Scholarly Re-vision: Using Burkean Frames as a Heuristic for Iterative Narrative Reflection and Practice

abstract: This dissertation develops a heuristic—one I call the iterative narrative reflection framework—for rhetorically engaged, data-driven teacherly theory building using Kenneth Burke’s frames of acceptance and rejection. Teacher-scholars regularly develop curricula and lesson plans informed by theory and prior experience, but the daily practice of teaching and learning with students rarely plays out as expected. In many cases, institutional constraints and the unpredictable lives of students interact with teachers’ plans in surprising and sometimes confounding ways. Teachers typically make sense of such challenges by constructing post-hoc narratives about what happened and why, attributing motives and agencies to other participants in ways that suggest how to respond, move forward, and get back on track. Whether such narratives are part of a deliberate practice of reflection or an informal and largely unnoticed mental process, they are rarely thought of as constructed accounts and therefore as rhetorical acts that can be subjected to serious review, criticism, and revision. Yet these stories are shaped by familiar genre conventions that influence interpretations of events and motives in ways that may or may not serve well as teachers consider how best to respond to unfolding events. Using the iterative narrative reflection framework to guide my analysis of my own teacherly narratives through multiple layers of reflection and criticism, I demonstrate across the dissertation’s three cases how such deliberate, methodical analysis can reveal tacit assumptions and additional interpretive possibilities. Supporting reflection on time spent while studying

During the Covid-19 pandemic, students has been forced to spend more time studying alone at home, which in some cases has led to increased stress and anxiety. This thesis explores qualities in Slow, Calm and Persuasive technology, together with temporal concepts in theory and qualities derived from ideation, with the aim to explore which qualities should be considered while designing for supporting self-reflection on time spent while studying. The process in this thesis is explorative, moving from ideation, to digital and physical prototypes, with the authors reflections and experiences driving the process forward and experience sessions with participants that were used to ground the experience through their reflections and new perspectives. Through evaluating the reflections and experiences with tools and design principles, the work ends up with the four qualities flow, tension, unfolding and balance as suggestions to work with in future research on designing for supporting self-reflection on time spent while studying.

The Act of Reading as a Transformative Experience: Emotions and Reflective Moral Transformation in Literature

This thesis emphasizes the significance of readers’ emotional engagement with characters in the process of reading novels which, in turn, plays a critical role in the reflective moral transformation of the reader. It approaches the analysis of the relationship between emotions, literature and ethics from the perspective of the perceptual theory of emotions. My claim is that our imaginative engagements with narrative fictions, and particularly realist novels, by triggering a critical reflection process through the arousal of our emotions, might prove to be a morally transformative experience. Reflective moral transformation is defined as a deepening of one’s moral understanding that often involves a shift in one’s perspective that comes about as a result of a critical reflection of one’s existing moral beliefs. As such, it entails a willingness to scrutinize one’s moral beliefs and to improve one’s moral understanding. I put forward here a model that will satisfactorily explain how engagement with realist novels can serve to morally transform ourselves.

Far-Infrared Observations of AFGL 2136: Simple Dust Toroid Models

We report on high angular resolution observations of AFGL 2136 at 50 and 100 μm from NASA's Kuiper Airborne Observatory. Our data consist of diffraction-limited scans in two orthogonal directions as well as photometry. The far-infrared (FIR) emission is very compact with an unresolved core and also exhibits low surface brightness wings that extend out to a radius of order 70″ at 100 μm. We have attempted to fit our observations and the photometry and size data at other wavelengths with simple, dust envelope models in order to place limits on the quantity and distribution of dust around AFGL 2136. Spherically symmetric models cannot fit the data, but we show that a simple approximation to a toroidal dust distribution can fit the energy distribution and size data rather well. The successful models imply a density gradient in the cloud of order ρ ∝ r-1.5 and optical depth at 100 μm of order unity.

Nurses' Reflection, Compassion Fatigue, and Work Burnout - A Correlational Analysis

Compassion fatigue and work-related burnout are harmful reactions to patient situations and work environments that negatively affect nurses' well-being and ability to provide safe, effective patient care. However, research is needed to understand how reflection as a self-care response to patient situations is related to nurses' development of work burnout, compassion fatigue, and secondary traumatic stress, a type of compassion fatigue. The purpose of this correlational, cross-sectional quantitative study was to determine the relationship between hospital-based acute care nurses' levels of reflection and their levels of compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and work burnout. The study was based on Hentz and Lauterbach's model for reflective practice and Kearney, Weininger, Vachon, Harrison, and Mount's self-awareness-based model of self-care. Internet-based surveys consisting of demographic items, the Groningen Reflective Ability Scale, and the Compassion Fatigue-Short Scale were distributed to a randomly selected sample of 2,000 registered nurses in the southeastern United States. Spearman correlation, Pearson correlation, and binary linear regression analyses revealed no significant relationship between the variable of reflection and the variables of compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and work burnout among hospital-based acute care nurses. Incidental findings revealed significant positive correlations among compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and work burnout. The study findings can be used to effect positive social change and inform future research within the nursing profession by highlighting reflective nursing practice and providing awareness of the positive relationships among compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, and work burnout in nurses.

Increasing Student Engagement and Student Voice Through Collaborative Reflection

abstract: In this study, the current literature regarding student engagement and student voice were reviewed to explore the connection between these two classroom elements. Currently, frequently incorporating student voice in order to increase student engagement most commonly takes place at the high school and university levels. Thus, utilizing Finn’s (1989) participation-identification theory, this study set out to implement a practical design intervention in an elementary classroom to increase student engagement through the incorporation of student voice. Using Design-Based Research, I implemented a collaborative reflection process which allowed students, teacher/researcher, and co-educators to provide feedback on classroom task and participant structures. The feedback was then considered for further iterations of the task and participant structures. This was a pilot study of the collaborative reflection process and was implemented in a fourth-grade math classroom with 26 participants. Along with participating in the collaborative reflection process, the student participants also took a 26 question Learner Empowerment Measure to survey their feelings of identity with the classroom before and after the design intervention. After analyzing audio data gathered during the classroom tasks, as well as student feedback, it was found that student participation did increase due to the design intervention. However, there was no measurable difference in students’ feelings of identity with the classroom due to the collaborative reflection process. Future studies should consider implementing the collaborative reflection process in multiple classrooms across diverse activities during the school year. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Learning, Literacies and Technologies 2019

Quelle que soit la nature des ondes utilisées et des milieux traversés, le contrôle de la propagation ondes est d'un intérêt majeur pour de nombreuses applications. D'une part, la complexité du milieu peut être exploitée en exerçant un contrôle cohérent du front d’onde incident. D'autre part, on peut forcer une onde à se propager suivant un chemin désiré en concevant soi-même le milieu de propagation. Dans cette thèse, nous étudions ces deux aspects à partir d'expériences ultrasons-laser mettant en jeu la propagation d'ondes de Lamb dans des plaques.La propagation des ondes à travers un milieu diffusant est tout d’abord étudiée à partir de sa matrice de diffusion. Une prédiction théorique importante est l’existence de canaux de propagation totalement ouverts ou fermés. Une première partie de ces travaux consiste à démontrer expérimentalement ce résultat en mettant en évidence la possibilité de transmettre totalement une onde à travers un milieu désordonné. Dans un second temps, la mesure d’une matrice des temps de vol nous permet d’étudier ces canaux dans le domaine temporel. Ceux-ci donnent lieu à des paquets d’onde dont la cohérence spatiale et temporelle est conservée tout au long de leur propagation dans le milieu.Le second volet de cette thèse consiste à tirer profit des phénomènes de réflexion et réfraction négative afin de contrôler la propagation des ondes de Lamb. D’une part, la réflexion négative est mise à profit pour réaliser une conjugaison de phase passive des ondes de Lamb. D’autre part, le concept des milieux complémentaires est exploré afin d’annuler la diffraction des ondes et ainsi camoufler certaines zones du milieu de propagation. / Whatever their nature or the propagation medium, controlling the propagation of waves is of fundamental interest for many applications. On the one hand, one can tame wave-fields in order to take advantage of the complexity of the medium. On the other hand, one can force waves along desired paths through a careful design of manmade materials. In this thesis, we study those two aspects on the basis of laser-ultrasonic experiments involving the propagation of Lamb waves in elastic plates.The control of wave propagation through complex systems is first investigated by means of the scattering matrix approach. In diffusive media, theorists have demonstrated the existence of propagation channels either closed or open through which the wave can travel. The first part of this work present a direct experimental evidence of this result as well as the ability to fully transmit a wave through a disordered medium. In a second part, the measurement of the time-delay matrix allows the study of such channels in the time domain. They are shown to give rise to particle-like wave packets that remain focused in time and space throughout their trajectory in the medium.The second part of this thesis consists in studying the concepts of negative reflection and refraction for the manipulation of Lamb wave propagation. On the one hand, negative reflection is taken advantage of to perform a passive phase conjugation of Lamb waves. On the other hand, the notion of complementary media is investigated in order to cancel the diffraction of waves and cloak some areas of the plate.

Evaluating the Impact of Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy on Social Functioning in Schizophrenia

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Objective: Social functioning encompasses interactions with people across situations of varying complexity. Given the frequency of observed social impairments in individuals with schizophrenia, there is a need to identify mechanisms that influence social functioning impairments. One proposed mechanism is metacognition, a mental process that enables the integration and interpretation of mental states and experiences. Impaired metacognition can inhibit one’s ability to engage and navigate through our social world. In individuals with schizophrenia, both social functioning and metacognitive deficits are profound. This study examined three hypotheses. Following Metacognitive Reflection and Insight Therapy (MERIT), (1) individuals will show improvements in social functioning; (2) individuals will show improvements in metacognitive abilities; and (3) improvements in social functioning will be associated with improved metacognitive abilities. Method: Using secondary data from a MERIT therapy feasibility study, data collected from the active condition groups (e.g., individuals with schizophrenia, n =16) at pre-and post-assessment were analyzed using paired samples t-tests for primary outcomes and hierarchical linear regressions to assess metacognition as an underlying mechanism of change. Results: Paired samples t-tests found no significant improvement in social functioning or metacognition. In contrast to the hypothesis, metacognitive abilities significantly declined. When subscales were examined, two subscales (self-reflectivity and awareness of others) significantly decreased. The post-hoc analysis found significant improvements in overall symptoms and disorganization. Lastly, metacognition did not significantly predict post-intervention social functioning. Conclusions: Measurement modality and the length of intervention may help explain the null findings observed in this study. The improvement in overall and disorganized symptoms could indicate that symptom reductions precede social functioning and metacognition changes. Given that the results from this trial were not aligned with previous studies, further research is needed to determine the effectiveness of MERIT on social functioning and metacognition in schizophrenia.

Reprocessing of Marine Reflection Seismic Data from Skåne, Sweden / Omprocessering av data från marin reflektionsseismik i Skåne, Sverige

During 1979, an oil prospecting project was initiated in the south of Sweden, outside the coast of the municipality of Skåne. No drilling program was initiated, and the project was put on ice. However, with the oil prices of today and the interest in carbon dioxide storage, the area could once again be interesting. In this thesis, 3 seismic lines have been reprocessed with new software, Claritas, in an attempt to obtain information of the area. The thesis is also thought of as an easy to read tutorial as to how oil prospecting works. The result of the reprocessing showed that the new software could reduce multiples and high- and low frequency noise with an fx-decon filter. / Under 1979 inleddes ett projekt med oljeprospektering utanför Skånes kust i södra Sverige. Inget borrprogram initierades och projektet lades ned. Med dagens oljebrist och intresset för koldioxidförvaring så skulle området än en gång kunna vara intressant. I detta examensarbete har därför 3 seismiklinjer omprocesserats med ny programvara, Claritas, i ett försök att förbättra vår bild av detta område. Examensarbetet är även tänkt att fungera som en inledande litteratur om hur oljeprospektering fungerar. Resultatet av omprocesseringen av seismikdatat visade att man med den nya programvaran kunde reducera multipler och hög- och lågfrekvent brus med ett fx-decon filter.
