Micro-images, Genera and Poème Exotique: a Guide to Tone Color Selection, Relative Dynamics and Temporal Pacing for Effective Performances of Three Microtonal Flute Works by Daniel Kessner

Sánchez, Terri 08 1900 (has links)
Micro-Images for Solo Flute, Genera for Flute/Alto Flute/Bass Flute and Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, and Poème exotique for Flute and Piano by American composer Daniel Kessner (b. 1946) utilize a hybrid compositional approach in which microtones are incorporated with more traditional chromatic writing. Through representative musical examples from each piece, this document highlights the timbral, dynamic and pacing complexities associated with the microtonal fingerings and prompts flutists to forgo idiosyncratic tendencies in favor of contextually based choices. In order to help guide musicians toward effective performances of these three pieces and similar works, a new tone color spectrum and description of relative dynamics are provided along with a discussion of the relationships between tone colors, relative dynamics and temporal pacing. Appendices include transcripts of email interviews with composer Daniel Kessner and Carla Rees, British contemporary flutist, as well as an updated list of Kessner’s flute works.

Anhörigomsorgens relationer : Om hur relationer påverkas av anhörigomsorg / Family member caregiving : About how relationships gets affected by family member caregiving

Olsson, Sandra January 2021 (has links)
In this project I have studied how the relationship between a caregiver and an older caretaker can be affected by family member caregiving. I interviewed five social workers at Kristianstad municipality who work assessing the need of homecare services for individuals over 65 years. The questions that were asked arebased on my essay's purpose: to investigate whether and in what way the relationship between caregiver and caretaker is affected by one of the relatives providing the other one care. The purpose is also to make visible various components that affects and changes the relationship. The results were analyzed based on Nel Noddings care ethics. My study shows that family member caregiving is often a result of love and solicitude. Many caregivers find the caregiving to be a natural acting due to the relationship. Other caregivers experience caregiving as a duty and sometimes do it because of the fear of another person giving the wrong type of care to the caretaker. The positive outcomes of family member caregiving is that the caregiver feels needed and feels a sense of meaningfulness. Family member caregiving can result in a feeling of safety since the caregiver has a valuable insight in the caretakers needs and situation. The negative outcomes of family member caregiving is that the caregiver can feel sorrow over the caretakers situation. The caregiver can also find it hard to accept help with the caregiving which may lead to lack of personal life. Caregiving can result in discomfort of stress and depression. It was clear that it is important that the caretaker shows appreciation for the provided care, or else the relationship would surely be weakened.

Skäl för agerande / Reasons for action

Rydeman, IngBritt January 2020 (has links)
The aim of the thesis was to critically examine different philosophical views regarding reasons for action and how reasons are justified based on values and the good. How credible and reasonable are the arguments and their relation to values and the good? The theories of following philosophers have been examined: Thomas Nagel, Christine Korsgaard and R Jay Wallace. I argue that reasons for actions should be based on solid grounds and that the reasons and values should be considered as subjective and agent-relative. Nagel is the only one who claims that there are irreducible agent-relative reasons and values, something that is disputed by both Korsgaard and Wallace. However, I mean that they both a certain agent-relativity in their arguments, Korsgaard in ambitions and Wallace in special cases. They all contribute with significant arguments about the fact that reasons does have a moral claim on the agent, regardless of the type of reasons they advocate. However, values cannot possibly be accepted or appear credible based on Nagel's argument that the values are objective without human involvement. Korsgaard has an important view and succeeds in a credible way in contributing to the explanation that values can only arise from humanity. Another important and relevant argument, highlighted by all three, is about how we must relate to each other as a prerequisite for the good. Agent-relative reasons appear to be the most credible and are based on the agent's ability and capacity to assess moral aspects when relevant. How we can agree on reasons and share them remains unresolved, therefore shared, public and agent-neutral reasons seem problematic.

Influence of Water Absorption on Volume Resistivity and the Dielectric Properties of Neat Epoxy Material

Sulaimani, Anwar Ali 15 July 2014 (has links)
Epoxy resins are widely used materials in the industry as electrical insulators, adhesives and in aircrafts structural components because of their high mechanical stiffness, strength and high temperature and chemical resistance properties. But still, the influence of water uptake due to moisture adsorption is not fully understood as it detrimentally modifies the electrical and chemical properties of the material. Here ,we investigate the influence of water moisture uptake on the neat epoxy material by monitoring the change in the volume resistivity and dielectric properties of epoxy material at three different thickness configurations: 0.250 mm, 0.50 mm and 1 mm thicknesses. Gravimetric analysis was done to monitor the mass uptake behaviour, Volume Resistivity was measured to monitor the change in conductivity of the material, and the dielectric properties were mapped to characterise the type of water mechanism available within the material during two ageing processes of sorption and desorption. Two-stage behaviours of diffusion and reaction have been identified by the mass uptake analysis. Moreover, the plot of volume resistivity versus mass uptake has indicated a non-uniform relationship between the two quantities. However, the analysis of the dielectric spectrum at medium range of frequency and time has showed a change in the dipolar activities and also showed the extent to which the water molecules can be segregated between bounding to the resin or existing as free water

Relative Performance Evaluation and Peer Quality

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: Relative performance evaluation (RPE) in Chief Executive Officer (CEO) compensation contracts entails the use of peer performance to filter out exogenous shocks and reduce exposure to risk. Theory predicts that high-quality peers can effectively filter out noise from performance measurement, yet prior empirical studies do not examine how differences in peer quality affect the use of RPE in practice. In this study, I propose a model to select peers with the highest capacity to filter out noise and introduce a novel measure of peer quality. Consistent with the theory, I find that firms with high quality peers rely on RPE to a greater extent than firms with few good peers available. I also examine the extent to which peers disclosed in proxy statements overlap with the best peers predicted by my model. I find that the overlap is positively associated with institutional ownership, use of top 5 compensation consultants, and compensation committee competence. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Accountancy 2020

Indonésie: ohnisko teroristických aktivit? / Indonesia: Hotbed for Terrorist Activities?

Lim, Selynn Yan Ting January 2019 (has links)
Selynn Yan Ting Lim Abstract The thesis endeavours to use the concept of relative deprivation to explain and account for the reasons behind the various manifestations of political and religious tension in Indonesia. From the most recent series of bombings in Surabaya in 2018, to the conflicts in the Maluku Islands back in 1999, it is undeniable that Indonesia is not immune to extremist activities or religious- political conflicts. The involvement of Political Entrepreneurs (PEs), such as giving a frame to people's perceived grievances, drive sentiments of being deprived in relative to other groups. Such feelings are especially made salient with the influence of social media. At the same time, the Indonesian government's advocacy of the wasatiyyah concept, which means middle-path Islam, appears to be its most effective tool in countering the trend of extremism in the society. However, such an interpretation of Islam is potentially at odds with the "right" form of Islam as practiced by the Muslims in Saudi Arabia. Faced with increasing pressure from Islamic hardliners in the society, the Indonesian state ideology - Pancasila - is under much threat as people are gradually becoming disillusioned with it.

Heatwave Events and Mortality Outcomes in Memphis, Tennessee: Testing Effect Modification by Socioeconomic Status and Urbanicity

Li, Ying, Akkus, Cem, Yu, Xinhua, Joyner, Andrew, Kmet, Jennifer, Sweat, David, Jia, Chunrong 02 November 2019 (has links)
Heatwave studies typically estimate heat-related mortality and morbidity risks at the city level; few have addressed the heterogeneous risks by socioeconomic status (SES) and location within a city. This study aimed to examine the impacts of heatwaves on mortality outcomes in Memphis, Tennessee, a Mid-South metropolitan area top-ranked in morbidity and poverty rates, and to investigate the effects of SES and urbanicity. Mortality data were retrieved from the death records in 2008–2017, and temperature data from the Applied Climate Information System. Heatwave days were defined based on four temperature metrics. Heatwave effects on daily total-cause, cardiovascular, and respiratory mortality were evaluated using Poisson regression, accounting for temporal trends, sociodemographic factors, urbanicity, and air pollution. We found higher cardiovascular mortality risk (cumulative RR (relative risk) = 1.25, 95% CI (confidence interval): 1.01–1.55) in heatwave days defined as those with maximum daily temperature >95th percentile for more than two consecutive days. The effects of heatwaves on mortality did not differ by SES, race, or urbanicity. The findings of this study provided evidence to support future heatwave planning and studies of heatwave and health impacts at a coarser geographic resolution.

Emergency Medicine Versus Primary Care: A Case Study of Three Prevalent, Costly, and Non-Emergent Diagnoses at a Community Teaching Hospital

Martin, B. C. 01 December 2000 (has links)
The high cost of emergency department (ED) care is often viewed as an area for achieving cost savings through reduced utilization for inappropriate conditions. The implementation of outpatient prospective payment for Medicare ED patients heightens scrutiny of costs and utilization in the ED versus primary care settings. Data from hospital clinical records, financial records, and a provider survey was used to develop a costing methodology and complete a comparative analysis of the cost of care for three diagnoses by setting. Total costs were significantly higher in the ED due primarily to differences in ancillary tests and prescription drugs ordered.

Confidence Intervals for a Ratio of Two Independent Binomial Proportions

Price, Robert, Bonett, Douglas G. 01 November 2008 (has links)
Several large-sample confidence intervals for the ratio of independent binomial proportions are compared in terms of exact coverage probability and width. A non-iterative approximate Bayesian interval is derived and its frequency properties are superior to all of the non-iterative confidence intervals considered. The approximate Bayesian interval, which is very easy to compute, has performance characteristics that are very similar to the computationally intensive score method. Two sample size determination formulas are presented, one for desired absolute precision and the other for desired relative precision.
