel, widening it through bank slumps and erosion; and Stage 4 (Quasi-equilibrium)-channel development reached dynamic (quasi-) equilibrium with only minor widening at downstream transects (maximum width of the incised channel reached 0.46 m), accompanied by sediment aggradation. The stages of upstream channel development and headcut retreat pattern in this study are consistent with the findings of other studies at the laboratory and watershed scales, indicating that channel development after dam removal is scale independent.

Effect of Long-Chain Fatty Acids on Anaerobic Digestion

An investigation was carried out to study whether long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) have an effect on digestion of waste sludge under anaerobic conditions. Four different kinds of LCFAs were used in this study. The 18 carbon series with 0, 1, 2 and 3 double bonds were studied to evaluate the degree of saturation on fatty acid degradation. Due to their molecular structure, unsaturated LCFAs are more soluble than saturated LCFAs. Oleic, linoleic, linolenic acid with an ascending number of double bonds were tested as representatives for three different degrees of saturation. In addition, stearic acid, a saturated fatty acid was also tested. LCFAs were added to sewage sludge at concentrations ranging from 5% to 20% on a weight basis and the pH, solids reduction and COD reduction were determined. The results suggested that in addition to degrading in the digesters, all unsaturated acids contributed additional solids removal, compared to the control group. In contrast, stearic acid did not affect the solids removal. The COD reduction was similar to solids reduction in that additional COD was destroyed when unsaturated LCFAs were added to the sludge. Removal and Utilization of Wastewater Nutrients for Algae Biomass and Biofuels

The Logan City Environmental Department operates a facility that consists of 460 acres of fairly shallow lagoons (~ 5'deep) for biological wastewater treatment that meets targets for primary and secondary treatments (solids, biological oxygen demand (BOD), and pathogen removal). Significant natural algal growth occurs in these lagoons, which improves BOD removal through oxygenation and also facilitates N removal through volatilization as ammonia under high pH conditions created by algal growth. Phosphorus, however, is non-volatile and stays in the water and likely cycles in and out of algal cells as they grow and die in the lagoons. In the near future, the regulatory limits on phosphorus released from the Logan wastewater treatment facility are likely to become significantly lower to counter potential downstream eutrophication. One way to potentially lower phosphorus levels in the wastewater effluent is through management of algal growth in the lagoons. As mentioned above, algae growth naturally occurs in the treatment lagoons and if the algal biomass is harvested when growth yields are highest, the phosphorus contained in the cells could be removed to obtain phosphorus-free water. The algal biomass could then be used for production of biofuels. This research focuses on laboratory and pilot assessments to show the ability of algae indigenous to the Logan lagoons to uptake phosphorus and produce biomass that can be used for biofuel production.

This work is dealing with the utilization of biomass feed stocks and wooden residue for gasification process to produce syn-gas suitable for the implementation of power plants for electricity generation and problem of gas production suitable for further chemical and energy purpose discussing the suitable practical purification methods, given that the complexity of theme and project which carried out through detailed analysis. Since the obtained gas has many types of unwanted contaminants. It was necessary to derive an effective cleaning method for gas purification from chemical contaminants especially tars components. The discussion of the definitions and methods for the determination of gas unwanted components and their removal technologies on the basis of the knowledge of data, collecting and analysis carried out through an experimental massive approach. The theoretical analysis of the gasification process for an effective tar reduction in the produced gas has been studied as well. Since the quality requirements for internal combustion engines, gas turbines and fuel cells using the primary measurement methods cannot be achieved for gas production, this work aimed removing different particulates and tar. The main emphasis is placed on the methods of high cleaning taking in account the chemical and thermal specifications of the gas which is based on the utilization of three different kinds of carbon materials successfully and efficiently char coal, black coke and active carbon for tar removal which has a major impact on the process parameters. The analysis was responding with the mechanism and the techniques of minimizing the resultant allowable concentration by using a suitable materials and verifying the operation conditions without affecting the gas thermal efficiency. The highlights of the theoretical and experimental work has been drawn up by a high concept cleaning allowing the production of a pure gas having a quality that meets the modern technical requirements for electricity generation. Functionality the most efficient cleaning methods were based in the current project for tar reduction on the quantity of tar removed, the materials used for tar cracking and the conditions of the experimental work as well. For a successful application, some proposals have been settled for industrial applications of gas cleaning.
