The Role and Function of Arts Exhibitions in the National University Libraries in Taiwan.Lu, Ming-fang 02 August 2005 (has links)
The mission of university libraries have been taking to support or reinforce academic researches and teaching, however the newly established exhibition space for the arts exhibitions are one of the services which is increased recently. For the needs of adapting to the external environment, the visual exhibitions have been transformed into the digital ones. The purpose of the study is to examine the role and function of the exhibitions held in the national university libraries in Taiwan. The research centers on the various conditions in the environments of the arts exhibitions that held in the national university libraries in recent.
This study contains three major parts: the first part discusses the experiences from museums of holding exhibitions and the theoretical frame about the ¡§university library exhibitions¡¨. The second part is the comparison of the different organizations which hold exhibitions, such as museums, public libraries, and arts centers, in addition to the integration of three exhibition models by university libraries. The third part analyzes the common elements of library exhibitions and the types of exhibitions by applying the management SWOT approach.
The findings of this study indicate that the ¡§university library exhibitions¡¨ possess the same functional roles as the traditional museums in the aspects of education, culture, researches and entertainment. Different types of exhibitions reveal these functions by different standards. The study also discovered that the superiority of the ¡§university library exhibitions,¡¨ was mostly in the aspects of education, culture, and researches. As far as the aspect of entertainment, though been admitted as one function, is not particularly addressed. In the future, some efforts might be added to university library exhibitions, such as the playing of a public role, the development of the audience and readers, also the tendency of being a cultural industry.
The study concludes with the following suggestions: preparing proper library exhibition policies, expanding the function of ¡§exhibition¡¨ to the level of performance, promoting the inter-library exhibitions and exhibition loans, transforming the charge-free exhibitions into a cultural business, re-utilizing the space in libraries, considering the benefit of the corporation among different departments in the campus, extending the sensation of aesthetics into communities and developing the library audience based the idea of life-long continuing education.

Contractual discretionary powers and the essentialia of price and rental in the South African law of sale and lease – a jurisprudential and comparative analysisSulaiman, Mubarak Allie January 2013 (has links)
Doctor Legum - LLD / This thesis concerns the tension that exists between the principles of certainty and freedom of contract (which includes the notion of contractual discretionary powers) and how this tension impacts on the requirement that agreement must be reached on the price and rental in contracts of sale and lease, respectively. The matter at issue is whether South African law should recognise the validity of contracts
of sale at a reasonable price and lease and rental respectively, and/or at a unilaterally determined price or rental as suggested in an obiter dictum of the Supreme Court of Appeal in NBS Boland Bank v One Berg River Drive and Others; Deeb and Another v ABSA Bank Ltd; Friedman v Standard Bank of South Africa Ltd 1999 (4) SA 928 (SCA) and in an obiter dictum of the then Appellate Division in Genac Properties JHB (Pty) Ltd v NBC Administrators CC 1992 (1) SA 566 (AD). Currently, the law requires that the price (in the case of sale) or the rental (in the case of lease) must be certain, in the sense that it is either ascertained or objectively ascertainable. The price is ascertainable if there is agreement between the contractants on an external standard in light of which the price may be ascertained objectively without further reference to the contractants: Westinghouse Brake & Equipment (Pty) Ltd v Bilger Engineering (Pty) Ltd 1986 (2) SA 555 (A).
The obiter dicta in the One Berg River and Genac cases suggest that an agreement to a reasonable price or rental or to unilaterally determined price or rental meets this requirement. The basis for both obiter dicta can be found in the principles of freedom and sanctity of contract that form the cornerstones of the South African law of contract. The conceptual framework of public policy forms the outer limits of both freedom and sanctity of contract. The thesis considers whether a development in South African law that recognises the validity of a contract of sale or lease at a price or rental determined unilaterally by a contractant or at a reasonable price or rental, respectively, is contrary to public policy as informed by the values embodied in the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa 1996 iv and whether it would promote consensus and certainty, which are foundational principles of South African law of contract. Consideration is also be given to the question whether such
a development is defensible in law, and desirable as a matter of policy and practice.

A Comparison of Satisfaction Ratings of School Psychologists in RTI versus non-RTI School DistrictsBade-White, Priscilla Anna January 2012 (has links)
Teachers' satisfaction with school psychological services has been studied for more than 30 years. Few to no studies, however, are available that provide data about the perceptions of school psychologists regarding their perceived value within different service delivery models, particularly those involving Response to Intervention (RTI) models. The present study was designed to determine if any differences existed between the satisfaction ratings of school psychologists in RTI versus non-RTI school districts as self-reported by teachers and school psychologists. General education teachers, special education teachers, and school psychologists from RTI and non-RTI school districts across the United States were surveyed about their satisfaction with school psychological services using the School Psychology Perceptions Survey (SPPS, 2004). Responses were evaluated for significance using Kruskal-Wallis and in the event significance was found, Tukey's HSD was used to determine where the difference occurred. Both special and general education teachers reported statistically significant differences in their satisfaction ratings of school psychological services. Teachers from RTI school districts reported greater satisfaction levels with school psychological services when compared to teachers from non-RTI districts. School psychologists who worked in RTI school districts reported higher job satisfaction ratings than those who worked in non-RTI school districts. In terms of teachers' and school psychologists' satisfaction ratings of school psychological services, the results suggest that RTI school districts provide a more satisfying model of school psychological service delivery compared to non-RTI school district models.

Middle school principal's perceptions of the role and function of the assistant principalshipPhillips, Donald L. 01 January 2007 (has links) (PDF)
This study investigates and compares the skills, knowledge, and activities engaged in as a principal and an assistant principal and their relationship to the preparation of an aspiring middle school principal. Since little information exists, it is possible that no similar investigations have been previously completed. This study also compares the perceptions of principals with the expectations of school districts as to the required skills, knowledge, and activities of principals and assistant principals as delineated in their job descriptions. This study includes a survey of 104 middle school principals who were systematically selected from 1,228 active, public, non-charter, junior high/intermediate/middle schools in California. Surveys were mailed during the last week in October, 2006 and were postmarked for return between October 31 and December 20, 2006. A field test among ten selected principals was completed to establish the validity of the instrument, improve questions, format, and/or rating scales. Positivistic Educational Administration Theory provides the conceptual framework that informs this quantitative study. The study is cross-sectional, utilizing a self-administered questionnaire. Responses were gathered and averaged by category. Since the survey includes Likert scales, factor analysis was used as the statistical procedure to validate the questionnaire. The data provided by this study should be of interest to aspiring administrators, middle school principals and assistant principals, school district administrators, higher education professors of educational administration and other administrator preparation programs.
