Optical generation of mm-wave signals for use in broadband radio over fiber systems

González Insua, Ignacio 28 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In future cellular radio networks Radio over Fiber (RoF) is a very attractive technology to deliver microwave and millimeter-wave signals containing broad band multimedia services to numerous base stations of the network. The radio signals are placed on an optical carrier and distributed by means of an optical fiber network to the base stations (BS). In the BS the optical signals heterodyne in a photodiode to produce the radio signals which are then sent via a wireless link to the mobile units (MU). The optical fiber network provides high frequency, wideband, low loss and a means of signal distribution immune to electromagnetic interference. In this thesis, different methods of electrooptical upconversion were investigated. The generation of an optical double-sideband with suppressed carrier (DSB-SC) signal is a straightforward method due to the fact that only one optical modulator driven at half the millimeter-wave frequency is required. One or both sidebands were ASK-modulated with baseband data rates of up to 10 Gbps. Optical single sideband modulation proves to be dispersion resilient as error free transmission was demonstrated after 53 km of single mode fiber transmission for data rates up to 10 Gbps. Wireless links up to 7 m were also demonstrated, proving the feasibility of this approach for broadband wireless inhouse access systems. Linearization techniques to suppress optical nonlinearity

Tabatabai, Farbod January 2009 (has links)
This thesis is shown the implementation of the linearization techniques such as feedforward and pre-distortion feedback linearization to suppress the optical components nonlinearities caused by the fibre and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). The simulation verified these two linearization techniques for single tone direct modulation, two tone indirect modulation and ultra wideband input to the optical fibre. These techniques uses the amplified spontaneously emission (ASE) noise reduction in two loops of SOA by a feed-forward and predistortion linearizer and is shown more than 6dB improvement. Also it investigates linearization for the SOA amplifier to cancel out the third order harmonics or inter-modulation distortion (IMD) or four waves mixing. In this project, more than 20 dB reductions is seen in the spectral re-growth caused by the SOA. Amplifier non-linearity becomes more severe with two strong input channels leading to inter-channel distortion which can completely mask a third adjacent channel. The simulations detailed above were performed utilizing optimum settings for the variable gain, phase and delay components in the error correction loop of the feed forward and Predistortion systems and hence represent the ideal situation of a perfect feed-forward and Predistortion system. Therefore it should be consider that complexity of circuit will increase due to amplitude, phase and delay mismatches in practical design. Also it has describe the compatibility of Software Defined Radio with Hybrid Fibre Radio with simulation model of wired optical networks to be used for future research investigation, based on the star and ring topologies for different modulation schemes, and providing the performance for these configurations.

High-capacity communication systems using advanced optical and wireless technologies

Zhu, Ming 08 June 2015 (has links)
The increasing traffic demand from the use of 3G/4G, streaming, and other broadband wireless services exposes existing bottlenecks in the communications infrastructure and the coordination between the wireless network and its wired counterpart. While wireless systems are constantly evolving to newer generations and higher capacities, their supporting wired networks urgently require advancements in both architecture design and enabling technologies. New optical access systems specifically tailored for the unique natures of various wireless standards are investigated. This dissertation presents the design and experimental verification of high-capacity optical-wireless communication systems using advanced electrical and optical technologies. Technologies such as high level modulation and multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) to increase the spectral efficiency is approaching the Shannon limit. New frequency bands with larger bandwidth are to be explored; for example, millimetre wave (mm-wave) spectrum range (30-300 GHz), especially the license-free spectrum located in 60 GHz. Although fiber-optic systems excel in the high-bandwidth core network, as bandwidth demand increases, more and more progress has been made towards the usage of fiber in the last mile. Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) technology has been proposed as a cost-effective optical access solution to support high-speed wireless communications, especially at the mm-wave band. Signal processing and coordination are centralized at the central office (CO), making the system economical and simple to build, operate, and maintain. Moreover, RoF systems are capable of delivering radio signals with different frequencies and protocols simultaneously. Therefore, the advantage of integrated fiber wireless systems leads to the first research topic of this dissertation: multi-band multi-service RoF systems. With an emphasis on the uniformity of the RoF platform that accommodates both legacy wireless services and advanced mm-wave services, the first part of the dissertation presents two schemes - analog all-band RoF and band-mapped 60-GHz RoF - to cover distinct application scenarios. In the all-band RoF access architecture, lower RF signals, such as Wi-Fi and cellular signals, and 60-GHz signal are transmitted at their original carrier frequencies for both indoor and outdoor coverages. On the other hand, the band-mapped mm-wave RoF scheme, fully utilizing the wide 7-GHz bandwidth at 60 GHz, delivers multiple converged high-speed services only through 60-GHz wireless link, which is especially suited for in-building broadband wireless access. The experimental verification of an all-band RoF system featuring relaxed component requirement is introduced, followed by a real-time multi-service demonstration in the proposed band-mapped 60-GHz RoF system. This dissertation also presents the design, analysis, and experimental demonstration of next-generation high-capacity cellular networks to keep up with the ever-growing bandwidth demand and performance requirements. New mobile backhaul (MBH) architectures based on orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) are proposed along with a simple and low-latency clock distribution and recovery scheme. The transmission of OFDMA signals in the dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) network with flexible clock rates and DSP-free clock recovery is implemented. Also, a spectrally-efficient, low-complexity clock distribution and recovery scheme for OFDMA-based MBH in coherent ultra-dense WDM (UDWDM) system is demonstrated. Finally, mobile fronthaul (MFH) architectures based on subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) technology, which significantly reduces the requirements on both the number of wavelengths per cell site and the optical bandwidth of the optical transceivers, are systematically investigated. Additionally, two upstream schemes, tailored for the uplink (UL), are introduced to maintain low complexity, and more importantly, to achieve high spectral efficiency by wavelength sharing. Therefore, Internet-access-oriented optical-wireless systems using Wi-Fi and other emerging mm-wave technologies are developed along with the optical fronthaul and backhaul for cellular networks in this dissertation. Moreover, with the proposed techniques, heterogeneous networks can be seamlessly provided even with different services, radio nodes, and performance requirements.

Convergence of millimeter-wave and photonic interconnect systems for very-high-throughput digital communication applications

Fan, Shu-Hao 14 November 2011 (has links)
In the past, radio-frequency signals were commonly used for low-speed wireless electronic systems, and optical signals were used for multi-gigabit wired communication systems. However, as the emergence of new millimeter-wave technology introduces multi-gigabit transmission over a wireless radio-frequency channel, the borderline between radio-frequency and optical systems becomes blurred. As a result, there come ample opportunities to design and develop next-generation broadband systems to combine the advantages of these two technologies to overcome inherent limitations of various broadband end-to-end interconnect systems in signal generation, recovery, synchronization, and so on. For the transmission distances of a few centimeters to thousands of kilometers, the convergence of radio-frequency electronics and optics to build radio-over-fiber systems ushers in a new era of research for the upcoming very-high-throughput broadband services. Radio-over-fiber systems are believed to be the most promising solution to the backhaul transmission of the millimeter-wave wireless access networks, especially for the license-free, very-high-throughput 60-GHz band. Adopting radio-over-fiber systems in access or in-building networks can greatly extend the 60-GHz signal reach by using ultra-low loss optical fibers. However, such high frequency is difficult to generate in a straightforward way. In this dissertation, the novel techniques of homodyne and heterodyne optical-carrier suppressions for radio-over-fiber systems are investigated and various system architectures are designed to overcome these limitations of 60-GHz wireless access networks, bringing the popularization of multi-gigabit wireless networks to become closer to the reality. In addition to the advantages for the access networks, extremely high spectral efficiency, which is the most important parameter for long-haul networks, can be achieved by radio-over-fiber signal generation. As a result, the transmission performance of spectrally efficient radio-over-fiber signaling, including orthogonal frequency division multiplexing and orthogonal wavelength division multiplexing, is broadly and deeply investigated. On the other hand, radio-over-fiber is also used for the frequency synchronization that can resolve the performance limitation of wireless interconnect systems. A novel wireless interconnects assisted by radio-over-fiber subsystems is proposed in this dissertation. In conclusion, multiple advantageous facets of radio-over-fiber systems can be found in various levels of end-to-end interconnect systems. The rapid development of radio-over-fiber systems will quickly change the conventional appearance of modern communications.

Coherent Radio Over Fiber Links for Broadband Wireless Access Networks

Chen, Xiang January 2017 (has links)
The ever-increasing demand for high date rate is beyond what is provided by the present wireless and wired access networks. Radio-over-fiber (RoF) technology which can provide broadband wireless access has been considered the most practical and efficient solution. In recent years, RoF with coherent detection has been shown to have better performance than that with direct detection in terms of receiver sensitivity and spectral efficiency. However, RoF with coherent detection suffers from phase noise introduced from both the transmitter and local oscillator (LO) laser sources, which degrades the performance significantly. This study is focused on coherent RoF links for broadband wireless access networks. The thesis consists of four parts. In the first part, a new approach to cancel the phase noise and the unstable frequency difference introduced from the transmitter and LO laser sources based on digital signal processing (DSP) in an RoF link with coherent detection is presented. The proposed schemes rival the RoF link with direct detection in complexity while maintaining a high receiver sensitivity. In addition, a high spectral efficiency coherent RoF link with phase noise cancellation, which can detect both intensity- and phase- modulated signals carried by the same optical carrier, is studied and demonstrated. In the second part, to achieve full-duplex transmission and increase the capacity of an RoF link, radio over wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is studied. To eliminate the requirements of light sources and wavelength management at the optical network units (ONUs), which reduces the cost and eases the installation for a radio over WDM-PON system, a new approach to reuse the downstream wavelength at the ONU with coherent detection and DSP at the optical line terminal (OLT) is investigated. The performance in terms of error vector magnitude (EVM) and bit rate error (BER) is evaluated for both downlink and uplink. In the scheme, the coherent detection improves the receiver sensitivity for the uplink and compensate for the degraded data transmission performance due to the utilization of a wavelength-reused downstream optical signal. Furthermore, since the future internet traffic will become highly symmetric, a symmetrical radio over a colorless WDM passive optical network (PON) with wavelength reuse based on polarization multiplexing and coherent detection is proposed and studied. In the third part, a coherent RoF link based on optical single sideband with no optical carrier (OSSB) modulation with low-cost free-running laser sources for ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks (UDWDM-PONs) is studied. In a UDWDM-RoF-PON, the channel spacing is very small, thus a WDM filter may not be able to de-multiplex the ultra-dense channels. However, through coherent detection, the channel separation can be realized by using electrical filters at the output of the coherent receiver. In addition, to utilize the spectrum in each channel more efficiently, OSSB modulation is employed. In the proposed scheme, an RoF signal based OSSB modulation with coherent detection is experimentally demonstrated. The channel spacing can be as narrow as 3 GHz. Finally, for 5th generation wireless systems (5G), multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) is a key technology which can multiple the capacity. To seamlessly integrate MIMO into RoF links, it is required that an RoF link can transmit multiple wireless signals over a single wavelength. To enable 4 × 4 MIMO, in the fourth part, an RoF link to transmit four wireless signals with an identical microwave center frequency without using frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) over a single optical wavelength based on optical independent sideband (OISB) modulation and optical orthogonal modulation incorporating optical coherent detection and digital signal processing (DSP) is studied. To increase the spectral efficiency further, a novel high spectral efficiency (20.62 bit/s/Hz) RoF link based on coherent detection and DSP with the spectral efficiency improved by employing both intensity and phase modulation and polarization multiplexing to transmit four microwave signals over a single optical carrier is investigated.

Study of SiGe HPT for radio over fiber applications / Analyse de phototransistor bipolaire à hétérojonction SiGe/Si pour application radio-sur-fibre

Rosales, Marc 30 June 2014 (has links)
This research is focused on the study of silicon germanium based heterojunction bipolar phototransistors (SiGe HPTs) implemented in an 80GHz SiGe Bipolar process technology. It's application in a radio over fiber system for home area networks are investigated. RoF for Home area networks are envisioned to implemented with a minimal system cost. Operation at 850nm is identified as a critical parameter to achieve this goal. Low cost off the shelf optical components are readily available at this wavelength. The use of multi mode fibers (MMF) as opposed to higher cost single mode fiber (SMF) is sufficient for the bandwidth requirements in a home network environment. A monolithically integrated OE receiver chip would help in the overall reduction of the system cost by having the optical detector in the same chip with the electronic circuits. We have designed and implemented three terminal HPT (3T-HPT) structures. The two main groups of the HPT structures are: 1) HPTs with extended Base and Collector regions (xBC HPT) and 2) HPTs with extended Emitter, Base and Collector regions (xEBC HPT). Variations to improve optical coupling the though optimizations in the vertical stack and lateral size of the HPT. The measurements and characterization showed that all the structures are compatible with the process technology. The type of biasing used in the base of the HPT also influences the HPT performance. A constant current (CC) bias has higher extracted DC responsivity as compared to a constant voltage (CV) bias. The effects of the different passive base loads on the HPT responsivity are studied through simulation and measurement of fabricated circuits. The impedance presented on the base has a great influence on the HPT responsivity. The performance of an HPT as circuit component is studied using different HPT-HBT pair configurations. Tests and measurements verify that improvement in the classical transistor pair configurations are also present in the opto microwave response of the HPT-HBT pair. Finally, SiGe hpt is used in the development of a ROSA module for a radio over fiber systems for home area network

Radio over fiber for 3G cellular System

Prasad, Saurabh January 2010 (has links)
The demand for bandwidth is increasing vigorously. Thus wired network is using fiber optic telephone line instead of coaxial cable. The concept of Fiber to the Home (FTTH) is really coming into picture. Few countries like Japan, Korea etc are leading in this technology. But now the major challenge is how to provide the high speed internet connection wirelessly. Thus the change is to integrate the wireless and optical fiber communication. / Wireless Optical Communication

High-capacity short-reach optical communications

Lin, Rui January 2016 (has links)
The global traffic is experiencing an exponential growth posing severe challenges to the communication networks in terms of capacity. As a future-proof technology fiber communication is widely implemented in different network segments, which can be categorized by transmission distance as long-haul and short-reach. This thesis focuses on the short-reach communication networks including fiber access network connecting the end users to the metro/core networks that covering tens of kilometers and optical datacenter network handling the traffic within the datacenter with distance up to a few kilometers. For fiber access networks, wavelength division multiplexing passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) assign a dedicated wavelength channel to each user guaranteeing high data rate. Dense channels enlarges the user count but makes the signals vulnerable to the wavelength drift. In this regard we propose two schemes based on optical frequency comb technique to generate stable carriers for WDM-PONs. Meanwhile, radio-over-fiber techniques allows the transmission of radio signals between central offices and the cells. Millimeter wave (MMW) over fiber, on the other hand, offer high bandwidth for future high capacity mobile access. We propose and experimentally demonstrate a palm-shaped spectrum generation where the high-power central carrier can be used for upstream transmission while multiple MMW bands are capable of transmitting different downstream data simultaneously. Regarding optical datacenter networks, passive optical interconnects (POIs) have been proposed as an energy-efficient solution since only passive optical components are used for server interconnection. However, the high insertion loss may result in a scalability problem. We develop a methodology that considers various physical-layer aspects, e.g., receiver types, modulation formats, to quantify the scalability of POIs. Both theoretical analyses and experimental measurements have been performed to assess the scalability of various coupler-based POIs. /
QC 20161117

Hybrid analogue & digital access network architectures for the mobile/fixe infrastructure convergence

Frank, Florian 08 June 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In order to realize the convergence of the optical infrastructure of fixed and mobile access networks, the objective of this thesis is to study the solutions for distributing native radio carriers through typical optical access networks. The first Part describes the contexts and the main physical properties of the optical and radio access networks: from nowadays deployed Fiber To The Home (FTTH) systems, and their expected evolutions, to the current radio system Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) towards the expected requirements of modern mobile radio systems. This allows to settle the optical environment in which the Radio over Fiber(RoF)-functionalities will have to be integrated, and to know on which radio systems'figures of merits to focus on when implementing it. The second Part shows the benefit and possibilities of re-using the optical infrastructure of the fixed access networks for distributed radio systems. Then a review of the analog and digital RoF techniques is proposed, and their feasibility of integration into legacy FTTH systems is discussed. The third part deals with the computing and simulations of an analog RoF-system where the optical link is either passive or optically pre-amplified, and even boosted. The goal is to provide numerical results to the practical lab. results of the second half of the fourth part where the Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) matters. Therefore successively formal expressions, numerical results for simple 2-tone signals and more realistic UMTS signals are considered. The fourth and last part deals with the obtained practical results. These can be split into two main categories : Error Vector Magnitude (EVM)-oriented results where an Avalanche Photo-Detector (APD) is used for legacy and extended-reach PON architectures using a direction shared Semiconductor Optical Amplifier (SOA) ; and an Adjacent/Alternate Channel power Leakage Ratio (ACLR)-driven part where the focus is seton a very critical figure of merit of radio systems, especially in the downlink. The latter part turned out to be mandatory and prevailing over the initially considered EVM concerns. Hence several RoF architectures, compatible with PONs, are introduced in order to overcome the non-linearities undergone by the RoF-signals, induced by the chromatic dispersion of the PON's fiber and the laser chirp, and degrading the ACLR performances
