Using Qualitative Methods to Improve Physician Research Training: Understanding the Student PerspectiveKnapke, Jacqueline M, Haynes, Erin N., Vaughn, Lisa M 10 April 2017 (has links) (PDF)
For several decades now, physician-scientists have been referred to as an “endangered species.” Many factors have contributed to the dearth of clinical investigators, and training programs in clinical research are just one tool in a multi-pronged strategy to increase the number of successful physician-scientists working in health research. A qualitative approach that analyzes students’ educational goals and experiences can help fill the gaps in our knowledge about how best to train aspiring physician-scientists. This study was an interpretive phenomenology that evaluated the Master of Science program in Clinical and Translational Research (MSCTR) at the University of Cincinnati. The purpose of the study was to allow students to articulate their expectations, needs, and experiences in the MSCTR. The study included a group level assessment (GLA) and document review. Findings suggest several reasons students enrolled in the MSCTR, as well as some areas for improvement in the program: more physician-centered classes, a more directed curriculum, and a more cohesive course plan overall. Conclusions from these recommendations are that student perspectives can inform decisions around curricula and instructional methods in powerful ways, particularly when combined with a qualitative methodological approach. This study revealed several insights into how faculty and administrators can more effectively train physicians in research methodology. Training should be as applied and relevant as possible to make it directly applicable to clinical practice. This goal could be enhanced if classes – particularly statistics classes – were more physician-oriented. The curriculum of a clinical research training program for clinicians should be clear and directed, but with some flexibility and space within the curriculum for classes within areas of specialization. Collaboration should be integrated throughout, and courses should follow a logical, interconnected sequence.

Science Research Literacy Through Immersive Professional Development in Biomedical ResearchWhalen, Dara, 0000-0002-3291-876X 05 1900 (has links)
High school science teachers require increased skills in science research literacy, so that their students develop research competencies in the classroom (Evans, Warning, & Christodoulou, 2017; Udompong, Traiwichitkhun, & Wongwanich, 2014). For teachers to promote a scientific atmosphere, literature points to training that fosters authentic spaces in the school setting. Working in collaboration with scientists offers teachers ways to scaffold laboratory experiences that address the needs of their students and models scientific communication and behaviors (www.nextgenscience.org/faqs).
This research includes creating and sustaining long term collaborations between scientists and teachers while also identifying professional development that enables both laboratory research and science education. Applying science research literacy skills will empower teacher to meet the challenges set by national standards, through which science laboratory experiments in secondary education classrooms necessitate teachers to embrace new methods of lesson delivery and identify organic points, in the required curriculum, for the incorporation of authentic scientific inquiry (Ufnar & Shepherd, 2018). Observing and interacting, with the participants throughout the various levels of immersive I anticipate creating enhanced programming, science teacher PD’s, and workshops that will enable science teachers, both face-to-face and via virtual-hybrid programs, to impart the sense of being in a lab to their students while bringing authentic research activities to life during classroom inquiry. This promotes culturally relevant experiences within the context of the scientific one.
Ideal subjects for this study will be in-service science teachers in possession of a minimum Bachelor’s degree. Subject matter and experience in research science is not a disqualifier. However, interest in life science, biological science, health science, environmental science, or biochemistry will be required. Through ethnographic research, the cultural forms, values, and practices that are essential to the cultural reproduction of scientific research literacy will be documented. I will engage in this research as an ethnographer and having the role of active observer, analyzing cultural behaviors (Brandt & Carlone, 2012; Camarata, et al., 2017) and the development of science research literacy of science teachers following engagement with professional research scientists during immersive professional development programs. Ethnographic research will allow me to uncover the practices as I experience the process along with the participants and while my research will be conducted through an ethnographic lens, writing will be included as to acknowledge the work as a case study bounded by the shared experience and context of the participants. Moreover, following the proposed research, teachers could enact a swift change in science classroom culture, by embracing a more scientific one (Erickson, 1984). / Math & Science Education

FormaÃÃo contÃnua e prÃticas de leitura: o olhar do professor dos anos finais do ensino fundamental.Elcimar SimÃo Martins 11 June 2014 (has links)
This thesis aimed to understand the relationship between lifelong learning and reading practices through the look of the teachers of the last years of elementary school, from Aracoiaba-CE. Considering that such teachers attending a training group, interested to know what they were doing in the impasse between the written and the lived between the written and the lived, in other words, between the training group and reading practices in primary education schools. This work results of the meeting and the redefinition of personal and professional authorâs experiences allied to his process of continuous formation. Because of the complexity of the object of study, we opted for a qualitative research approach. The research-training was chosen by favoring the possibility of transformation of practices, considering the teacher of elementary school as essential to the investigation. Interviews were conducted with a sample of teachers, besides documentary sources were used. It was used the referential epistemology of practice, reflective teacher, teacher formation through the studies of SchÃn (2000, 1992), NÃvoa 1995), Imbernon (2009, 2010, 2011), Ribeiro (2010), Pimenta and Lima (2009), Ghedin, Almeida and Leite (2008), Pimenta and Ghedin (2002), Pimenta (2006), Lima (2012), Tardif (2013), Certeau (2012), among others. About the reading and readers practical, we used studies from Manguel (1997), Chartier (1996, 2007, 2009), Freire (1988), Silva (2012, 2005, 2000, 1997), Antunes (2009, 2003) were used, Lajolo (2008), Bamberger (2002), among others. The set of analyzes reveal that subjects consider the group as a legitimate learning space, revealing the importance of training as a collective project. Teachers emphasize the importance of sharing experiences with their pairs, the trust that has been generated in the group and the development of a process of reflection and investigation of reading practices developed at schools. The involvement of teachers in research-training group produced new knowledge that was linked to teaching practice. The offer of continuous training for teachers of basic education should not be at the mercy of the political will of a manager who holds the power in a timely manner. It should be thought and carried out as one continuous action, which does not suffer interruption with the change of who is ahead of decisions of education.

Previous issue date: 2012 / This thesis focuses on the enhancement of African Worldview in the school situation in teacher training. Its relevance is justified legally from January 9, 2003, when the then president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, promulgates the Law N. 10.639/2003, which concerns the inclusion of the teaching of History and Culture of African and Afro - Brazilian in primary schools. Teachers, it is compliance with law. However, despite what the law cited versa, teachers did not have, in general, in their initial training, adequate preparation for the demands of articulation of such content in their educational practice. However, the CNE / CP no. 01 /2004 instructs that it is the responsibility of higher education institutions nurture the initial and continuing training of teachers, as well as carry out teaching, research and outreach on the topic. Inspired by the elements exposed, I decided to conduct a training course for teachers in the state of Piauí articulating the triad teaching, research and extension, since I am a professor at the Federal University of Piauí, in the city of Floriano, local field research. It is a researchtraining to influence the action research and sociopoética from the fundamentals of theoretical and methodological titled Pret@gogia. The training took place during the school year of 2011 and 2012 at the Municipal School Eleuterio Rezende and his execution took place as university extension numbering four fellows involved. Its main objective was to promote the training course for teachers of elementary school, aiming at the enhancement of generator theme "African Worldview" We conducted seven modules, during which teachers, researcher and scholars extension project studied, developed and implemented action plans for interventional training of teachers. These in turn reissued their pedagogical and curricular transforming the school into the territory of valuing African worldview through the articulation of its theoretical and methodological principles. In addition to this finding, analysis of interventive actions also revealed in the transformative potential of research - teaching – training, particularly in view of the self-training for all of us involved in the process. The research is also grounded in a theoretical- methodological phase of pregnancy the nucleus of Africanidades Cearenses - UFC and I help develop and implement in the context of research and teaching titled pret@gogia. This contribution is guided by the principles of ancestry and orality present in the African worldview. Elaborated a particular style of writing. I venture in creating characters, which I call my "I" s ancestors. They narrate tales from research plots in seeking to articulate the scientific rigor required a survey of literary writing and oral tradition of the African worldview.

This study focuses on the training of music educators in Master's Degree from the perspective of postgraduates from Music Postgraduate Programs in Brazil. The focus was to understand the process of academic and research training of the postgraduates and to reflect about the reverberation of that training in their current/ future professional/ academic activities. The main purpose of this study was to identify the learning processes provided in different postgraduate courses and to reflect on its steps in order to make this dissertation. The research participants were postgraduate students in Music Educational programs in the years of 2011, 2012 and 2013. The method used was case study as of Merriam (2009), Yin (2015) and Flick (2009). Data was collected through an online questionnaire and distance semi-structured interview, based on Gil (2008), Bell (2008), Hernández Sampieri, Fernández Collado and Baptista Lucio (2006), Taylor and Bogdan (1994), and were categorized by adopting the perspective of Bogdan and Biklen (1994). The analysis seeks to understand the academic experiences during the Masters, especially in the practice of scientific research. The study was theoretically supported by authors such as: Fourez (1995), who defines the concept of scientific community; Mills (2009), who explains the tasks of an academic work; Bastian (2000), Kraemer (2000), Souza (1996, 2001, 2003 and 2007) and Frega (1986, 1997 and 2000), who discuss the epistemology of music education and the research practices in training music educators. The analysis revealed a myriad of senses of how alumni understand academic investigation; they expressed what they learned in the postgraduate course and what was its impact on their training as researchers and music educators. The postgraduates described academic experiences that have contributed in their personal and professional journey and pointed out their future plans with regard to continued training in postgraduate level and to improvement research practices. The study substantiates the importance of Music Education Postgraduate Programs and contributes with reflections on the research practices of musical educators.
