Not Ideas About the Thing But the Thing Itself: Thomas Reid's Epistemology in the Light of Artistotle's "De Anima"

DeMoor, Michael 09 1900 (has links)
This thesis argues that, in spite of his explicit denunciation of Aristotle's theory of perception and thought, Thomas Reid's own theory of perception marks a return to the central themes of Aristotle's theory. It is argued, first, that Aristotle's 'De Anima' presents an account of sensation and thought in which the functions of the object of perception play the determining role with respect to the structure, order and intelligibility of the act of perception. Thomas Aquinas' and Descartes' transformation of Aristotle's account are then discussed, showing how the "apparatus" of Aristotle's theory remains while the ground of order and intelligibility is shifted from the functions of the object of perception to those of the perceiver as subject. The theories of the British empiricists are then shown to be continuous with this transformation of Aristotle's thought. Finally, it is argued that Reid returns to an objectivism by way of his rejection of the subjectivistic transformation wrought by Descartes et al. It is argued that this rejection is not---as Reid himself believes---a rejection of the crucial aspects of Aristotle's theory, but instead constitutes a return to its primary themes and theses.

John Forbes White and George Reid : artists and patrons in north-east Scotland 1860-1920

Melville, Jennifer January 2001 (has links)
John Forbes White's contribution to the history of Art in Scotland was, for the first seventy years after his death, mentioned only in passing by the main writers on Scottish art of the day. However, two of his daughters, Ina Mary Harrower and Dorothea Fyfe, both wrote articles on aspects of their father's collecting: Ina publishing "Private Picture Galleries, The Collection of John Forbes White" in Goodwords in 1896 (pp 813-819), John Forbes White (Edinburgh) in 1918 and in 1927, "Jozef lsraels and his Aberdeen Friend" for the Aberdeen University Review (pp 108-122). A noted art historian, Ina reflected her father's taste and collecting interests in her own writings, as with, for example, "Studies of Fruit by Courbet" Apollo (Vol. L No 296 1949 pp 95-98). Dorothea, with her co-author C.S. Minto, published John Forbes White, Miller, Collector, Photographer 1831-1904 (Edinburgh 1970). The only other writers who have examined White's contribution to art in any detail were Charles Carter, who as curator of Aberdeen Art Gallery, covered art and patronage in the North-East of Scotland in numerous articles and outlined White's contribution in "Art Patronage in Scotland: John Forbes White" published in the Scottish Art Review,(Vol VI, no 2, 1957, pp. 27-30). Frances Fowle, on completion of her PhD on Alexander Reid, also discussed White's tastes in "The Hague School and the Scots, A Taste for Dutch Pictures" (Apollo August 1991 pp 108-111). George Reid was still less favoured by critics after his death. With J.L. Caw championing James Guthrie and William MacTaggart, the innovative and influential aspects of Reid's art were obscured, reduced and even sometimes credited to others. W.D. McKay in The Scottish School of Painting (London 1906) had played down Reid's part in the introduction of Realism into Scotland and Agnes McKay in her monograph on Arthur Melville (Lee on Sea, 1951) went furthest of all in portraying Reid as the enemy of a younger, more innovative group of artists, who included the subject of her book. It was to be another thirty years before Dun can Macmillan would examine Reid, in Scottish Art 1460-1990 (Mainstream, 1990) as an important landscape painter, rather than, as had been the case before, as a reactionary president of the Royal Scottish Academy and an extremely dull, if talented, portrait painter. One year later John Morrison, having completed his PhD Rural Nostalgia: Painting in XIX Scotland c.1860-1880 (St Andrews 1989) wrote of Reid's important European contacts and of the vital relationship between White and Reid in "Sir George Reid in Holland, his work with G.A. Mollinger and Jozef Israels" (Jong Holland 1991 No 4 pp 10-19). Both the assets and the faults of Alexander Macdonald's collecting were examined by Charles Carter in "Alexander Macdonald 1837-1884 - Aberdeen Art Collector" (Scottish Art Review, Vol V, no 3, 1955, pp. 23-28) and again by Francina Irwin in an exhibition catalogue entitled Alexander Macdonald: From Mason to Maecenas in 1985. My main source of material has come from the uncatalogued archive of correspondence between George Reid, John Forbes White, Jozef Israels, George Paul Chalmers, David Artz, Gerrit Mollinger, Samuel Smiles and others, most of which is housed in Aberdeen Art Gallery. Reid's unpublished autobiography, transcribed by his wife Mia, (in the same archive) was also of great use, as was an unpublished but almost complete catalogue raisonne of Reid's work, compiled, probably by Percy Bate or Harry Townend c.1912. I have also made extensive use of the papers of James Pittendrigh Macgillivray which are held by The National Library of Scotland. The descendants of John Forbes White made the works and letters in their possession freely available to me. These included the correspondence between John Forbes White and William Stott of Oldham which is cited in Chapter 6. Elements of this thesis, and particularly sections 2,3, & 4 of Chapter 4, appeared in a revised form in "Art and Patronage in Aberdeen 1860-1920", a paper that I delivered at the Scottish Society of Art History's conference on Patronage, and which was published in The Journal of the Scottish Society for Art Historians (Volume 3 1998 pp 16-24). The sixth section of Chapter 5 appeared in a revised form, in An Album of Photographs compiled by Sir John Everett Millais PRA published in Studies in Photography (Edinburgh, 1997). The discussion of the influence of Ancient Greece and Classicism in the eighth section of Chapter 7 was included in a paper entitled John Forbes White, The Classical Tradition and Ideals In Art given at the conference on "The Role of Collections In The Scottish Cultural Tradition", which was held at Aberdeen University in 1998. The third section of Chapter 7 appeared in a revised form in Robert Brough (Aberdeen Art Gallery, 1995). Appendix A contains relevant excerpts from letters and text, on which much of my research was based whilst Appendix B lists the works of art owned by John Forbes White.

PERSON RE-IDENTIFICATION & VIDEO-BASED HEART RATE ESTIMATION

Dahjung Chung (7030574) 13 August 2019 (has links)

Estimation of physiological vital signs such as the Heart Rate (HR) has attracted a lot of attention due to the increase interest in health monitoring. The most common HR estimation methods such as Photoplethysmography(PPG) require the physical contact with the subject and limit the movement of the subject. Video-based HR estimation, known as videoplethysmography (VHR), uses image/video processing techniques to estimate remotely the human HR. Even though various VHR methods have been proposed over the past 5 years, there are still challenging problems such as diverse skin tone and motion artifacts. In this thesis we present a VHR method using temporal difference filtering and small variation amplification based on the assumption that HR is the small color variations of skin, i.e. micro blushing. This method is evaluated and compared with the two previous VHR methods. Additionally, we propose the use of spatial pruning for an alternative of skin detection and homomorphic filtering for the motion artifact compensation.

Intelligent video surveillance system is a crucial tool for public safety. One of the goals is to extract meaningful information efficiently from the large volume of surveillance videos. Person re-identification (ReID) is a fundamental task associated with intelligent video surveillance system. For example, ReID can be used to identity the person of interest to help law enforcement when they re-appear in the different cameras at different time. ReID can be formally defined as establishing the correspondence between images of a person taken from different cameras. Even though ReID has been intensively studied over the past years, it is still an active research area due to various challenges such as illumination variations, occlusions, view point changes and the lack of data. In this thesis we propose a weighted two stream train- ing objective function which combines the Siamese cost of the spatial and temporal streams with the objective of predicting a person’s identity. Additionally, we present a camera-aware image-to-image translation method using similarity preserving Star- GAN (SP-StarGAN) as the data augmentation for ReID. We evaluate our proposed methods on the publicly available datasets and demonstrate the efficacy of our methods.

For this, the work is divided into four main points: firstly, Reid s understanding of language is posted, as Reid conceives and organizes it; secondly, the reidian theory of operations of mind is examined as well as its division into social and solitary operation; thirdly, the subject of the testimony is explained so as to, lastly, end it by attempting to answer the question that underlies this research, namely, in what ways Reid s concept of language depicts the relations among world, mind, and language from Reid s own conceptions.

Thus, appear quite subtle conception of Thomas Reid about "Problem of Induction", which is primarily discussed in the Inquiry, however, they appear quite important approaches and crucial also in Essays. It should not be forgotten that while the reidiana theory of induction is emerging, a debate and an analysis will be made by Reid in his great contemporary Hume. The importance of Hume's inclusion is indisputable because it has been Reid's time, and also by the contours of his thought about inductive reasoning and how Reid understands and, in a way, goes further. Therefore, some chapters will work with the problem of induction in the two respective works of Reid, HMI and EIP. It will also be an analysis of what was written about the induction and other peripheral issues in Reid, the other researchers. What conclusions Reid comes in and another work, and realize what critics synthesized his thinking in this respect, namely with regard to induction. / O objetivo do presente trabalho ? apresentar uma poss?vel teoria reidiana para uma justifica??o ao problema da indu??o a partir de seus dois grandes escritos, a saber, o ?An Inquiry into the Human Mind on the Principles of Common Sense? de 1764 e o ?Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Men? de 1785.

Impossibly indecent God? : pursuing questions of the Biblical God in the Church of Scotland through churchgoers' and Marcella Althaus-Reid's theological ideas, juxtaposed with fragments of Jacques Derrida's philosophy

Brown, Susan Victoria January 2012 (has links)
Marcella Althaus-Reid was a theologian who dared to imagine differently, a thinker whose inventive style brought striking originality to her writings on sexuality and gender, people and God. Her work is remembered most noticeably in theological academia for her conceptual phrase, ‘Indecent Theology’. In this thesis about questions of God, the innovative elements of Marcella’s literary corpus are developed in new ways by placing her academic theories alongside a practical research study undertaken in the alternative milieu of Church of Scotland congregations in Edinburgh. This primary material, which has been analysed through interview and focus group transcripts, together with questionnaire responses, brings revealing insights to frame the emerging tensions between churchgoers and Marcella across the dimensions of its four chapters. In each, the following themes are developed: the ambiguities surrounding questions of asking who God might be; the considerations involved in recognising God’s relationship with the Bible; the exploration of the extent to which sexuality and gender may influence God concepts; and the recognition of the role people play in evaluating their understandings of God in Christianity. Arranged in a rhythmical structure throughout, every chapter is first prefaced by a media-based report which contextualises relevant themes in a contemporary idiom, and is later concluded by a deconstructive postscript that, in fragmentary ways, invokes some critical concepts in the work of Jacques Derrida germane to the particular questions of God pursued in each.

Davoine-Tousignant, Gabrielle 09 1900 (has links) (PDF)

Lemaire, Alexandre 04 1900 (has links) (PDF)
