Ethylbenzene dehydrogenation into styrene: kinetic modeling and reactor simulation

A fundamental kinetic model based upon the Hougen-Watson formalism was derived as a basis not only for a better understanding of the reaction behavior but also for the design and simulation of industrial reactors. Kinetic experiments were carried out using a commercial potassium-promoted iron catalyst in a tubular reactor under atmospheric pressure. Typical reaction conditions were temperature = 620oC, steam to ethylbenzene mole ratio = 11, and partial pressure of N2 diluent = 0.432 bar. Experimental data were obtained for different operating conditions, i.e., temperature, feed molar ratio of steam to ethylbenzene, styrene to ethylbenzene, and hydrogen to ethylbenzene and space time. The effluent of the reactor was analyzed on-line using two GCs. Kinetic experiments for the formation of minor by-products, i.e. phenylacetylene, α-methylstyrene, β-methylstyrene, etc, were conducted as well. The reaction conditions were: temperature = 600oC ~ 640oC, a molar ratio of steam to ethylbenzene = 6.5, and partial pressure of N2 diluent = 0.43 bar and 0.64 bar. The products were analyzed by off-line GC. The mathematical model developed for the ethylbenzene dehydrogenation consists of nonlinear simultaneous differential equations in multiple dependent variables. The parameters were estimated from the minimization of the multiresponse objective function which was performed by means of the Marquardt algorithm. All the estimated parameters satisfied the statistical tests and physicochemical criteria. The kinetic model yielded an excellent fit of the experimental data. The intrinsic kinetic parameters were used with the heterogeneous fixed bed reactor model which is explicitly accounting for the diffusional limitations inside the porous catalyst. Multi-bed industrial adiabatic reactors with axial flow and radial flow were simulated and the effect of the operating conditions on the reactor performance was investigated. The dynamic equilibrium coke content was calculated using detailed kinetic model for coke formation and gasification, which was coupled to the kinetic model for the main reactions. The calculation of the dynamic equilibrium coke content provided a crucial guideline for the selection of the steam to ethylbenzene ratio leading to optimum operating conditions.

SOIL ADHERENCE TO SOLID SURFACES: RELATION WITH FOULING AND CLEANING

This doctoral research was realized within the frame of the SMARTNET Project which aimed at developing coatings to improve the cleanability of stainless steel, targeting open surface applications. Throughout this thesis, the radial-flow cell was selected to study the removal of different soils due to its ability to generate well-controlled wall shear stress distributions on the investigated surfaces. Model surfaces were selected for their different physico-chemical and mechanical properties to study the interactions between the soils and the surfaces in detail. A thin layer chromatography sprayer giving a narrower and more reproducible droplet sizes distribution was preferred to mimic splashing and produce controlled spatters. The first experimental campaign involving oil droplets showed that the analytical models available to relate the detachment radius with the critical wall shear stress (minimal wall shear stress required for soil detachment) and the soil adhesion strength in the radial flow cell could only be applied for weakly adherent soils for which removal occurs below 3 Pa, due to the complex hydrodynamics near the inlet. Consequently, the flow inside the radial-flow cell has been characterized using computational fluid dynamics over the whole inlet laminar regime and validated experimentally. Studying the adherence of starch granule aggregates in the radial-flow cell revealed that the conversion of critical radius into critical wall shear stress may be biased when the adhering aggregate height is not negligible with respect to the channel height and when the adherence is such that flow rates above creeping flow conditions are required for soil detachment. The influence of several environmental factors and substrate properties was then examined to improve the understanding of the mechanisms affecting soiling and cleanability. By influencing droplet spreading and competition between capillary forces at the granule-substrate and granule-granule interfaces, substrate wettability affects the shape and compactness of the adhering aggregates, the efficiency of shear forces upon cleaning, and finally the adherence of soiling particles. Macromolecules originating from the starch granules suspension are adsorbed on the substrate from the liquid phase or carried by the retracting film and accumulated at the granule-substrate interface. They influence granule adherence by acting as an adhesive joint, the properties of which seem to be influenced by the detailed history of drying and exposure to humidity. On compliant substrates, the aggregate-substrate interactions induce stresses at the granule-substrate interface which may lead to substrate deformation and promote a more intimate contact between the granules and their substrate, thereby appreciably increasing adherence.

Radial flow effects on a retreating rotor blade

This work studies the effects of radial flow on the aerodynamic phenomena occurring on a retreating blade with a focus on dynamic stall and reverse flow as applied to both a helicopter rotor in forward flight and a wind turbine operating at a yaw angle. While great progress has been made in understanding the phenomenon of two-dimensional dynamic stall, the effect of rotation on the dynamic stall event is not well understood. Experiments were conducted on a rigid two bladed teetering rotor at high advance ratios in a low speed wind tunnel. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements were used to quantify the flow field at several azimuthal angles on the rotating blade during the dynamic stall event. The effect of centrifugal forces induced ``pure'' radial velocity on the dynamic stall event at 270 degrees azimuth was studied in detail. Further investigation of the radial flow field suggested that the mean radial velocity attenuated on moving outboard due to an apparent shear layer instability and it was demonstrated to be of first order importance in the flow field. These radial flow results prompted an exploration of the flow over a rotating disk to establish similarities of the radial flow over rotating blade in separated flow to that over a rotating disk in separated flow. While a greater part of this work focused on aspects of dynamic stall on the retreating blade, the final parts focus on the exotic flow regime of reverse flow (characterized by flow from the trailing edge to the leading edge of the blade). Aerodynamic loads measurement and surface flow visualization via tufts are used to first quantify the behavior of a static yawed blade in reverse flow. PIV measurements are then used on a static yawed blade and a rotating blade in reverse flow conditions to ascertain the effects of rotation on reverse flow.

Pumping test inference of saturated/unsaturated aquifer properties

Analytical solutions for aquifer response to pumping are commonly used to infer the hydraulic properties of aquifers. This dissertation develops new analytical solutions for the analysis of pumping test data from confined and unconfined aquifer.An analytical solution for flow to a partially penetrating well of infinitesimally small radius in a compressible unconfined aquifer is developed that allows inferring its saturated and unsaturated hydraulic properties from drawdowns recorded in the saturated and/or the unsaturated zone. The effects of unsaturated zoneconstitutive parameters and thickness on drawdowns in the saturated and unsaturated zones as functions of position and time is investigated; the solution is validated against numerical simulations of drawdown in a synthetic aquifer having unsaturated properties described by the van Genuchten (1980) - Mualem (1976)constitutive model; used to analyze drawdown data from a pumping test conducted by the US Geological Survey at Cape Cod,Massachusetts; and corresponding estimates of van Genuchten - Mualem parameters are compared with laboratoryvalues obtained for similar materials in the area.Drawdowns generated by extracting water from a large diameter (e.g. water supply) well are affected by wellbore storage. An analytical solution in Laplace transformed space for drawdown in a uniformanisotropic confined aquifer caused by withdrawing water at a constant rate from a partially penetrating well with storage is developed. When the pumping well is fully penetrating the solution reduces to that of Papadopulos and Cooper (1967); to that of Hantush (1964) when the pumping well has no wellbore storage; to the solution of Theis (1935) when both conditions are fulfilled; and to that of Yang et al. (2006) when the pumping well is partially penetrating, having finite radius but lacking storage. The solutionis validated against synthetic pumping test data and used to explore graphically the effects of partial penetration, wellbore storage and anisotropy on time evolutions of drawdown in the pumping well and in observation wells.The analytical solution for unconfined aquifers is extended to the case of a finite diameter pumping well with storage. The extended analytical solution is used to investigate the effects of storage in the pumping well and delayed piezometer response on drawdowns in the saturated and unsaturated zones as functions of position and time. The solution is validated against numerical simulations of drawdown in a synthetic aquifer having unsaturated properties described by the van Genuchten (1980) - Mualem (1976) model. It is then used to analyze a seven-day pumping test conducted by University of Waterloo researchers at the Canadian Forces Base Borden in Ontario, Canada; and to compare our results with those ofMoench (2008).

O presente trabalho tem por objetivo propor uma metodologia para o dimensionamento da potência tracionária em função do percurso percorrido por veículos elétricos, assim como realizar o projeto básico de uma máquina elétrica para suprir a carga tracionária exigida. Os cálculos foram realizados através de um algoritmo onde o usuário insere as variáveis mecânicas do veículo e recebe a potência e conjugado necessários, e o projeto elementar da máquina que deverá equipar o veículo. Realizou-se um estudo de caso a partir de uma scooter elétrica para validar os resultados, foi projetada uma máquina brushless dc com fluxo radial e rotor externo. Os resultados experimentais atenderam as espectativas de conjugado de 46 Nm, o máximo conjugado estático atingiu 48 Nm e a rotação a vazio obteve valor de 613 rpm à tensão nominal. Os ensaios de frenagem regenerativa com supercapacitores apresentaram resultados promissores com 50% da energia mecânica recebida durante a frenagem entregue na partida do veículo. / The present study aims to propose a methodology for the design of power traction depending on the distance traveled by electrical vehicles, and perform the basic design of an electrical machine to supply the traction load required. The calculations will be performed through an algorithm where the user enters the mechanical variables of the vehicle and receives the power and torque required and the basic machine design that should equip the vehicle. A case study was conducted for an electric scooter considering the designed dc brushless machine with radial flow and external rotor in order to validate the results. The experimental results met the target of 46 Nm of torque, the maximum static torque 48 Nm was reached, and the no-load rotation obtained was 613 rpm at nominal voltage. Regenerative braking tests with super capacitors showed a promising result: 50% of the received mechanical energy during braking was delivered to the vehicle starting.

Dans le but de montrer l’influence de la morphologie fractale d’un agrégat sur son comportement thermophorétique, un nouveau dispositif expérimental a été développé ; le SpectroMètreThermophorétique Circulaire (SMTC). Cet instrument permet de mesurer la vitesse moyenne de thermophorèse des particules dans une zone de sélection comprise entre une plaque chaude et une plaque froide. Pour cela, nous avons développé une fonction de transfert spécifique au principe de l’instrument sur la base des travaux existant sur les analyseurs différentiels de mobilité électrique.Une qualification expérimentale du SMTC a été réalisée avec des billes de latex monodispersées de tailles comprises entre 64 nm et 500 nm. Le bon accord entre les vitesses de thermophorèse obtenues et la théorie de Beresnev et Chernyak (1995) nous a permis de valider le fonctionnement de l’instrument.Par la suite, nous avons comparé les vitesses de thermophorèse expérimentales obtenues avec le SpectroMètre Thermophorétique Circulaire pour des particules sphériques et des agrégats produits par un générateur d’aérosol à combustion. Contrairement aux résultats obtenus avec les billes de latex, nous observons une augmentation de la vitesse de thermophorèse des agrégats avec leur diamètre de mobilité électrique.Grâce à une étude morphologique des agrégats, nous avons remarqué que la vitesse de thermophorèse est dépendante du nombre de particules primaires de l’agrégat. Ces résultats expérimentaux confirment pour la première fois les données théoriques de Mackowski (2006)obtenues par des simulations Monte-Carlo. De plus, une comparaison avec les travaux de Messerer et al. (2003) montre que la vitesse de thermophorèse des agrégats semble indépendante de la taille des particules primaires. / In order to show the influence of the morphology of a fractal aggregate on its thermophoretic behavior, a new experimental device has been developed; the SpectroMètre ThermophorétiqueCirculaire (SMTC). This instrument is used to measure the mean thermophoretic velocity of particles selected between a hot plate and a cold plate thanks to a transfer function based on the geometry of the radial flow differential mobility analyser RF-DMA or SMEC (Spectromètre de Mobilité Electrique Circulaire). For the experimental validation, effective thermophoretic velocities of monodispersed spherical latex particles for diameters ranging from 64 nm to 500 nm and a temperature gradient equal to 50 750 K/m are measured and compared with theoretical values. The good agreement between the experimentals results and theoretical values of Beresnev and Chernyak (1995) helps us to validate the operation of the instrument.Then we compare experimental thermophoretic velocity obtained with the SMTC for spherical particles and aggregates produced by a combustion aerosol generator. Contrary to the results obtained with the PSL particles, we observe that the thermophoretic velocity of aggregates increases with the electrical mobility diameter. Thanks to a morphological study of the aggregates, we showed that the thermophoretic velocity depends on the number of primary particles of the aggregate. These experimental results confirm,for the first time, the theoretical data of Mackowski (2006) obtained by a Monte Carlo simulation. Moreover, a comparison with the experimental results of Messerer et al. (2003) shows that thethermophoretic velocity of aggregates seems independent of the primary particle size.

On the measurement and application of cement grout rheological properties

The rheological properties of cement-based grouts play a key role in determining the final spread in grouted rock formations. Rheologically, cement grouts are known to be complex thixotropic fluids, but their steady flow behavior is often described by fitting the simple Bingham constitutive law to flow curve data. The resultant Bingham parameters are then used in grouting design of e.g. tunnels, to estimate the penetration length. Since cement grouts are thixotropic suspensions, the interpretation of their flow curves as obtained from flow sweeps in concentric cylinder rotational rheometers is often complicated by: the presence of wall slip, sedimentation and unstable flow at low shear rates. A systematic approach to study these effects within the constraints of the concentric cylinder geometry (Couette) and for different cement grout concentrations was carried out as part of the Licentiate research work. Of particular interest was the influence of geometry and flow sweep measurement interval on flow curves, including the characteristic unstable flow branch that appears at applied shear rates that are below the critical shear rate. The unstable flow branch observed below the critical shear rate has been described as a characteristic feature in the flow curves of thixotropic suspensions, e.g. cement grouts, laponite. From a practical standpoint, this information can then be readily used to improve rheological measurements of cement grouts. The existence of the critical shear rate below which no stable flow occurs, plus the complex wall slip phenomenon are then discussed by considering how they affect actual spread in rough and smooth rock fractures. Another major part of the research presented in this thesis relates to the measurement of model yield stress fluid (YSF), i.e. Carbopol, velocity profiles within the radial flow geometry. Radial flow between parallel plates, is an idealized fundamental flow configuration that is often used as a basis for grout spread estimation in planar rock fractures. Compared to other flow configurations with YSFs, e.g. channels, only a limited amount of work has presented analytical solutions, numerical models and especially experimental work for radial flow. Thus, as a first step towards more systematic studies of the plug flow region of YSFs in radial flow the current work presents the design, manufacture and for the first time velocity profile measurements that were conducted by using the pulsed Ultrasound Velocity Profiling (UVP) technique. The current observations for tests carried out with different disk spacings and flow rates show a distinct plug region, coupled with wall slip effects for the Carbopol model YSF fluid that was used. The theoretically predicted velocity profiles and the measured ones agree reasonably well, and the main discrepancies are discussed. Future studies, would then be targeted at improving the current experimental setup, for detailed measurements of the plug flow region along the radial length, which remains a challenging issue for studies on YSFs and engineering applications such as rock grouting design. / Cementbaserade injekteringsmedels reologiska egenskaper har en stor påverkan på strömning och inträngningslängd i sprickigt berg. Medlens reologi är komplex, inklusive tixotropi, men strömningen beskrivs ändå oftast med den enkla linjära Bingham modellen i injekteringssammanhang. De två parametrarna från denna modell, flytgräns och viskositet, används sedan inom injekteringsdesign, för t.ex. tunnlar och dammar, för att bedöma inträngningen. Eftersom cementbaserade medel är tixoptropa suspensioner försvåras utvärderingen vid mätning med konventionella rotationsviskometrar på grund av glidning vid fasta begränsningsytor, sedimentation/separation av partiklarna och instabila flöden vid låga deformationshastigheter. En systematisk mätprocedur för att studera ovanstående problem med rotationsviskometer och koncentriska cylindrar samt olika vanliga vattencementtal, har utförts inom ramen för detta licentiatarbete. Av särskilt intresse har varit att studera effekten av olika geometrier och tidsintervallet mellan mätningarna, inklusive den instabila delen av flödeskurvan då deformationshastigheten är lägre än ett kritiskt värde. Denna del av kurvan har i litteraturen beskrivits som karakteristisk för tixotropa suspensioner, som t.ex. cementbaserade injekteringsmedel. Praktiskt kan ovanstående kunskap användas för att förbättra mätningen av de reologiska egenskaperna. Existensen av en kritisk deformationshastighet under vilken det inte finns något stabilt flöde, i kombination med glidning vid fasta begränsningsytor, diskuteras särskilt med hänsyn till dess påverkan på faktisk inträngning i släta och råa bergsprickor. Ett annat fokus i licentiatarbetet har varit att studera icke-Newtonska modellvätskors (Carbopol) radiella strömning mellan parallella plattor. Denna typ av strömningsgeometri används ofta som en idealiserad konfiguration för strömning i bergsprickor. I jämförelse med andra enklare geometrier, finns endast en begränsad forskning utförd för denna geometri både då det gäller analytiska och numeriska beräkningar men framförallt då det gäller experiment. Som ett första steg inför en mer systematisk undersökning av icke-Newtonsk radiella strömning presenteras i detta arbete framtagandet av en fysisk laboratoriemodell där hastighetsprofilerna mellan plattorna för första gången visualiserats med hjälp av ultraljud. De utförda mätningarna med tre olika öppningar mellan plattorna sam tre olika värden på det konstanta flödet, visar på en distinkt plugg som är ett resultat av vätskans flytgräns samt glidning i gränsskiktet mellan vätskan och plattornas fasta begränsningsytor. En jämförelse mellan uppmätta hastighetsprofiler och analytiskt beräknade diskuteras där resultaten överensstämmer relativt väl, med beaktande av de långtgående förenklade antaganden som krävs för beräkningarna. Fortsatta studier kommer att fokuseras på att förbättra laboratoriemodellen för en mer detaljerad studie av icke-Newtonska vätskors strömning och hur pluggen utvecklas under den radiella inträngningen, vilket fortsättningsvis är av betydelse för design av injektering i bergsprickor. / <p>QC 20190521</p>
