Polyfunkční blok na území bývalé textilní továrny Vlněna v Brně / Multifunctional Block in the Former Textile Factory Vlněna in Brno

Šturm, Vladimír January 2013 (has links)
The project deals with the analysis of the current state of the former textile factory Vlnena and its surroundings, urban design study and detailed design of multifunctional block of houses in this area. Urban study responds to the actual intentions of Brno and creates a clear urban structure that respects the existing landmarks in the area. Designed urban block combines preserved factory buildings new constructions, which complements the urban structure. Two former administration buildings taken over housing and hotel functions. Hall of repairs is adjusted for cultural use in connection with the courtyard. The former building of needlework with new completion creates creative center with ateliers, presentation rooms and exhibition space in the ground floor. The block is closed by new buildings of relaxation center with wellness and sports activities and residential building. New buildings are linked to the underground car park.

STRATEGIE OBNOVY A REVITALIZACE ŽIDOVSKÉ ČTVRTI V TŘEBÍČI / STRATEGY RENEWAL AND REVITALIZATION OF THE JEWISH QUARTER IN TŘEBÍČ

Teplíčková, Jana January 2015 (has links)
The main subject matter of this thesis is to design a renewal strategy and revitalization of the Jewish quarter in Třebíč. Even though it has recently been filed on a prestigeous list of UNESCO heritage sites and the town has seen significant effort in the direction of its renewal, this quarter still has some drawbacks. One of the problems observed is the inadequate technical condition of considerable number of buildings, while other is the insufficient usage of public areas. One can still notice the stigma of a socially excluded and a dangerous district. These traits are most evident in the immediate vicinity of the Subak’s factory. Main goal of this work is to coin an identity change of this site and transform it into an attractive and safe place, unique for its history and atmosphere – a quarter suitable for long-term residence as well as short-term visit. In achieving these goals, methods of tactical urbanism have been employed in the form of public space intervention and then a long-term visions are proposed in the form of the design of new functions at the site and a reconstruction of the formerly torn down historical buildings. A very important aspect of the proposed solution is the preservation of the historical urbanistic structure of the quarter and a respect for contemporary requirements laid on modern functions of a residential area at the same time.

Microgravity Vortex Phase Separator for Liquid Amine CO2 Removal System

Sarvadi, Alexander Armstrong 08 1900 (has links)
The present study investigates vortex phase separator (VPS) technology as a new approach for a liquid amine CO2 removal system. Experimental results obtained using a 99.99% pure CO2 stream and liquid amine with varying concentrations demonstrate the VPS' ability to decrease CO2 volume at its gas outlet. Operating parameters such as CO2 flow rate, relative humidity (RH), and temperature were systematically varied during experimental procedure, as well as working fluid temperature, volume, and flow rate. The subscale design for a VPS with a 3" inner diameter, 3.5" outer diameter, and 3.63" height removed a maximum of 84% of CO2 from a CO2 stream at 3.7 SCFH flow rate, 14°C temperature, and 82% RH, using 100 mL of 100% amine circulated at 1.52 LPM flow rate. The designed VPS also showed to be effective in removing relative humidity of the CO2 stream by up to 26% for the stated parameters. Regeneration of liquid amine in the VPS system is also proposed to allow for continuous CO2 removal. The results obtained in this work characterize the VPS system for CO2 removal in terms of various operating parameters for the gas (CO2) and liquid (liquid amine) phases, as well as provide initial insights into how a VPS sized for stability and applied to CO2 removal performs. This work demonstrates VPS technology as an effective, alternative CO2 removal technology that could be scaled and used to support human exploration of space.

Downtown Revitalization: Consumers' and City Planners' Perceived Barriers to Integrating Large-Scale Retail Into the Downtown

Donofrio, Jennifer M 01 December 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Statement of Problem Revitalization of downtowns across America continues to be challenged by the shift to the suburbs. The barriers to integrating large-scale retail in a small, medium, and large city downtown were examined. Forces of Data The System View Planning Theory (Taylor, 1998) guided the study of city planners’ and consumers’ perceived barriers to integrating large scale retail into the downtown. In order to ascertain the barriers to integrating large-scale retail into the downtown intercept-surveys with consumers (n=30, responded to the intercept survey in each city) and interviews with city planners were conducted. Conclusion Reached Some significant differences were found between perceived barriers towards integrating large-scale retail into small and large-city downtowns. Although most consumers reported a positive attitude towards large-scale retail, most consumers in Tucson and San Diego indicated that the cost of shopping in the downtown outweighed the benefits. Traffic, parking, pedestrian-friendly street-oriented environment, and local character are among the major barriers identified by the study cities to integrating large-scale retail into the downtown. However, over half of the consumers surveyed agreed that they would shop at large-scale retail on the weekdays if it were available, but less than half of consumers in Tucson and San Diego would shop at large-scale retail on the weekends. Recommendations Three recommendations were suggested to successfully establish and sustain large-scale retail in the downtown. 1. Continue to find creative solutions to parking and traffic barriers. 2. Create a multifunctional, walkable downtown, with amenities to meet most consumers’ needs. 3. Establish retail stores in the downtown that enhance the local character and cater to residents’ needs rather than mostly tourist needs.
