Teacher Mindfulness in the Middle School Classroom: Reliability and Validity of a New Scale

Rickert, Nicolette Paige 26 July 2016 (has links)
Despite significant growth in research examining the effects of mindfulness interventions on teachers (Roeser, 2014), studies have mainly relied on self-reports of teacher mindfulness and have not examined observable behavioral manifestations of teacher mindfulness in the classroom. Due to possible biases in self-report measures (Dotterer & Lowe, 2011), as well as the need for a greater range of assessments of the effects of mindfulness trainings on teachers, the current study sought to create a new measure of teacher mindfulness in the classroom from three sources of information: teacher self-reports of their own behavior in the classroom, student perceptions of their teachers' behavior, and third-person observations of teacher behavior in the classroom. Another aim of this study was to demonstrate the concurrent validity of these new measures with teacher dispositional mindfulness and job stress. It was hypothesized that the newly created measures of teacher mindfulness in the classroom would be internally reliable, share modest inter-correlations across data sources, and would significantly correlate with hypothesized antecedents such as teachers' dispositional mindfulness and ratings of job stress. CFA, correlation, and regression analyses found good internal consistencies for each informant source of teacher calmness, clarity, and kindness; partial support for the convergent validity of each informant source; and partial concurrent validity only for teacher reports of mindfulness in the classroom with teachers' dispositional mindfulness and job stress. Evidence of method effects was suggested from these analyses. The future use, re-configuration, and implications of this suite of measures are discussed.

Video-enhanced Reflection in Iran: Impacts of Gender and Experience

Kavoshian, Saeedeh, Ketabi, Saeed, Tavakoli, Mansoor, Köhler, Thomas January 2017 (has links)
The present study aimed at investigating the video-enhanced reflections of Iranian EFL teachers. It also made an attempt to cast light on the differences between male and female teachers’ video-enhanced self-reflections of their own teaching process. Moreover, the role of experience in changing their video-enhanced reflection was explored. Applying instruments like video-recording, reflection checklists and semi-structured interviews, this study implemented a mixed-method approach with a triangulation design focusing on both quantitative and qualitative data. The findings of the study demonstrate that the video-enhanced reflections of Iranian EFL teachers mostly pivot around issues consisting of innovative teaching strategies, classroom management, learners’ characteristics, classroom interactions, teacher talk, organization of the lessons, technology resources and visual aids. Results also show that the above-mentioned reflections are both experience and gender-sensitive.

The role of educators in facilitating reflective learning in students

Naicker, Kannagi 14 January 2015 (has links)
Over the last 20 years the nursing profession has widely accepted reflective practices and reflective learning as effective measures to help students provide care in a frequently changing context. The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the role of nurse educators in the facilitation of reflective learning in students. The objectives were to explore the reflective teaching practices of nurse educators, describe the learning activities that could promote reflective learning in student nurses and to determine whether the learning environment is conducive to promote reflective teaching and learning. A quantitative, explorative, descriptive study was conducted in nursing education institutions in Gauteng. A total of 121 nurse educators completed a structured questionnaire. The findings revealed that, although nurse educators agree with the importance of reflective practices in the teaching and learning environment they do not necessarily place emphasis on developing their own reflective practices. Reflective learning was not identified as a formal learning approach in the programmes the nurse educators facilitated but the educators did attempt to include reflection in the teaching and learning activities planned. Not enough emphasis is placed on the creation of a teaching and learning environment that will enhance reflection in a non-threatening context. The deeper understanding of reflective learning comes with continued personal reflective practices. Nurse educators should be taught how to facilitate reflective learning activities and how to create an environment conducive to reflection. Through reflective teaching practices students could be supported in developing into critical thinkers hence reflective learning should be a formal teaching and learning approach in nursing curricula / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

Barely There Tales: A Phenomenological Study of Stories Told by Pre-service Teachers

Ybos, Cynthia 17 December 2010 (has links)
Teacher stories were once relegated to informal gatherings but more recently this aspect of teacher development is being carefully studied in more formalized settings because it is believed to be an important part of teacher development. New ways are being sought to use various aspects of storytelling to help pre-service teachers develop important teaching skills through reflection on experience, dialogue journals, case studies and autobiography. Despite these efforts at the university level, it is especially difficult for pre-service teachers to integrate and apply theories from their methods courses to actual classroom practice. Less effort has been focused on storytelling processes that may occur outside these formal approaches. This study, therefore, looked at how pre-service teachers used stories told in an informal setting to process aspects of learning to teach. This study revealed that pre-service teachers engage in story telling for reasons and in ways that are different from teacher educator intents. Using interviews and private dialogues, patterns of when, how and why six pre-service teachers used oral stories emerged that illuminate challenges to using personal and appropriated stories in coursework. The findings of this study include how oral storytelling is used by pre-service teachers to process emotion and demonstrate specific identities and personal characteristics.

A multi-site case study of a professional learning community model: the impact of learning team meetings on teacher practice and student achievement from the perspective of teachers and instructional leaders

Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the implementation of a structured professional learning community model referred to as Learning Team Meetings (LTMs) on teacher practice and student achievement from the perspective of teachers and instructional leaders at high-need schools. To accomplish this purpose, a multi-site case study was conducted at three school sites (an elementary, middle, and high school) all within the same region of one of the largest urban school districts in South Florida. Qualitative research methods, including one-on-one observations, interviews, focus groups, and review of documents were utilized to analyze, contrast, and compare perceptions, beliefs, and assumptions of the participants in the study. The participants included teachers, principals, assistant principals, instructional coaches, and Learning Team Facilitators (LTFs). A total of 20 participants were involved in the study. The conceptual framework for this study is rooted in the guiding principles of organizational learning and effective professional development practices. Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) offer formal structures to provide teachers with learning enriched, ongoing, job-embedded staff development (Hord & Sommers, 2008). This study focused on one trajectory or type of PLC, and sought to better understand the implementation of an organizational systemic knowledge transfer structure and the impact on teacher practice from the participants' perception. The research design profided thick, rich data, which offered in-depth understandings of the participants' perception, beliefs, and assumption about the LTMs' impact on teacher practice and student achievement. Through the research it was determined that participants among all three of the schools sites believed that LTMs were changing teacher practice. / Further, the participants at each of the school sites recognized the significance of the LTF and that he or she plays an essential role in the LTMs. The significance of the study, implications of these findings, and recommendations for further research are also presented. / by Ora Meles. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. The analysis will in the teaching of language teaching materials developed by this school that follows the guidelines of the official documents of the Ministry of Education and Culture, the National Curriculum, working to guide the process of teaching with the genre analysis. We will also consider whether the reflective teacher can carry out teaching with some autonomy by intervening when necessary in the process of teaching and learning, and how these interventions might occur. During this analysis we present the theoretical framework of Education Linguistics as a research and teaching. Define the concept of genre and how they can contribute to language teaching. We selected some of the concepts related to teaching Textual Linguistics and the concept of Education Booklet. After analyzing the corpus, we conclude that the reflective teacher can intervene in the development of language teaching, but the teacher's manual usually offers no theoretical knowledge, and Education Booklet does not address properly the teaching of genre in all its potential, sometimes emphasizing the normative grammar with focus on sentences / Este trabalho foca a análise do aspecto gramatical de ensino na apostila de ensino do Sistema Positivo de Ensino do 7º ano (antiga 6ª série), sob a perspectiva da Educação Linguística.

Gonçalves, Fabíola Regina Mamede January 2015 (has links)
Orientadora: Profa. Dra. / The teaching profession in the current sphere of teacher education, need to abandon the concept of mere transmission of academic knowledge, for the conditions and teaching contexts evolve faster and faster, a fact that contradicts a timeless teaching practice and based only on training initial. The inclusion of activities in the school routine of teachers is under investigation of this research, which starting from Perrenoud ideas (2000, 2002) seek to explain the importance of continuing teacher education. In this perspective, the general objectives of this research master investigates the contributions of actions carried out under the Projeto Brinca Ciência (PBC), in particular the workshops held in Sabina, as a continuing education space for elementary school teachers in public schools. So the crux of this research is: How the training provided by the PBC can contribute a reflective teaching practice? The PBC, in turn, was an initiative of the Education Secretariat Town's Santo André, which sought to contribute to the improvement of education and science of learning from the educational activities of experimental and playful offered to teachers and students elementary school, final cycle. It is noteworthy that some indicators already showed that the PBC had been consolidating successfully and with great acceptance in the municipal ABC network, according to data obtained from teachers' reports and some preliminary assessments of the PBC itself. However, you could see still the need to conduct more systematic and detailed study of the dimensions of the teaching-learning process fostered by the PBC and how they impacted the teaching practice to thus better understand the contributions that PBC's actions could provide educators and, indirectly, students. Based on the assumptions of qualitative research, the analysis of data obtained through the data collection instruments, namely questionnaires, audiovisual recordings and interviews, seems to indicate that the activities proposed under the PBC can contribute not only in speech but also in teaching practices, particularly with regard to the mobilization of basic skills for teaching, in particular in developing a reflective attitude.

The Effect Of Explicit Embedded Reflective Instruction On Nature Of Science Understandings, Scientific Literacy Levels And Achievement On Cell Unit

Koksal, Mustafa Serdar 01 January 2010 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of explicit-embedded-reflective (EER) instruction on nature of science (NOS) understandings, scientific literacy levels and cell content knowledge of the ninth grade advanced science students. This study has been conducted with 71 students by using non-equivalent quasi-experimental design. In the treatment groups, the EER teaching has been conducted while NOS instruction in the comparison group for the same time interval has been done by lecture, demonstration and questioning strategies. Views on Nature of Science Questionnaire-Form C, Nature of Science Literacy Test, Cell Content Knowledge Test, and interviews have been used for data collection. Categorization of the participants&rsquo / profiles on the NOS aspects, paired samples t-tests and one-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) have been used for data analysis. The results have shown the participants have had misunderstandings about &ldquo / one method in science&rdquo / , &ldquo / no hierarchy between law and theory&rdquo / and &ldquo / difference between observation and inference&rdquo / while they have had expert views on &ldquo / role of creativity and imagination&rdquo / at the beginning of the study. For elimination of na&iuml / ve views, the EER approach has been found as effective. The approach has also been determined as effective on the increase in scientific literacy levels and learning on cell unit. In addition, the EER approach is more effective on learning cell content knowledge and gaining expert understandings of NOS than common approach in comparison group while there has been no difference between the scores of two groups in terms of scientific literacy levels.

Investigating the role of portfolios in developing reflective practice : a case study

Mbango, Karolina Naango January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the purpose and role portfolios are playing in developing reflective practice in student teachers and to assess the degree to which this role is being achieved in practice. This study was a interpretive small scale case study. The target groups were 3 student teachers in their final year of study, 3 teacher educators and the vice-rector of the college. Data were obtained through interviews and document analysis. The findings indicated that the students had no meaningful orientation to both the role of portfolio development and reflective skills. The sources of this were the lack of common understanding among teacher educators, lack of support for both teacher educators and student teachers and lack of time, lack of guidelines for construction and clear assessment rubric. The results of this study indicated that the teacher educators were in need of vigorous professional development and considerable implementation strategies are needed to develop the desired reflective skills.
