This research compares and contrasts the life histories of eleven Bahraini Muslim women, aged between twenty five and fifty, who are educationally ‘successful’, defined as having one or more university degree. It analyzes their educational experiences to see if theories of social reproduction apply to their lives. To this end, the work of Pierre Bourdieu and his concept of cultural capital in its institutionalized, objectified and embodied states are applied, where possible, to the women’s life histories, in particular their educational experiences and related areas. This work shows that embodied cultural capital plays a part in the educational success of the women involved in this study, regardless of social class. For some of the women, institutionalized and objectified cultural capital also played a part and the women who possess these tend to come from more affluent families. It also appears that significant others and critical incidents influence their educational successes. Significant others are those people who have encouraged them educationally in different ways: critical incidents include such things as government scholarships for university degree courses within Bahrain and abroad. Having these things may help other Bahraini Muslim women achieve educational ‘success’. Additionally, the women’s innate ability, their ability to juggle their many life projects and roles, other forms of capital (especially economic capital), their marital status, religious obligations and their culture, all influence their educational choices.

Para tanto, fundamentamo-nos no referencial teÃrico marxiano-lukacsiano e recorremos, ainda, Ãs contribuiÃÃes de importantes intelectuais marxistas atentos ao debate ambiental e à sua premÃncia no quadro de prioridades do projeto socialista. O objetivo à reafirmar a gravidade da atual conjuntura socioambiental e compreender, de forma mais concreta, este nosso patente cenÃrio de crise ambiental, transcendendo à aparÃncia dos fenÃmenos, a fim de uma explicaÃÃo coerente, que supere o artificialismo subjetivista e as propostas de resoluÃÃo esvaziadas de conteÃdo e legitimidade, que tentam encontrar soluÃÃes dentro de esferas reformistas tecno-mercadolÃgicas. Nesse Ãnterim, ao mesmo tempo em que o capitalismo transforma-se em green capitalism, presenciamos o agigantamento do complexo militar-industrial, o qual de forma alguma coincide com os interesses da humanidade e da sustentabilidade ambiental, porque aponta, ao fim e ao cabo, sua produÃÃo para fins destrutivos. Buscamos aqui entender quais sÃo os nexos que articulam a atual conjuntura ambiental planetÃria ao sÃcio-metabolismo de reproduÃÃo do capital, com suas diversas fases de ascensÃo e recessÃo, as quais por sua vez conduziram-no a um continuum depressivo, arrastando para o torvelinho de uma crise estrutural as dimensÃes sociais, Ãticas, polÃticas, econÃmicas e ambientais. / This dissertation consists in an effort at understanding the issues that permeate the environmental problem, which is within the current form of social reproduction â the contemporary capitalism. To this end, we ground our work in the Marxian-Lukacsian theoretic references, resorting also to the contributions of important Marxist intellectuals who are attentive to the environmental debate as well as to its urgency in the framework of priorities of the socialist project. Our goal is to reassert the gravity of the current socio-environmental conjuncture and understand in a more concrete way this evident scenario of environmental crisis. We will try to transcend the appearances of the phenomena in order to give a coherent assessment of them. Such an assessment shall surpass all subjectivist artificiality as well as the attempts of resolving the problem which are empty of content and legitimacy and which try to find solutions within the reformist techno-marketing spheres. In the meantime, while capitalism changes into green capitalism, we witness the great enlarging of the industrial-military complex. Such complex does not meet in any way the interests of humanity and of environmental sustainability, for in the end it aims its production for destructive purposes. We seek here to understand the connections that articulate the current planetary environmental conjuncture to the social metabolism of reproduction of the capital. Due to its many phases of rise and recession, the capital reproduction was led to a continuum of depression, dragging the social, ethical, political, economical and environmental dimensions to a swirl of structural crisis.

Esta pesquisa aborda as políticas territoriais implementadas no Distrito Federal com foco na área de expansão urbana de Águas Claras, levando em consideração os diversos fatores que contribuíram e contribuem para a produção deste espaço como tal, sua dinâmica e suas transformações. A produção do espaço no Distrito Federal intermediada pelo Estado proporciona áreas de expansão urbana, que são definidas em diferentes períodos, direcionando o mercado imobiliário para uma área pré-estabelecida, até que esta área fique saturada, deslocando esse mercado para outra área determinada pelo Estado, dando continuidade nesse processo, proporcionando sempre novas áreas para a reprodução do capital. Águas Claras surge como exemplo dessas áreas de expansão urbana no DF, parte integrante deste processo, que são estabelecidas a partir de uma demanda de ordem política e econômica. É importante salientar a propriedade da terra, visto que, as terras onde se encontra Águas Claras anteriormente pertenciam ao Governo do Distrito Federal e foram vendidas aos promotores imobiliários com o discurso de construir um local para habitação da classe média entre duas áreas já urbanizadas. Com isso, ao longo desta pesquisa, percebe-se que Águas Claras se materializa como sendo mais um espaço de realização de reprodução do capital no DF, porém com características peculiares que tornam o enfoque desta pesquisa interessante e diferente das outras análises feitas no Distrito Federal. / This research boards the territorial politics implemented in the Distrito Federal with focus in the urbane expansion of Águas Claras, taking into account several factors that contributed and still contribute to the production of this space such as its dynamic and transformations.The production of the space in the Distrito Federal is intermediated by the State. This intermediation provides areas of urbane expansion, which are defined in different periods, taking the building market for an established area, until this area is saturated, moving this market for another area determined by the State, giving continuity in this process, always providing new areas for the reproduction of the capital. Águas Claras is an example of an area in urbane expansion in the DF. Águas Claras is integrant part of this process, which is established from a demand of political and economical order. It is important point out that the property of the lands where Águas Claras is situeated previously were belonging to the Government of the Distrito Federal and they were sold to the property promoters with the speech of building a place for dwelling of the middle class between two already built-up areas. With that, along this research, it is realized which Águas Claras it materializes like being one more space of realization of reproduction of the capital in the DF, however with special characteristics that make the approach of this research interesting and different from other analyses done in the Federal area.
