Fusion: a Visualization Framework for Interactive Ilp Rule Mining With Applications to Bioinformatics

Indukuri, Kiran Kumar 04 January 2005 (has links)
Microarrays provide biologists an opportunity to find the expression profiles of thousands of genes simultaneously. Biologists try to understand the mechanisms underlying the life processes by finding out relationships between gene-expression and their functional categories. Fusion is a software system that aids the biologists in performing microarray data analysis by providing them with both visual data exploration and data mining capabilities. Its multiple view visual framework allows the user to choose different views for different types of data. Fusion uses Proteus, an Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) rule finding algorithm to mine relationships in the microarray data. Fusion allows the user to explore the data interactively, choose biases, run the data mining algorithms and visualize the discovered rules. Fusion has the capability to smoothly switch across interactive data exploration and batch data mining modes. This optimizes the knowledge discovery process by facilitating a synergy between the interactivity and usability of visualization process with the pattern-finding abilities of ILP rule mining algorithms. Fusion was successful in helping biologists better understand the mechanisms underlying the acclimatization of certain varieties of Arabidopsis to ozone exposure. / Master of Science

Handling emergent conflicts in adaptable rule-based sensor networks

Blum, Jesse Michael January 2012 (has links)
This thesis presents a study into conflicts that emerge amongst sensor device rules when such devices are formed into networks. It describes conflicting patterns of communication and computation that can disturb the monitoring of subjects, and lower the quality of service. Such conflicts can negatively affect the lifetimes of the devices and cause incorrect information to be reported. A novel approach to detecting and resolving conflicts is presented. The approach is considered within the context of home-based psychiatric Ambulatory Assessment (AA). Rules are considered that can be used to control the behaviours of devices in a sensor network for AA. The research provides examples of rule conflict that can be found for AA sensor networks. Sensor networks and AA are active areas of research and many questions remain open regarding collaboration amongst collections of heterogeneous devices to collect data, process information in-network, and report personalised findings. This thesis presents an investigation into reliable rule-based service provisioning for a variety of stakeholders, including care providers, patients and technicians. It contributes a collection of rules for controlling AA sensor networks. This research makes a number of contributions to the field of rule-based sensor networks, including areas of knowledge representation, heterogeneous device support, system personalisation, and in particular, system reliability. This thesis provides evidence to support the conclusion that conflicts can be detected and resolved in adaptable rule-based sensor networks.

The Effects of a Conflicting Instruction on a Fr 5 Performance

Koremura, Yuka 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of a conflicting instruction on FR-5 performances by an ABABC design. After all four college students were consistently pressing 1-5-3 followed by sound-clips, the schedule value changed to FR-5 (A). Then they were presented with the written instruction "Press 426" (B) in addition to the previous condition. In the last condition (C), 1-5-3 responses were then scheduled for extinction in three participants and the reinforcer was changed from sound-clips to points for one participant. The results showed that unlike previous experiments, instructions did not override the scheduled contingencies. Instruction-following occurred only when there were no other contingencies (i.e., extinction of 1-5-3) or the scheduled reinforcer for FR-5 performances was weak.

A SLDNF based formalization for updates and abduction

Lakkaraju, Sai Kiran, University of Western Sydney, College of Science, Technology and Environment, School of Computing and Information Technology January 2001 (has links)
Knowledge representation and inference are the backbone of artificial intelligence, and logic programming is one of the most widely used knowledge representation tools. Logic programming with deduction/induction/abduction as the reasoning technique is serving numerous fields of artificial intelligence. In dynamic domains where there are constant changes in knowledge, updating the knowledge base is crucial to keep it stable. This thesis investigates the issues in updating the knowledge base. Two types of logic program based updates are considered, simple fact based updates where the knowledge base is updated by a simple fact, and rule based updates where the knowledge base is updated by a rule. A SLDNF based procedural approach is proposed to implement such updates. This thesis also investigates the issues involved in simple fact based and rule based abduction, and it is observed that updates are closely related to abduction. A SLDNF based procedural approach to perform simple fact/rule based updates and abduction is proposed as a result of this study / Master of Science (Hons)

The Role of the 'Legal Rule' in Indonesian Law: environmental law and the reformasi of water management

Waddell, Sarah Kathleen January 2004 (has links)
In examining the role of the legal rule in Indonesian law, and in particular environmental law related to water quality management, this thesis questions the often expressed view that laws in Indonesia are sound, they merely fail to be implemented. It proposes that this appraisal of the situation does not take a sufficiently deep assessment and that a cause for non-implementation lies within the drafting of the laws themselves. It is argued that the ineffective system for environmental protection in Indonesia can be related to a failure to recognise the role of the legal rule in environmental law. A proposition presented in this thesis is that the arrangements for environmental law making in Indonesia lacks a strong rule foundation and, for this reason, it is not capable of producing shared understandings by lawmakers about producing and reproducing environmental law as legal sub-system. Another central proposition is that Indonesian environmental law has a form and style, which negates the role of the legal rule in environmental management and control. Despite the changes brought by reformasi, the central position of the legal rule in environmental law and, indeed, the necessary rule foundation to the development of the legal system, has yet to achieve full recognition. If this situation is related to the system of water quality management and pollution control in Indonesia, it can be seen that environmental improvement will not be achieved until underlying issues concerning the structure, form and style of environmental law making are addressed.

Assessing Adverse Impact: An Alternative to the Four-Fifths Rule

Ercan, Seydahmet 06 September 2012 (has links)
The current study examines the behaviors of four adverse impact measurements: the 4/5ths rule, two tests of significance (ZD and ZIR), and a newly developed AI measurement (Lnadj). Upon the suggestion of the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Program Manual about the sensitivity of the assessment of AI when the sample size is very large (Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, 2002), Lnadj is a new statistic that has been developed and proposed as an alternative practical significance test to the 4/5ths rule. The results indicated that, unlike the 4/5ths rule and other tests for adverse impact, Lnadj is an index of practical significance that is less sensitive to differences across selection conditions that are not supposed to affect tests of adverse impact. Furthermore, Lnadj decreases Type I error rates when there is a small d value and Type II error rates when there is moderate to large d value.

Development of Models for Rule Based Decision Support for Flight Plans in a Synthetic Environment

Özdeğer, Tuğçe January 2012 (has links)
Route specification can be a time consuming process in flight planning, and at the same time, it should be done very diligently for the sake of a safe flight and to reach the target on time. An autonomous decision support system can save time spent on finding the most accurate and shortest route from departure to destination. Different kinds of external sources are used as input for making intelligent decisions by taking advantage of a rule based reasoning approach. In this regard, a rule based decision support concept based on Drools rule engine is proposed in order to ease the workload of pilots during route specification.
