Detection of Man-in-the-middle Attacks Using Physical Layer Wireless Security Techniques

Wang, Le 27 August 2013 (has links)
"In a wireless network environment, all the users are able to access the wireless channel. Thus, if malicious users exploit this feature by mimicking the characteristics of a normal user or even the central wireless access point (AP), they can intercept almost all the information through the network. This scenario is referred as a Man-in-the-middle (MITM) attack. In the MITM attack, the attackers usually set up a rogue AP to spoof the clients. In this thesis, we focus on the detection of MITM attacks in Wi-Fi networks. The thesis introduces the entire process of performing and detecting the MITM attack in two separate sections. The first section starts from creating a rogue AP by imitating the characteristics of the legitimate AP. Then a multi-point jamming attack is conducted to kidnap the clients and force them to connect to the rogue AP. Furthermore, the sniffer software is used to intercept the private information passing through the rogue AP. The second section focuses on the detection of MITM attacks from two aspects: jamming attacks detection and rogue AP detection. In order to enable the network to perform defensive strategies more effectively, distinguishing different types of jamming attacks is necessary. We begin by using signal strength consistency mechanism in order to detect jamming attacks. Then, based on the statistical data of packets send ratio (PSR) and packets delivery ratio (PDR) in different jamming situations, a model is built to further differentiate the jamming attacks. At the same time, we gather the received signal strength indication (RSSI) values from three monitor nodes which process the random RSSI values employing a sliding window algorithm. According to the mean and standard deviation curve of RSSI, we can detect if a rogue AP is present within the vicinity. All these proposed approaches, either attack or detection, have been validated via computer simulations and experimental hardware implementations including Backtrack 5 Tools and MATLAB software suite. The Flat Pod Rogue in Snap Beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)

Kerr, Lynn B. 01 May 1971 (has links)
Segregation patterns of several pod shapes of Phaseolus vulgaris L. cv Tendercrop, were studied. The causes of build-up of off-type pods in a seed stock were examined as were possible means of reversing the buildup. Natural selection factors such as germination, vigor, earliness , and ease of threshing, favored the off-types. Careful, selective milling was found to be an aid to roguing in keeping stock seed as free as possible of the off-type pods.

Salvage archaeology of the Ritsch Site, 35J04 : a late prehistoric village site on the central Rogue River, Oregon

Wilson, Bart McLean 23 February 1979 (has links)
Site 35J04 is located on the south bank of the Rogue River, four miles west of Grants Pass, Oregon. Excavation of the site was conducted in 1976 by Oregon State University under contract to the Corvallis branch of CH2M/Hill. Eight artifact assemblages were distinguished during the analysis of the site. From these assemblages two distinct components were defined. Component I was dated to 460±90 BP. A close affiliation with the coast is evident for this time period from the concaved-base projectile points which are unique to this component. On the coast these concaved-base points are a late development and are usually associated with shell middens. Component II consisted to two circular house pits and the contemporary living surface around them. Carbon 14 dates this component at approximately 1400 BP. The dominant projectile point for this component was small, 9 mm to 18 mm in length, triangular-blade, corner-to-base notched point. An interior adaptation is evident for this component. Light, periodic use of the site was evident between component I and component II. The site had also been used prior to the component II occupation. Cultural debris was present in low frequency to a depth of 1.9 meters below the surface. / Graduation date: 1979

Rogue state e armas nucleares: racionalidade dos atores na aquisição de armas nucleares no pós-guerra fria / Rogue State and nuclear weapons: actor\'s rationality in acquisition of nuclear weapons in the post-cold war

Karen Katarine Mizuta 04 October 2013 (has links)
Since the end of the Cold War, the United States promoted the notion of the existence of \"Rogue States\", designating them as \"new enemies\". However, the term presents many controversies surrounding its definition, especially about the criteria that confer the label to such actors. The irrationality in decision-making and the pursuit of nuclear weapons are presented as the core characteristics of the concept. Through the analysis of American discourses on rogue states, and under the constructivist perspective, one can infer that the speech was used as a way of corroborating the U.S. actions towards these countries, while that shaped the American strategies themselves, once the speech acts are an action itself. Actions taken towards a situation are defined according to the perceptions and meaning the actor will give to it. Thus, the indication of certain countries as Rogue States by the United States served to distinguish among the countries of International System \"those who should be fought\". Some critics of the term argue that the criterion of rationality applied to states like North Korea and Iran is much more rigorous than the one applied to other states, even the USSR during the Cold War. This work intends to evaluate the emergence of the term rogue state and its use by the U.S. government as an official policy. Through two articles, we seek to understand the construction of the rogue state concept, taking into account the constructivist theories, especially the theory of so-called linguistic turn. Since the discussion of irrationality is directly linked to the search for acquiring nuclear weapons - key characteristic of a rogue-, it also intends to evaluate the assumptions for such classification by investigating the nuclear programs of both countries currently at the center of the nuclear debate -Iran and North Korea.

Aboriginal clay figurines from the upper Rogue Valley in southwestern Oregon

Deich, Lyman Patrick 01 January 1980 (has links)
A study of 80 clay figurines from aboriginal sites in the upper Rogue River Valley in southwestern Oregon fails to reveal any connection with other figurines found in the Pacific Northwest and northern California. A preference for animal rather than human representations is demonstrated. The temporal distribution of the figurines is not known, but spatial distribution appears roughly coextensive with territories occupied by the upland Takelma at the time of Euro-American contact during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.

Road networks, timber harvest, and the spread of Phytophthora root rot infestations of Port-Orford-cedar in southwest Oregon

Clark, William C. 01 September 2011 (has links)
Phytophthora lateralis is the causal agent of cedar root rot, a fatal forest pathogen whose principal host is Chamaecyparis lawsoniana (Port-Orford-cedar), a predominantly riparian-restricted endemic tree species of ecological, economical, and cultural importance to coastal Oregon and California. Local scale distribution of P. lateralis is thought to be associated with timber harvest and road-building disturbances. However, knowledge of the landscape-scale factors that contribute to successful invasions of P. lateralis is also important for effective land management of Port-Orford-cedar. P. lateralis is able to infest in wet conditions via stream networks (zoospore) and dry conditions via road networks (resting spore). This study tested the hypothesis that vehicles spread P. lateralis by relating its distribution to traffic intensive, anthropogenic disturbances (i.e. a road network, timber harvest) over a 31-yr period in a 3,910-km² portion of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest in the Siskiyou Mountains of Oregon. Indices of road disturbance (presence/absence, configuration, length, density, road-stream network connectivity) and timber harvest (presence/absence, area, density, frequency) were related to locations of infested cedar populations from a USFS survey dataset using a geographic information system (GIS). About 40% of 934 7th-field catchments were infested with the pathogen. Total road length of the study site was 5,070 km; maximum road density was 8.2 km/km2 and averaged 1.6 km/km² in roaded catchments (n = 766). Timber activities extracted 17,370 ha (2,338 cutting units) of forest across 509 catchments; 345 catchments were cut ≥ twice. Maximum harvest density was 0.92 km²/km² ([mean] = 0.04). Both road networks and timber harvest patchworks were significantly related to cedar root rot heterogeneity. Chi-squared contingency tables showed that infestation rates were 2.2 times higher in catchments with roads compared to roadless catchments and 1.4 times higher in catchments with road-stream intersections compared to those that were unconnected. Infestation was twice as likely in catchments with both harvest and road presence than road presence alone. Single-variable logistic regression showed that a one percent increase in harvest density increased infestation odds 25% and a one-unit (km/km²) increase in road density increased infestation odds 80%. Road and stream network configuration was also important to pathogen distribution: 1) uninfested catchments are most likely to be spatially removed from infested, roaded catchments, 2) only 11% of 287 roaded catchments downstream of infested, roaded catchments were uninfested, and 3) only 12% of 319 catchments downstream of infested catchments were uninfested. Road networks and timber harvest patchworks appear to reduce landscape heterogeneity by providing up-catchment and down-catchment access to host populations by linking pathogenic materials to the stream network. Timber harvest data suggest that while infestation risk to Port-Orford-cedar populations remains high, management policies may have curbed infestation risk in timber-harvested catchments; if this is a result of specific P. lateralis mitigation policies adopted in the late 1980's or broader, region-wide conservation policies (i.e. the Northwest Forest Plan) is yet unclear. / Graduation date: 2012
