D.Ed. / The number of learners sentenced at the children's court and criminal court to reformatory and industrial schools increase annually. The nature of the offences by children is becoming more serious. Today offences like armed robbery, murder, rape and dealing in drugs are common, as opposed to a few years ago when offences like aggressive behaviour, shoplifting, and refusal to do homework or attend school were the norm in these cases. Learners who are sentenced to reformatory and industrial schools must be rehabilitated. This implies that these schools should have a rehabilitation programme in place. The researcher is the manager responsible for reformatory and industrial schools in the Mpumalanga Department of Education. It is in this capacity the researcher noted that these schools do not have suitable rehabilitation programmes available for these learners. The aim of the research was to establish themes to be included in rehabilitation programmes for reformatory and industrial schools. The research design is qualitative, explorative and descriptive. The research method is divided into three phases. The first phase applied a situational analysis to establish the themes of the rehabilitation programme. In phase two the information obtained was organised into categories and subcategories. The following main themes were identified: • problematic view of the self; • problematic view of parents of the learner; and • problematic view of the future. The third was to develop a rehabilitation programme and implement it at the reformatory and industrial schools in the Mpumalanga Province. The development of the programmes was based on the developmental approach. This approach ensures that the focus is placed on the strong positive aspects of the learner during the rehabilitation programme. The learners develop skills to identify their own problems and to solve the identified problems. The aim of the rehabilitation programme is to achieve the following: • the learner must demonstrate an understanding of his/her problematic situation; • the learner must form new meanings; • reformulation of norms and values need to take place; and • self-acceptance and a focus on the future must take place. For the successful implementation of the rehabilitation programme the researcher acts as the provincial coordinator. A provincial multidisciplinary team consisting of the following people assists the provincial coordinator: principlas from reformatory and industrial schools and the psychologist of each school. The personnel members of each school are utilised as facilitators of the rehabilitation programme. The rehabilitation programme is presented to groups of learners. Techniques like story telling, dramatisation, group work, competitions, and games are used in this programme. The learner starts the rehabilitation programme the day he/she is admitted to the school. The programme is complete when the learner is rehabilitated and ready to be placed back in the community. This occurs when he can accept himself and is able to strive towards realistic future expectations and success.

M.Cur. (Intensive General Nursing) / It appears that the emotions of patients in.the process of undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery have an influence on the rate of mortality. Patients that must undergo this surgery often find themselves in a short term dependent position. The purpose of this study is to determine if the life-style functioning of the patients can be improved by means of a pre-operative rehabilitative educational programme introduced by the professional nurse. A conceptual framework of reference was compiled after completion of the literature review. This served as the preliminary structure of the pre-operative educational programme. The programme consists of three three components, viz. an education booklet, an educational evaluating model and the educationist. A quasi-experimental study was performed on 4 groups (2 experimental groups and 2 control groups) to determine the effect of the structured pre-operative educational programme on the following three factors: - satisfaction with self, others and life; -avoidance of hope threats and -anticipation of a future. From these factors three null hypotheses were formed. An analysis of the data indicated a significant difference between the groups that followed the programme and the groups that did not follow the programme. The null hypotheses were thereafter rejected. The primary recommendation of the study is that all patients in the process of undergoing coronary artery bypass graft surgery should follow a pre-operative educational programme. This programme has a positive influence on the life-style functioning of the patient and will thus promote the process of rehabilitation.

This study will be focussing on the experiences of Xhosa-speaking patients with DM utilising the NMMM public hospitals complex. In the OPD patients are assessed and treated for all chronic conditions including DM, and patients are seen at monthly intervals or when necessary. The OPD serves the neighbouring black population from the surrounding townships as well as the informal settlements. The effects of urbanisation have resulted in this area having a semi–rural, semi-urban population that is mostly Xhosa speaking. The bulk of the population is unemployed, while others are living on a minimal income. Unemployment in the Eastern Cape ranges from 40% in rural areas, rising to 50 - 60% in the urban areas (Proposed aluminium Pechiney smelter within the Coega IDZ, 2002:4-8). In some homes there is no or little money to buy food, and even less to make use of a health service. Some people live on either a social grant for the elderly, a grant for young children or a disability grant and most people in this area have an income below the level at which payment of taxes for contribution to the economy is possible.

M.A. / The line between the postmodernism and modernism is largely unbridgeable. The line between left and right sides is also division. Sometimes there is a narrow and rapid point of crossing, and then it is gone. Modernism and post modernism are only alike in their sharing of a common semantic. The line is a division in thinking. Both sides are isolated by the lack of a significant bridge. The line also signifies that there can either be one or the other way of thinking, the two cannot exist on the same page - but they do. And they do it in life, too. Psychology has, by it's very attempts to prove itself a science, isolated the individuals uniqueness and connection with other humanity, by inadvertently developing a therapeutic stance of separateness and isolation. What makes this doubly sad is that psychology has rationalised that this is not the case. The right side of the text speaks clearly of human input, and pro-active contact on a physical and caring level, and the residents grow. The left hints at what might be the case, because it is, after all, only a theory. The research conducted looks good, but may not be correct... No theory will put itself on the line. The right side is on the line every second of every day. Lives are being built here. By sitting and reflecting at a person, in a 'therapeutic environment', the person is immediately isolated from any human social interaction or input. By studying the individual and his behaviour with a view to dissect cause, effect and totality have become victims. The person of needs be must become 'abnormal'. He becomes different, an anomaly. Then both himself and the community scream for an end to stigmatization. This text is a metaphor for the conflict experienced between being humans and psychology. There are many other ways to view this text.

M.A. (Social Work) / The treatment of alcoholism is/provided for by many institutions. Social work is one of the disciplines directly involved and responsible for the treatment of alcoholics. One of a number of problems inherent to service delivering to alcoholics is the problem of premature termination of treatment. In this study the occurrence of premature termination at the West Rand Clinic of the South African National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence is determined and the effect of premature termination of the treatment programme on the alcoholic is explored. To this end, patient files for the period January 1984 to December 1984 are examined. Four groups were identified on the basis of time spend in the treatment programme and stratified samples were drawn from these groups. A telephone schedule, based on relevant literature and the researcher's professional experience, was compiled and interviews were conducted to explore the effect of premature termination on the alcoholic. The findings of the study are summarized in the following conclusions : - The premature termination rate at the West Rand Clinic is congruent with findings of similar research. - Patients who terminated treatment prematurely reported lower levels of well~being than patients-who completed treatment.

Thesis (MPA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2015 / The study investigated the management of the social reintegration programme in the Department of Correctional Services in Mbombela Municipality, Mpumalanga Province. The role played by the stake holders in the programme and the department in rehabilitating and reintegrating the offenders. The purpose is to evaluate the effectiveness of the programme; social acceptance and the application of skills obtained in the correctional facility as a deterrent to committing a further crime.
Section 50 of the Correctional Services Act, 1998 (Act No. 111 of 1998); provide the following mandates; the objectives of the study is amongst others to afford sentenced offenders an opportunity to serve their sentences in a non- custodial manner, to enable persons subject to the programme to lead a specially responsible and crime free life during the period of their sentence and in future, to enable offenders to be rehabilitated in a manner that best keeps them as integral part of society and to enable them to be fully reintegrated into society when they have completed their sentences.
The investigation is both qualitative and quantitative whereby; it would be descriptive; analytical, interpretive and evaluative. The findings of this study have shown that the majority of offenders do not lead a crime free life after imprisonment. However, Correctional programmes rendered are designed to equip offenders with skills to lead a responsible life on reintegration and also the level at which other stake-holders are involving themselves in the reintegration of offenders in order to reduce reoffending.
The recommendations suggest the following as research findings:
• Offenders should be equipped with skills that can make them employable and self-sufficient in the outside world.
• Offenders should also be monitored even after hours; there must be no specific time of monitoring.
• More resources should be channelled to the programme.
• Correctional Services should employ the aid of external service providers in order to equip offenders with skills in the community and reduces the chances of reoffending.
• External stake-holders should continue rendering programmes to ex-offenders who exited the system.

Effectiveness of a parent training program on the use of communicative functions in young children with cerebral palsyVenter, Marissa January 2017 (has links)
A research report submitted to the Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts (Speech Pathology), 2017 / Background: The relevance and effectiveness of speech therapy interventions for children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) has come under scrutiny within the CP community. There is a need for evidence based research to be conducted within the CP population. Specifically with regard to the current speech therapy interventions that are being used for this population. There is a dearth of literature in favour of the efficacy of speech therapy interventions for the CP population. Furthermore, research within the South African context is required so as to identify the culturally specific needs of the population. In addition, South Africa faces challenges in providing culturally specific, cost effective and evidence based intervention for this population. This can be attributable to barriers such as the lack of human and financial resources.
Purpose: The main aim of the study was to measure change in the use of communicative functions of nine children with cerebral palsy following a five week parent training program. The main aim was achieved with the following sub-aims; 1) To assess the participant’s baseline performance in the use of communicative functions before the commencement of the parent training, 2) To assess the participant’s performance in the use of communicative functions after the 5 week parent training had taken place, 3) To assess the participant’s performance in the use of communicative functions 3 months after the post intervention assessment and 4) To describe the effectiveness of a parent training program in improving a child with CP’s ability to make use of communicative functions.
Method: The parents of nine children underwent a parent training program namely the Malamulel Onward Carer-2-Carer Training Program. The nine children were assessed before, immediately after and 3 months after the intervention. The scales, namely the Preschool Language Scale-5 and the Communication Matrix were used in the baseline assessment and reassessment phases of the study and yielded numerical data that described the children’s communication abilities.
Results: All the children (n=9) demonstrated a positive increase in communication from
test 1 through to test 3 on the Communication Matrix. The p-value for test 1 to test 2 was p=0.0078, test 2 to test 3 were p=0.0313 and test 1 to test 2 were p=0.0313 indicating significant change. The performance on the PLS-5 for majority (n=8) of the sample was unexpected. The majority of participants (n=7) displayed an increase in the PLS-5 score from test 1 to test 2; with one participant displaying a positive change across all three testing occasions on the PLS-5. However, a decrease in the PLS-5 score was seen in majority (n=5) of the participants from test 2 to test 3.
Conclusion: Based on the findings of this research, the use of parent training appears to be a viable form of intervention to improve the use of communicative functions in children with CP. However, further steps need to be taken to incorporate an individual follow up component after the parent training to ensure carry over and maintenance of skills covered in the workshops. In addition, due to questions around the efficacy of the PLS-5 with individuals who have CP, assessments need to comprise of a standardized tool in addition to an observational tool so as to acquire a more holistic view of a child with CP’s communication skills. / XL2018
