Modelling silver transport in spherical HTR fuelVan der Merwe, Jacobus Johannes 17 October 2009 (has links)
For direct cycle gas cooled high temperature reactor designs, operating conditions may be limited as a result of excessive maintenance dose rates caused by the 110mAg source term on the turbine. The accurate prediction of silver fission and activation products’ release during normal operation is required to ensure regulatory compliance and economic viability of planned power plants. Fuel qualification programs should provide satisfactory results to ensure correct analyses, but will however not be available for many years. In the meantime data from the German fuel development program may be utilized. Traditionally diffusion models were used to derive transport parameters from limited irradiation testing of fuel materials and components. Best estimates for all applicable German fuel irradiation tests with defendable uncertainty ranges were never derived. However, diffusion theory and current parameters cannot account for all irradiation and heat-up test results, and for some tests, it appears unacceptably conservative. Other transport mechanisms have been suggested and alternative calculation models are being considered. In this thesis the relevant German material and irradiation tests were evaluated with the current PBMR metallic fission product release calculation model. Transport through all the fuel materials and components and from the sphere to the coolant gas was considered and best possible models and parameters were suggested. For the transport of silver through the SiC layer an alternative suggested model called the Molecular Vapour Transport Release (MVR) Model was evaluated against the traditional diffusion model. From this evaluation it was shown that classical diffusion modelling was still a viable model to predict silver transport in SiC. The MVR model was found to be a feasible model as well. However, due to the much larger verification and validation effort required, it was decided to use the diffusion model until such time that experimental results become available that might elucidate the exact physical transport model. The evaluation also showed that the diffusion model used must be quantified in a detailed evaluation of all applicable irradiation tests. A study of all German irradiation tests was previously performed and the applicable irradiation tests were identified. A detailed evaluation of these irradiation tests were performed with an updated diffusion model. New transport and material parameters were derived in this detailed evaluation and compared with existing values. An evaluation of some heat-up tests of irradiated fuel spheres was performed to assess the range for which the newly derived transport parameters are valid. The different models with their old and newly derived parameters were used to analyse sample PBMR cores. Recommendations were made to the suitability of the different models and parameters for future PBMR silver fission and activation product analyses. / Thesis (DPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2009. / Physics / unrestricted

Med Study: The correlation between sport participation and scholastic results This research was performed to determine if there is a correlation between sport particiaption and scholastic outcomes, especially their academic results of high school students. The motivation theories and the influence of motivation on these outcomes were taken in consideration. The hypothesis that students who perform well in sport also perform well academically, has been the focus point of this research. The quantitative research method was used and two schools were randomly selected for this purpose. A sample of 200 scholars in the 1st and under 16A sport teams participated in this research. Some of the results are as follows:

The scholars that participated in sports outperformed their fellow students academically.

The scholars that participated in sports spend more hours per week on sport as oppose to their studies.

The most important motivational factor for participating in sport is for the love of the sport .

The most important motivational factor for studying is that the scholars focus on their future.
This research concluded that there is a definitive correlation between sport and academic performance. Thus children must be encouraged to participate in sport at any level; it will definitely enhance their scholastic outcomes. / Dissertation (MEd (Education Management)--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Education Management and Policy Studies / unrestricted

Assessing Early-Stage Research Results: An Application of Characteristics of Innovation FrameworksAlhassan, Enas January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this study is to identify characteristics that can be used to assess early-stage research results by research users and research producers of the advanced biofuel sector. Mainly, it qualitatively explores the perceptions of both research users and research producers regarding their experiences with research results. The study builds on the models of Diffusion of Innovation (DoI), Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and Perceived Characteristics of Innovation (PCI).
The findings of this study suggest that the investigated dimensions of DoI, PCI and TAM are applicable to the context of assessing research results with the extra dimension of risk reduction. In particular, some of the criteria used to assess the usefulness of research results are through its originality, scalability and relevance. The findings also suggest that documentation and publication are important to research users: Research users assess ease of use based on the presentation of the research results in their documentation; and they assess the quality of research results based on publications and the reputation of researchers.
The findings of this study can be used to tailor research results to research users’ needs, which in turn can be expected to improve the uptake and further development of research results. This will not only permit the push of scientific research results to research users only put also permit research users to inform research needs.

Testovanie vplyvu kvartálnych výsledkov a očakávaní analytikov na cenu vybraných akciových titulov / Testing the impact of quarterly results and analysts' expectations on prices of selected equitiesŠoltés, Viktor January 2010 (has links)
The aim of the article is to find the relationship between the growth and decline in the share price during the promulgation period of quarterly results of companies and surprise, either positive or negative in the quarterly results. Quarterly results are compared with the forecasts of analysts who publish their forecasts for quarterly results at Thomson Reuters. Relationship is confirmed statistically, where stock returns in the period is the dependent variable, independent variables are three -- return of the corresponding market index, excess impact -- measure of surprise in quarterly results in comparison with analysts' estimates and VIX index. Linear regression is used for testing of return and GARCH model is used for testing of volatility, there is focus on adaptation of actual volatility to the long-term average volatility after accidental shock.

The influential commitment of teachers on the improvement of pupils’ scholastic resultsPenso, Eric 07 June 2011 (has links)
The hypothesis which I would like to bring about at the beginning of this survey is on the following : It is not the training experience which in itself is the deciding factor, but the training drive. To be more precise, it is not the enrollment in a training program which can alter the course of events but the teacher's formulation or teaching staff's questioning. To emphasize my thesis, I have made up four groups of teachers : the first group (Experimental Group) is which made up of fifteen teaching staff having requested a training session on the usage of the national primary school evaluations for eight year olds, following the next school year with the same group of pupils and the above staff succeeding in obtaining their teacher's training education. The second group is made up of teachers who have requested to be enrolled but have not been accepted. The third group is made up of teachers which have not wished to be trained and having nevertheless been officially enrolled in this training session. The fourth group is made up of teachers who have not asked anything and who will not be enrolled. 564 pupils (around 140 per group) have been evaluated at three successive periods, during one year. This has given me to bring about a comparative analysis, and draw some conclusions on the influential commitment with or without training on pupils' scholastic performance.

In the context of project management, new approaches emerged aiming to monitor changes in the business environment with agility and generating innovative in developing new technologies, products and services results. The Agile Project Management (APM) arose from the union of some principles and values, which have in the focus on individuals the main difference from other approaches in project management. Given this focus, it is necessary to show which factors may be associated with successful implementation of GAP to obtain the agility and innovative results. Thus, the overall goal of this study is to identify the success factors of agile project management and how they can contribute, through the practices of agile management in achieving results in agility and innovative projects. The specific objectives are: (i) identify practices, success factors, indicators and agile management tools highlighted projects in the literature, (ii) identify the importance of these success factors to determine the speed and facilitate the generation of innovation results; (iii) identify practices associated with the success factors highlighted in this study between professionals; (iv) characterize a format and structure for implementation of agile project management based on the success factors identified in a service company. To answer each of the objectives presented, this paper was structured as three items associated with each of the specific objectives presented. Thus, the work was composed of a systematic literature review (Article 1), a research -type survey (Article 2) and a case study (Article 3) . The first article identified the success factors as well as the practices, indicators and benefits of GAP. In the second article, we selected six success factors related to the focus on individuals (autonomy, coordination, collaboration, communication, flexibility and continuous learning) and after it was found the importance of each in determining the agility and facilitation for generating innovative results. In the third article, a case study, consisting of interviews with professionals with experience in GAP for a diagnosis of the project area of a service business was conducted. The end result was the characterization and structure of a format implementation for the company under study. The results of this dissertation can’t be generalized, however, seek to clarify some elements associated with successful Agile Project Management, serving as a guide for future studies.

The strengthening of local authorities, foreseen in the 1988 Constitution, reassured wider autonomy to cities so they would be able to run their tributary resources and, within the scope of the Rule-of-Law State, it is the responsibility of the municipal government, the offer regulation and admission to mandatory basic education. Therefore, the city schools managers of Caxias do Sul; when obtain the federal, state and municipal resources – establish their priorities so the appropriated funds can be used. The research aims to list the financial investment in education, taking into account the evasion, approbation and reprobation results in the period of 2010 to 2012. It’s about a qualitative-quantitative research, presenting primary and secondary data which was obtained through semi-structured interviews and took place at ten different schools, as well as the analysis of the documents which provided information about the revenue that was appropriated in the period of three years to each school and the respective final results. The data analysis technique which was used was the content analysis one. Once it enhances the understanding of a speech, the deepening of the technical features and it elicits its most important moments. The research was based on Paulo Freire and Paro’s principles, as well as the resolutions foreseen in the Federal Constitution. The results led to the conclusion that the connection between the investment and the approbation and reprobation results is real. Once the revenue appropriated to each school depends on the number of students. Therefore, it can be concluded that the more students are enrolled in a school, the higher the approbation rate will be and, consequently, the reprobation rate will decrease. Regarding the evasion students, there is no connection with the investments, so this data may be linked to the area where the school is located.
