Teachers' Mathematical Meanings: Decisions for Teaching Geometric Reflections and Orientation of FiguresNielsen, Porter Peterson 29 July 2020 (has links)
Teachers' instructional decisions are important for students' mathematics learning as they determine the learning opportunities for all students. This study examines teachers' decisions about the activities and tasks they choose for students' mathematics learning, the ordering and connecting of mathematics topics, and the mathematics within curricula not to cover. These decisions are referred to as curricular decisions. I also identify teachers' mathematical schemes, referred to as mathematical meanings, in relation to geometric reflections and orientation of figures and examine teachers' reasoning with their mathematical meanings as they make these curricular decisions. Additionally, based on the results of this study I identify several productive and unproductive mathematical meanings in relation to geometric reflections and orientation of figures. Describing productive mathematical meanings as providing coherence to student mathematical understanding and preparing students for future mathematics learning (Thompson, 2016). These findings can be used to better understand why teachers make the curricular decisions they do as well as help teachers identify whether or not their mathematical meanings are productive in an effort to foster productive mathematical meanings for students.

Reflections on the Impact of a Library-based Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) ServiceWallace, Rick L., Cook, Nakia J., Clamon, Travis 15 May 2011 (has links)
Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine if a librarybased personal digital assistant (PDA) service is a significant factor in the clinical use of PDAs at an academic medical center. Methods: Health sciences students, faculty, staff, and residents at an academic medical center were the participants. The library has serviced several thousand PDAs. This population was used as the basis for the study group. The study design is a cross-sectional study using survey methodology. The analysis was done based on age, college affiliation, and gender, and answered questions such as frequency of PDA use, usefulness of library’s PDA service, and usefulness of programs the library installed on users’ PDAs. Results: One hundred and eight people responded. Seventy-five percent of the respondents would still be PDA users, even if the library did not assist or promote the service. Almost 90% were daily PDA users. Seventy-five percent stated that they would not feel confident that they could install the software without the library’s help. Conclusions: The survey results reenforced the library’s feeling that the service fills a crucial need in the community it serves. The survey also provided information on the databases it buys, which gives the library information for future collection development.

Sundström, Johan January 2023 (has links)
It is well-known that Kafka had a great fascination with the possibilities and transience of the physical body, as evidenced in his various literary works. Using the theory of "the uncanny", The essay interprets and investigates how and what Kafka writes about others' bodies, as well as his own. It turns out that women's appearances are observed and commented on by Kafka to a greater extent than men. Primarily, these descriptions take on grotesque and absurd characteristics, sometimes with an element of fascination. Regarding Kafka's own body, it primarily evokes a sense of disgust in what the author sees. Linked to the essay's theory of "the uncanny”, it becomes evident throughout (clearly, in) his observations that Kafka experiences a feeling of the aforementioned "uncanny". As a conclusion to the essay, the potential of diaries used in an educational context (the classroom) is highlighted, as well as how students can benefit from reading and working with diaries to acquire skills and abilities.

It is for you that I have the courage to fight : Mothers' experience of living with incurable cancerFlink, Matilda, Johansson Hadzic, Johanna January 2022 (has links)
Background: Almost half of those affected by cancer in Sweden are women, and some of these women are mothers who have been diagnosed with incurable cancer. When a patient suffers from incurable cancer, palliative care becomes central. The four cornerstones, together with the person-centered model of the 6 S's, will form the basis of how care will be designed. Aim: The purpose of the thesis was to shed light on mothers' experience of living with incurable cancer. Method: A qualitative method where the data collection consisted of seven blogs. An analysis of narratives was used according to Dahlborg's model. Findings: The results were identified by three main categories; The feeling of powerlessness, Life's inevitable change and Living in the moment, along with six subcategories. Conclusion: Incurable cancer caused both physical and psychological suffering for the mothers and they experienced limitations in their role as mothers. This meant that the existential thoughts and feelings became unavoidable and difficult to handle. At the same time, the results showed that the mothers gained vitality through the ability to live in the present and reflect on what was important and valuable to them. Nurses need to further develop their competence in person-centred palliative care in order to care for and respond to this patient group in the best possible way.

Heated Supersonic Jet Characteristics From Far-field Acoustical MeasurementsChristian, Matthew Austin 21 November 2023 (has links) (PDF)
In the field of supersonic jet noise, measurements of full-scale afterburning jet engines are infrequent and provide unique opportunities to better understand jet noise phenomena. This thesis represents a phenomenological jet noise analysis using far-field noise data collected from a T-7A-installed GE F404-103 turbofan engine. One issue with the far-field acoustic data from the T-7A was the effects of ground reflections present in the spectra generated from the measured waveforms. A previously developed ground reflection model was implemented into the data to account for this interference. This work represents the first time this model has been implemented in data collected from a full-scale aircraft. Spectra and spatiospectral maps are used to show that, while imperfect, this model represents a step in the right direction for accounting for ground reflections. From the ground reflection-corrected data, sound power values were calculated at varying engine powers. These values were compared against mechanical power values calculated using provided engine parameters at the corresponding engine conditions. It is shown that the observed increase in sound power with mechanical power at supersonic engine conditions follows classical jet noise theory, while the increase between transonic engine conditions is much greater than predicted by classical jet noise theory. This divergence is currently unexplained. Finally, far-field noise directivity measured from the T-7A is connected back to both physics-based and empirically derived definitions of the convective Mach number, a dimensionless parameter used to describe the velocities of coherent structures in the turbulent mixing layer of a jet. For supersonic jets, where Mach wave radiation is the dominant noise source, the convective Mach number should be useful for predicting peak directivity angles. The evaluated definitions show that the convective Mach number associated with Kelvin-Helmholtz instability waves best predicts the peak directivity of the T-7A.

Ripples : The Interplay of Surface and PerceptionLu, Chi Jung January 2024 (has links)
This degree project, “Ripples,” explores the dynamic interplay of reflections in urban environments, focusing on how natural elements like puddles can transform the spatial experience and perception within these settings. Situated within the field of spatial design, this project emphasizes the potential of reflective surfaces to enrich urban spaces, making them more engaging and adaptable to environmental changes. The importance of “Ripples” lies in its ability to enhance urban livability and ecological awareness by integrating artfully designed reflective elements into everyday spaces. This approach addresses contemporary challenges such as increased rainfall and climate change, demonstrating how design can play a crucial role in urban sustainability and resilience. The project was conducted through a series of experiments and installations in diverse settings, including the Telefonplan tunnel and a controlled exhibition space at Konstfack. Using phenomenological methods alongside practical tools such as walking analyses and sensory observations, the project explored the effects of reflections caused by different materials and lighting conditions. Artistic interpretations through watercolour painting were also employed to conceptualize reflections abstractly, further enriching the study. Conclusions from “Ripples” suggest that thoughtful design interventions can significantly alter public engagement and enhance spatial perception, making everyday environments not only more aesthetically pleasing but also more responsive to human emotions and environmental factors. The project’s implications extend into future design practices, advocating for the integration of reflective surfaces in urban planning to foster environments that are not only functional but also inspirational, paving the way for a reflective future in urban design.

The motivation of this dissertation is to propose an efficient approach for the prediction of the electromagnetic field scattered from a set of buildings in urban area. Unlike the ray tracing and ray lanching methods where the reflection mechanics are treated building by building, the proposed approach uses the radar cross section (RCS) as a global quantity to describe the reflection by a set of buildings and to predict the scattered field at the receiver position. An analytical expression is obtained to model building scattering using the vector form of Kirchhoff-Huygens integral and the geometrical optics (GO) method, and the multiple reflections between building facades are taken into account. The model is applied on various buildings configurations and accurate results are obtained in the predominant scattering directions with simulation times inferior to five seconds for the most complex scenarios. Since our approach is compatible to the classical methods based on ray techniques or the radiation of surface currents, it can be useful to accelerate the existing softwares. The second part of this thesis is devoted to the study of the influence of building facade irregularities such as balconies. As the complexity of these facades is incompatible with the use of asymptotic methods, the rigorous method of moments (MoM) has been chosen to determine the scattered field from these façades. The field distribution in the near zone of the facades as well as the radiation patterns in the far zone have been considered. It appears that single and second order reflections are the main scattering mechanisms for these facades. We also show that from a certain distance from the facade, the corrugated facade can be used as a simplified equivalent model for the facade with balconies. This thesis is supported by the French ANR project OP2H
