No. of bitstreams: 1 000450316-Texto+Completo-0.pdf: 407606 bytes, checksum: 85aef53515ae7124ae586d4ffb032c18 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013 / The bulk of this thesis is devoted to proposing a crosscut reading of two great works of Thomas Reid (1710-1796), Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man and An Inquiry into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense, aiming at positing Reid’s notion of language that underlies his theory of operations of the mind. For this, the work is divided into four main points: firstly, Reid’s understanding of language is posted, as Reid conceives and organizes it; secondly, the reidian theory of operations of mind is examined as well as its division into social and solitary operation; thirdly, the subject of the testimony is explained so as to, lastly, end it by attempting to answer the question that underlies this research, namely, in what ways Reid’s concept of language depicts the relations among world, mind, and language from Reid’s own conceptions.

How to read the Bill Reid bill

Decloedt, Jeffrey 11 1900 (has links)
This thesis argues that the First Nations and their material culture have been used as tropes in the construction of national symbols on Canadian money. The twenty dollar bill from the 2004 series of Canadian banknotes, Canadian Journeys, was the impetus for this inquiry. The art of Bill Reid is featured on this banknote. Reid is an artist who identifies, on his mother's side, with the Haida First Nations and his art takes its themes and style from the Haida crest imagery. The implications of utilizing a First Nations artist on a Canadian banknote becomes problematic when considering the antagonistic historical relationship Canada has had with the First Nations and the multiplicity of unresolved land claims. Therefore, I ask, how this Bill Reid banknote should be read. In answering this question I have divided this thesis into three parts. First, I analyze a historical precedent for this contemporary banknote. The 1870 two dollar bill is useful for it both gives an example of the use of First Nations as a trope in representing the nation and it helps expose the importance of money as a national symbol at the time when Canada was struggling to come together as a modern nation. In the next section I analyze the Bill Reid bill as both a part of a symbolic construction of nation and as a material practice which has regional or territorial implications. In the final section I argue that Bill Reid utilized the language commonly used for colonial justification to elevate his own practice. While carving out a market for his work Reid helped to reify nationally accepted histories concerning the First Nations—namely that they are culturally dead. / Arts, Faculty of / Art History, Visual Art and Theory, Department of / Graduate

Dunand, Stéphane 22 October 2011 (has links)
This work tries to defend an objectivist theory of colour by a reconciliation of two theses generally considered as incompatible: physicalism, the theory that colours are scientific properties of objects, and revelation, the thesis that the nature of a colour is revealed by an experience of this colour. Those theses are considered as incompatible because colours are presented as qualities, while science is only about quantities. After a chapter about the history of the problem, showing how we can understand the modern controversy on secondary qualities thanks to the revelation thesis, I show how to understand revelation, distinguishing it from phenomenology, and claim that a correct theory of colour must support revelation. After that, I argue that colours are transitory events, not standing properties: light produce colours, which are effects of the interaction of light with matter or, for primary light sources, events happening in them. This thesis gives a partial answer to some arguments against objectivism, notably variability arguments. Above all, this new categorization of colour reconciles the qualitative chromatic descriptions of colours with their quantitative physical descriptions, thus allowing reconciliation between the manifest and the scientific images of the world.

COMMONSENSE FACULTY PSYCHOLOGY: REIDIAN FOUNDATIONS FOR COMPUTATIONAL COGNITIVE SCIENCE (FUNCTIONALISM, INTENTIONALITY, MODULARITY, MIND, REPRESENTATION).

SMITH, JOHN-CHRISTIAN. January 1985 (has links)
This work locates the historical and conceptual foundations of cognitive science in the "commonsense" psychology of the philosopher Thomas Reid. I begin with Reid's attack on his rationalist and empiricist competitors of the 17th and 18th centuries. I then present his positive theory as a sophisticated faculty psychology appealing to innateness of mental structure. Reidian psychological faculties are equally trustworthy, causally independent mental powers, and I argue that they share nine distinct properties. This distinguishes Reidian 'intentionalism' from idealist 'representationalism,' which derive cognitive content either from the inherited structure of faculties of from the occurrent structure of sensory activity. Next, I turn to consciousness and reflection for a contemporary Reidian response to traditional phenomenology. Unlike reflection, faculties of reason and remembrance are not causally mediated by consciousness. My interpretation of Reid is that 'Humean causation' of individual faculty structure accounts only for 'natural intentionality,' while 'efficient causation' of faculty interrelations accounts for cognitive 'personal intentionality.' I then proceed by adopting a form of computational description for reconstructing this view as a computational theory of mind. I contrast functional analyses in explanations of some capacities with computational and componential analyses in explanations of other, intentional capacities, in which some processes must be taken to semantically encode and govern the roles of others. This step reconstructs the Reidian notion of intentional operations as requiring an explanation of component faculties and their representation-governed interactions. I argue that properties of faculties delimiting these interactions under Reid's theory parallel those in Fodor's (1983) essay on the "modularity of mind," although the reasons given for individual criteria are often very different. Fodor also proposes a trichotomous mental structure, but I find that a third level of "central systems" is a myth engendered by causal information theory. Such an analysis cannot capture generalizations over the internal representation of semantic roles that determines the character of faculty relations. This requirement for any computational account of cognition is precisely the motivation for the reconstructed Reidian theory. Thus, it comports more favorably with the explanatory program constitutive of a computational cognitive science.

The emphasis of this research revolves around the attempt of exercising Protestant religious practice in the Portuguese language and the resistance formed in the political-religious scope against such a right in a Roman Catholic country. The research also focuses on Kalley?s stay and activities in the Island of Madeira (1838-1846), which came to be the stage between Catholic and Protestant ideologies, culminating with the exodus and persecution of thousands of people, Kalley being the main target. Then, the sermons in Portuguese and the medical care that he accomplished in Madeira arrives in Brazil in 1855. This research also reveals specific Kalleyan methodology, how he worked independently of any church or missionary organization, even financially, unlike other missionaries at the time, although exercising the same practices of those. This examination of Protestantism informs and discloses the process that culminated with the acquisition of the civil right to registry (birth, marriage and death) by non-Catholics, citizens who did not practice the Common Religion. This paper also examines, the reaction of Kalley's Protestant speech, and reveals details of the resistance of the Catholic Church to allow freedom of worship along with the attempts to discredit the d Protestant practice and ideology. The survey also covers the discussions brought about by the Protestant mission in the Brazilian society, without forgetting to co-relate the factors going on within the Catholic Church who faced various difficulties, such as discussions about the republic, the abolitionist propaganda, foreign immigration, the patronage and the religious question, among other things, episodes that were essential to understanding the role of Robert Reid Kalley and of other missionaries who came after him.
