CHamoru Uncertainty: Revitalization Rhetoric in Decolonial Settings

Curtis Jeffrey Jewell (11186172) 27 July 2021 (has links)
Globalization asserts increasing pressure on marginalized cultures and languages. While faced with the pragmatic, often economic, need to communicate via global languages such as English and Chinese, communities of non-dominant language users struggle to maintain or reestablish their own cultural and linguistic practices. This thesis considers three areas of theory to further inquiry into how revitalization contexts may operate within an increasingly borderless world. The specific focus is the CHamoru/Chamorro revitalization context on Guåhan /Guam. First, readers enter the discussion through the conduit of narrative theory which focuses on how legends spanning generations may lend insight into how the dispositions of local inhabitants developed. Second, affect theory is considered to illustrate how narratives are constructed about the future through fear and anxiety. Third, revitalization rhetoric and the emergent theory of translingualism are addressed as they lie at the intersection of narratives about the past and future. The thesis works to initiate conversations between theories which previously worked apart from one another in a context infrequently considered in an effort to establish a foundation for future research and activism on the the island of Guåhan

Nová nábřeží - urbanistická studie přestavby vybraného území podél řeky Svitavy v Brně / New Embankments - Urban Redevelopment of Selected Area along the River Svitava in Brno

Strašilová, Zdeňka January 2013 (has links)
The thesis aims to create a project that will lead towards the formation of a new waterfront area along the Svitava river in Zábrdovice where poor condition of public spaces and the presence of brownfields cause the fact, that this area, located close to the city center, tends to be one of the least visited places along the river. The project deals with the relationship between the waterfront and the city, using the river's citymaking potential for site development and at the same time creates urban study in a way that will maximize the success of waterfront area as a public space. A strategic plan for achieving this objective is created parallel with the design itself.

The Role of Noncredit Continuing Education as a Workforce Revitalization Partner

Combs, Joseph Lincoln 05 May 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the partnership role of noncredit continuing education in revitalizing the workforce during the economic crisis that started in 2008 in selected communities in East Tennessee. This research synthesized meaningful information regarding how the leaders of business and industry perceived the role of noncredit service providers as economic development partners. This qualitative study was conducted using interviews of chamber of commerce officials in 9 of the 10 counties served by Walters State Community College. The participants indicated that they were interested in partnering with the noncredit department to accomplish the goal of helping displaced workers be retrained and employable. In order to meet this goal, the respondents stated that communication is essential. The perceptions of the participants could serve as a catalyst for the community college to implement the specific changes identified by the respondents to the interview questions. The synthesis of data collected from a microcosm of communities in East Tennessee and their relationship with Walters State Community College suggested that there was a perceived role of noncredit continuing education as a workforce revitalization partner. The data suggested 2 barriers negating the effectiveness of this partnership: communication and awareness. This may or may not be universally applicable to other colleges in other communities. Further research could synthesize meaningful information regarding noncredit programs in other communities and identify additional barriers between colleges and business and industry.

“The light in which we are”: Evolution of Indian identity in the schooling of Native Americans in the United States

Capurso, Michael Philip 01 January 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Schooling provided to Native American children in the United States has been portrayed by many native and nonnative scholars as a major factor in undermining traditional languages and cultures, and as playing a role in the perpetuation of generational poverty and marginalization in indigenous communities. Historical accounts also suggest that schools have been settings for the emergence of an intertribal identity and shared political agenda that has been instrumental in generating Red Power activism and maintaining the sovereignty of North America's first nations into the 21 st century. This heuristic study draws upon the ethics of alterity in the philosophy of Emmanuel Levinas to refract testimony from interviews with elders who attended boarding schools in the 1930s and 40s, student activists who staged an occupation of a native college in 2005, and educators working in tribal, public and federal schools, to shed light on native perceptions of how the continuing evolution of Indian identity in teaching and learning is contributing to a revitalization of heritage lifeways.
