Grafted Identities: Shrews and the New Woman Narrative in China (1910s-1960s)

Yang, Shu 21 November 2016 (has links)
My dissertation examines the unacknowledged role of negative female models from traditional literature in constructing the modern woman in China. It draws upon literary and historical sources to examine how modern cultural figures resuscitated and even redeemed qualities associated with traditional shrews in their perceptions and constructions of the new woman across the first half of the twentieth century. By linking the literary trope of the shrew, associated with imperial China, with the twentieth-century figure of the new woman, my work bridges the transition from the late-imperial to the modern era and foregrounds the late-imperial roots of Chinese modernization. The scope of my dissertation includes depictions of shrews/new women in literary texts, the press, theater, and public discourses from the Republican to the Socialist period. Although there exists a rich body of work on both traditional shrew literature and the new woman narrative, no one has addressed the confluence of the two in Chinese modernity. Scholars of late imperial Chinese literature have claimed that shrew literature disappeared when China entered the modern age. Studies on the new woman focus on specific social and cultural contexts during the different periods of modernizing China; few scholars have traced the effects that previous female types had on the new woman. My research reveals the importance of the traditional shrew in contributing to the construction and reception of the new woman, despite the radically changing ideologies of the twentieth century. As I argue, the feisty, rebellious modern women in her many guises as suffragette, sexual independent, and gender radical are female types grafted onto the violent, sexualized, and transgressive typologies of the traditional shrew. My research contributes to the studies of Chinese modernity and the representations of Chinese women. First, it bridges the artificial divide between modern and traditional studies of China and expands the debates about the nature of Chinese modernity. Second, it brings to light the underexamined constructions of the new woman as an empowered social actor through her genealogical connections to the traditional shrew. Third, it provides a methodology for rethinking the contested depiction of women in Chinese modernity.

Centro de difusión gastronómica en el distrito de Ancón / Gastronomic dissemination center in the Ancón district

Flores Palomino, Solange Stania Stephany 27 July 2020 (has links)
This project arises from the need to reactivate the gastronomic boom that has been lost, where one of the main factors is the lack of investment, reflecting the need for projects that promote gastronomy. The selected district will be Ancon, since it combines three important factors that make it an attractive destination, not only for tourism, but also for gastronomy. Factors such as: 1.The great cultural heritage it has 2.The diversity of natural resources it possesses due to its proximity to the sea 3.Ancon is a beach by excellence All this translates into a gastronomic market with an architectural emphasis on flexibility, generating spaces capable of adapting over time. This project has a triangular terrain with three fronts, which will share the block with a building to be maintained that is the Fire Department. It will consist of three levels, with a permeable volumetry developed around a central courtyard. The first level will consist of a small gourmet market. A second level with restaurants overlooking the FAP club and a third level totally open becoming a gastronomic terrace. An important criterion in the design process will be the architectural history of the area, where Republican architecture prevails, from which specific elements will be taken that are typical of the time, such as the use of «Teatinas» / Trabajo de investigación

A Stage for Gentility and the Performance of the Republican Gentleman:  Taverns in Richmond, Virginia from 1780 to 1820

Lennon, Heather N. 14 June 2013 (has links)
This thesis assesses the ways in which gentility served as a catalyst for the creation of a new masculine identity during the early American republic:  the Republican Gentleman.  In particular, I utilize taverns in Richmond, Virginia from 1780 to 1820, in which to understand the significance of gentility.  This thesis analyzes how Richmond taverns represented the growth of gentility through refined architecture and its male patrons.  It discusses how taverns, as predominantly male spaces, allowed for the expression of the Republican Gentleman's masculine identity.  The guiding research question for this thesis is how refined Richmond taverns illustrated the prominence of gentility, and thus provided a stage for the performance of the Republican Gentleman during the early national period.  Furthermore, this research is informed by the following secondary research questions:  In what ways did gentility and republicanism shape masculine identities?  How did evolving ideas of gentility and refinement shape physical tavern space and architecture?  The broader significance of this thesis is to offer an avenue in which to further develop scholars' understanding of the intersection of masculinity, class, and gentility during the early national period. / Master of Arts

Implementation and Administration of Radical Education in Texas: Politics or Reform in Education from 1870-1873

McClellan, Michael E. 08 1900 (has links)
This study examines the efforts of Radicals (Republicans) to establish a state-wide public school system in Texas between 1870 and 1873. Primary sources cover the chronological fringes of the period being examined. This study follows a chronological narrative with the four chapters examining first, educational trends in the southern states and Texas prior to Reconstruction, followed by examination of the Radical system in Texas, and, finally, its destruction by Conservative Texans. The final chapter focuses on immediate and long range results of Radical education. In examining the Radical educational program, an attempt has been made to dispel ideas popularly held by present-day Texans who believe that the Radical school program was simply another "carpetbagger" scheme for raiding the state treasury and building Radical patronage. This paper contends that the Radicals established as good a public school system as could be created at the time, and that it was administered in an honest and efficient manner. The system was destroyed by politicians and a grass roots revolt of taxpayers who had no faith in its methods, goals, or administrators.

The Significance and Impact of Women on the Rise of the Republican Party in Twentieth Century Texas

Strickland, Kristi Throne 08 1900 (has links)
During the early twentieth century, the Democratic party dominated the conservative political landscape of Texas. Through the 1920s, members of the Republican party focused on patronage and seemed content to maintain the position of minority party. A growing dissatisfaction with the liberal policies of the New Deal during the 1930s created opportunities for state Republicans to woo dissenting Democrats to their side. With a change of leadership within the state GOP after 1950, the Republicans waged serious campaigns for offices for the first time. Republican men exercised their political yearnings through leadership positions. Women, on the other hand, were shut out of the leadership ranks, and, as a consequence, they chose a traditional female strategy. They organized clubs in order to support the new leadership and rising candidates. Against formidable odds, Republican women acted as foot soldiers and worked diligently to attain their objectives. As early as 1920, Texas Republican women began to organize. In 1938 they joined the newly chartered National Federation of Republican Women. In 1955 Texas women organized the Texas Federation of Republican Women (TFRW). Working through the TFRW, the women became the catalysts that broke the Republican party from its state of inertia, and they significantly contributed to the breakdown of the one-party system in Texas. Willing to do the "shoe leather politicking" necessary for victory, women became invaluable to GOP candidates, who began their campaigns in the clubhouses of Republican women. In 1978, with the election of the first Republican governor in a century, Republicans finally brought competitive politics to Texas. By the 1990s, the GOP became the majority party in the state. Republican women were not only important to the growth of the party, they were the driving force that broke the state from the shackles of one-party rule by winning elections through grassroots efforts. This study fully recognizes the rich contribution women made to Texas politics throughout the twentieth century.

Det andra Frankrike : Reselitteraturen, revolutionen och den republikanska etnografin i Bretagne och Auvergne, 1792-1804

Lartaud, Elina January 2016 (has links)
The last two decades of the eighteenth century saw the emergence of numerous French travel compilations and descriptive texts studying the customs and ways of life of the peasants, an ethnographical interest that developed even further during the First French Republic. In this study, I identify and study a specific genre that I call republican ethnography. The republican ethnography was part of the Enlightenment’s search for a science of society and to the quest of finding the roots of the Republic. Studying travel literature and administrative reports from two French regions, Bretagne and Auvergne, this study examines the character and the meaning of the republican ethnographical projects. The republican travellers and administrators in Bretagne and Auvergne drew on a complex array of knowledge traditions, using categories from climate theory and medical thinking as well as the vocabulary of the travel literature. The study shows that the republican ethnography worked as way of establishing difference, where the French peasant was described as rude and “savage”, as well as similarity, since the travellers and administrators set out to find the unifying principles on which the Republic could be based.
