Landscape of Ritual: A Necropolis in Algiers LouisianaEJanuary 2007 (has links)
Cities today are suffering from public dependence on the automobile and a tendency to sprawl. The preference afforded to privatized means of mobility and dwelling has diminished opportunities for interaction and exchange in the public realm. The role of public transportation infrastructure must be elevated to reconnect our fractured communities. To achieve this, the identity of place must be translated into infrastructure- something that is by definition a regularized system of support. Combining the utility of infrastructure and a contextual reading of place, stations have a unique opportunity to communicate to the public. One station simultaneously reflects the identity of the regional network, the particular line it is located along, and the neighborhood it serves. An investigation into the need for redesign of transportation infrastructure in New Orleans explores the relationship between the ephemeral experiences of mobility through a city of shifting identity. Stations designed along a local and an express line demonstrate an approach to transportation planning and design that reinforces local identity in order to redefine the city. / Yes

A CASE STUDY INVESTIGATION OF THE DEVELOPMENT AND TREATMENT OF ALTER PERSONALITIES IN DISSOCIATIVE IDENTITY DISORDERBROWN, Ian, Ian.Brown@health.wa.gov.au January 2006 (has links)
Progress in the study and treatment of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) has been hampered by ideological debate regarding its validity. This is particularly the case when patient's suffering from DID also report ritualistic abuse. Part of the difficulty has been that past studies have not established independent checks to assess whether alters are artefacts introduced by therapeutic bias. This study addressed this issue by using independent judges to test the validity of a patient being treated for DID who claimed ritualistic abuse. The judges were 16 clinicians with an average of 21 years experience in their respective disciplines. The study also examined the development and treatment of alter personalities through a detailed examination of case material. The patient had been in continuous therapy with the author and treatment had been conducted using the self psychology model. The study involved three phases.

Visa arbetsvilja : Arbetslinjen som moral, ritual och gruppsolidaritetKarlsson, Petra January 2015 (has links)
The subject of this study is the “work strategy” (arbetslinjen); the idea that work and active measures are preferred over cash benefits. The aim of the study is to investigate why the work strategy, which has been almost undisputed for nearly a century, has had widely changing contents over the years, what measures have been taken and which groups have been included. It also attempts to find out whether there is a correlation between unemployment rates, society and the different aspects of the work strategy. The study is conducted as an idea analysis, mainly of dissertations on the work strategy and public inquiries, and covers five time periods from the 1920’s until today. The theoretical framework is primarily founded on Randall Collins’ theory of morality, social rituals and group solidarity, but also on Erving Goffmans stigma theory. The investigation shows, among other things, that the demands upon the unemployed and the aspects of the work strategy vary according to the unemployment rates. In the light of Collins’ theory high unemployment can be seen as a threat to the group morality, as there is then a greater risk of free-riders. It is moral to work and unmoral to receive cash benefits. To make themselves worthy of the benefits and show morality the unemployed must prove their willingness to work by accepting assigned tasks; measures, which are more characterized by control and discipline during times of high unemployment rates. These measures can be seen as social rituals which serve mainly to strengthen the group’s morality and solidarity. There are stratifications from how moral the individuals act. Working leads to high esteem in society, while unemployment implicates a stigma, as the norms of society are not reached.
