The It-Narrator as Moral Agent: Social Guardians in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Transatlantic Literature

Douglas, Christopher Charles 01 May 2016 (has links)
Despite shifts in marketing and ideological emphasis from the 1730s to the 1890s, the it-narrative genre (wherein objects and animals recount their own histories) remained surprisingly consistent in the nature of the social commentary it provided. In contrast to earlier studies, mainly devoted to small segments of the phenomenon in Britain or America, this study brings out the transatlantic persistence of the it-narrator’s functioning as a model of moral agency, cognizant of his/her/its obligations within a societal grid. A lens to the contemporary perception of what made it-narratives important is available in the writings of Thomas Reid, an eighteenth-century philosopher who emphasized the tangible reality of moral judgment as a force in "practical ethics." Widely known in Britain and America during this period, Reid’s paradigm, in dialogue with modern histories of material and popular culture, informs my account of how the it-narrative, while certainly responding to specific cultural trends, became ever more solidly perceived as an intertextual forum for understanding moral agency and social justice.

The topic is discussed based mainly on two of her major works, An Inquiry into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense and Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man, but without leave to present the ideas of major contemporary philosophers, interpreters of Reid as well as John Greco, James van Cleve, among others. At first, he was critical of Reid to the theory of ideas, setting up a distinction between sensation and perception. The theory of sensation and the theory of perception are treated separately, as the methodology adopted by Reid suggests. To finish up, the last chapter deals with the direct realism of Thomas Reid, where he attempts to demonstrate, through his theory of perception, human mind’s ability to relate directly with the world, without need of any other element, as the "idea" itself.

Estudo populacional do cavalo-marinho Hippocampus reidi Ginsburg, 1933 (teleostei: syngnathidae) em dois estuÃrios cearenses / Population study of the seahorse Hippocampus reid Ginsburg, 1933 (Teleostei: Syngnathidae) in two estuaries cearensis

Frederico Moreira Osorio 26 March 2008 (has links)
Seahorses are bony fishes included in the Hippocampus genus. Many aspects of their biology make them extremely vulnerable to overexploitation. The intense commerce and habitat degradation allied to their biology, contribute to the decline of their populations. Considering the level of threat to these animals around the world and their relevance as a âflagship speciesâ, studies concerning their ecology are extremely important. The purpose of this study was to determine spatial and temporal distribution of the abundance of Hippocampus reidi at the Pacoti and Malcozinhado rivers, registering also other ecological aspects of the species. Transects with an area of 100 m2 were conducted along the riverbanks. Each river was divided into two stations with increasing distances from the sea. The mean density determined was of 0,008 individuals/m2. The Pacoti River showed a significantly higher mean density when compared to the Malcozinhado River (p=0,019). There was no difference between the two stations in the Pacoti River, while in the Malcozinhado an evident difference was noticed. Both rivers showed a decreasing trend in the densities during the study, but the differences were not significant (p=0,33 and p=0,41, for Pacoti and Malcozinhado, respectively). No seazonal variation in abundance was determined. The animals from the Pacoti River were significantly higher than those from the Malcozinhado (p=0,027). Sez ratio was 1:1, and males were higher on average than the females (p=0,013). Black and brown colored seahorses were more abundant than other colors. The roots of Laguncularia racemosa were preferably chosen as anchoring substrata. The present study showed that environmental differences on the estuaries, such as mangrove areas, discharge volume and vulnerability to impacts might cause differences in the abundance of H. reidi. The adequate management of this threatened species depend strongly on a good knowledge of its ecology.

”New Money Trash,” Meet ”Dope Bitch” : An Intersectional Analysis of Identity in Such a Fun Age / Som om N-ordet betydde Nyrik : En intersektionell analys av identitet i Such a Fun Age

Zakrisson, Jessica January 2020 (has links)
This essay explores the theme of identity in Kiley Reid’s Such a Fun Age (2019). The study departs from intersectionality (Crenshaw 1989; McCall 2005) and focuses on the concepts of race (Barnshaw 2008; Keaton 2018), social class (Peckham 2010) and privilege (Bhopal 2018), which rest on a common ground of gender. Moreover, these are all elements of a person’s social identity (Eriksen 2014) and will be examined as such. Through the main characters of Emira and Alix, this essay analyzes and compares the construction of the self, how their social identities affect that process of construction, and how they relate to those social identities.

The institutionalized forms of relations with God are simply not flexible enough” : Queer theological perspectives on exclusion and activism

Magnusson, Viktoria January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this study is to explore whether activism can counteract and prevent exclusion in Christian tradition and practice. The analysis is helped by queer theologian Marcella Althaus-Reid as a primary theoretical standpoint. The study is based on Petra Carlsson's exploration of the queer nuns and activists: The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, and the movement will be elucidated and interpreted through queer theology as expressed by Althaus-Reid. The method used is a textual analysis, where the study will compare Althaus-Reid’s queer theology and Carlsson’s radical material theology; with the aim to present, analyse and discuss activism.  First, Althaus-Reid’s queer theology is systematized thematically based on the studies analysis points: the body, symbols and activism. Secondly, the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are presented and depicted through Carlsson’s interpretation of the movement. After this the queer nuns are compared to Althaus-Reid's queer theology, followed by a comparison of Althaus-Reid’s and Carlsson’s theologies. Lastly, with the help of Erik Gyll, the study discusses the situation for LGBT people in religious environments, such as church, and possible consequences of queer activism- and theology in Christian communities.  Althaus-Reid emphasises the need to do theology from different bodies/parts, especially those that have been excluded. She wants to liberate theological concepts from a heteronormative framework, which she believes limits people’s understanding of and access to God. Multiplicity is also prominent with Carlsson. She advocates for a performative viewpoint, that through adding expressions and expanding the imagery, it is also possible to create and change reality. The analysis indicates a need for theology which can embrace real life and experiences. The research shows that for those who create and engage in alternative expressions or activism, such participation enables access to symbols and spaces from which they were previously excluded. Therefore, it is also reasonable to conclude that it is a relevant and fruitful approach as long as people are still excluded from Christian communities, and the church is not a safe place for everyone.
