Operating systems for resource constraint Internet of Things devices: An evaluation

Elvstam, Andreas, Nordahl, Daniel January 2016 (has links)
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a large and rapidly expanding area with regards to both hardware platforms and software. When it comes to hardware platforms for the IoT some are more powerful and able to run a traditional OS like Linux, while other platforms are too constraint to do so. To ease the development within the IoT area an appropriate IoT OS is needed for these constrained hardware platforms, which can handle most of the functionality a traditional OS offer. Therefore, we evaluate IoT OSs targeted for low performance battery powered devices. In this thesis Contiki, mbed, RIOT and Zephyr are evaluated. The aim of this evaluation is to determine important IoT OS characteristics for resource constrained devices, and to highlight difficulties and experiences related to the building process of prototypes for such IoT devices. The evaluation of the IoT OSs were conducted on four types of data with regards to several measurable OS characteristics according to a criteria based evaluation method. The evaluation resulted in a list of six IoT OS characteristics important for wireless, resource constrained and battery powered devices. Furthermore the evaluation highlights potential setbacks during the building process of a prototype system for such devices and it also explains what experiences that can be gained. The conclusion of this thesis contributes with experience related to IoT OS prototype construction and also an evaluation result with respect to the six IoT OS characteristics for constraint battery driven devices.

Chemical control. Exploring mechanisms for the regulation of riot control agents, incapacitants and related means of delivery.

Crowley, Michael J.A. January 2012 (has links)
A holistic arms control (HAC) analytical framework was employed to explore the full range of mechanisms that could potentially be utilised to effectively regulate the development, stockpiling, transfer or use of riot control agents (RCAs), incapacitants and related means of delivery. From this analysis it is clear that the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and its attendant regime are the most appropriate and probably the most receptive mechanisms, at least in the short term, for the discussion of these concerns and the development of appropriate policy responses. However, the response of CWC States Parties to these issues is by no means certain and parallel processes should be established to explore alternative regulatory mechanisms with the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention, UN drugs conventions, international and regional human rights instruments, international humanitarian law, and transfer controls potentially yielding positive results in the next five to ten year period. Other regimes that may well prove important in the longer term include: the international criminal court and other international criminal law entities; the UN Secretary General¿s investigation mechanism and other ad hoc UN investigatory mechanisms. A comprehensive HAC strategy for the regulation of RCAs, incapacitants and related means of delivery will also require active involvement of informed and activist civil society in societal verification; development and promotion of norms prohibiting the involvement of scientific and medical communities in weaponisation programmes intended for malign application; and far greater active engagement of such expert communities in relevant State and international policy development processes.

LoRa Radio Performance Analysis Based on AVR-RSS2 and RIOT-OS for Indoor IoT Applications

Yi, HongShuo, Dai, Duosi January 2023 (has links)
This thesis is dedicated to measuring the communication performance of LoRa technology in an indoor environment and providing insight into its potential application as an effective Internet of Things (IoT) communication solution in Low Power Wide Area Networks (LPWAN). Through careful experimentation and analysis, we assessed various transmission parameters such as spreading factor (SF), bandwidth (BW), Payload Length (PL), and LoRaWAN classes. Performance metrics including Receive Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR), Round-trip time (RTT), and Goodput are measured to evaluate LoRa’s performance under different settings. The research question addressed is whether LoRa can be effectively used for indoor wireless communication. Our findings demonstrate that LoRa technology exhibits good transmission range, reliability, and cost-effectiveness in indoor environments, making it suitable for some indoor IoT applications. We also examined the impact of different LoRaWAN device classes and highlighted the importance of balancing the SF and BW to optimize communication performance. In conclusion, this thesis offers a comprehensive understanding of the communication performance of LoRa technology in indoor environments, providing valuable guidance for its practical application in indoor IoT communication. The research findings presented herein serve as a significant reference for future research endeavors in this field, enabling further advancements in the domain of LoRa-based wireless communication technologies for indoor IoT applications.

Come As You Are, As I Want You to Be: Grunge/Riot Grrrl Pedagogy and Identity Construction in the Second Year Writing Program

Callais, Rory J 02 August 2012 (has links)
A look at how artists in the grunge and Riot Grrrl movements constructed public identities that typically appealed to the economic, cultural, and social conditions of the early 1990s. These public personas -- perceived as “honest” -- were defined by negotiation with mainstream culture, the notion of the “confessional,” and gender construction. By examining how these identities were constructed, composition students can see how cultural influences mediate their own identity construction. A “grunge/Riot Grrrl” pedagogy is proposed that encourages students to look at how identities are constructed across a multimedia landscape, reflecting the way grunge and Riot Grrrl artists built public personas using music, lyrics, interviews, album covers, photo shoots, and videos. An online assignment is suggested that would allow students to “profile” their public selves and the cultural conditions that influence them so that students can use multimedia to show their public identities.

Labry, Manon 23 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
