Previous issue date: 2013 / This thesis seeks to establish a connection between the Brazilian nonfiction novel from the seventies and the contemporary book-length work of literary journalism. The former was condemned as a spurious literary form by literary criticism, for its “referentiality” and its intention to “expose the truth” about social reality were considered a mere consequence of censorship and political repression by the military dictatorship; it would have no place in a democratic regime. The latter continues to attract reporters who crave to escape from the "dictatorship of objectivity" they are subjected to when working for newspapers; it is described by Journalism researchers as a successful combination of “reporting techniques” and “stylistic resources” borrowed from literature. Through the analysis of the books Aracelli, meu amor (José Louzeiro, 1976), Corações sujos (Fernando Morais, 2000) and Abusado: o dono do morro Dona Marta (Caco Barcellos, 2003), this study intends to show that both – the nonfiction novel from the seventies and the new pieces of narrative reportage – rely on “fictionalising reality”. For this purpose, it adopts a concept of mimesis as narrative configuration or the creation of a fictional time experience, proposed by authors such as Paul Ricoeur, Käte Hamburger, and Mikhail Bakhtin, among others.

Previous issue date: 2011-04-25 / FAPEAM - Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas / This work is an analysis of identity construction processes in the novels of Milton Hatoum. The assertion of identity has been an issue widely discussed within the field of cultural studies, due to the recent fragmentation of its models and the emergence of several new ascendants systems of identity. In the novels of Hatoum, this problem will manifest itself through the elimination of regionalism, which dilutes the references to identify, from memory, which search all the time to order the past, as well as the various dilemmas bandied about in the course of the narrative: the uncertainty as to the origin, the condition of foreign and immigrant, the family relations, the ethical values of East and West, those issues that will focus primarily on the characters of the plots, especially the narrators, the brothers Omar and Yaqub, of Dois irmãos, and Mundo, of Cinzas do Norte, for whom questions about the identity will become crucial in defining the paths followed by each of them.

A influência da moda na literatura: a caracterização da personagem de ficção nos romances brasileiros do século XIX / The influence of fashion on literature: the portrait of the fictional character in Brazilian novels in the 19th centuryMarli Gomes de Araujo 29 August 2018 (has links)
O período refere-se de 1850 a 1890 / This research studies the influence of clothing and fashion in the characterization of the figures in 19th Century Brazilian fiction, analyzing novels like Cinco minutos (1856), A Viuvinha (1857), Lucíola (1862), A pata da gazela (1870) and Senhora (1875), of José de Alencar; Iaiá Garcia (1878), Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (1881), Dom Casmurro (1899) and Quincas Borba (1891), Machado de Assis; and O cortiço (1890), Aluísio Azevedo. A pena do cronista: a presença das crônicas nos romances machadianos / The chronicler\'s pen: the contribution of the chronicle genre in the roman of Machado de AssisDário Ferreira Sousa Neto 04 March 2015 (has links)
The Chroniclers Pen has as a proposal to highlight the contribution of the chronicle genre in the fictional production of Machado de Assis. Taking into consideration the fact that there are two distinct phases in the carioca novelists production - already exaustively demonstrated by literary criticism on Machado - this analysis will be based on the hypothesis that the change in his literary form from The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas (1881) onwards is intimately related to compositional procedures developed in his chronicle work. The central objective of this thesis is, therefore, the better understanding - from the structural analysis of the novel The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas and the chronicles Comentários da Semana (Weeks Comments), Crônicas de O Futuro (Chronicles of the Future), Ao Acaso (By Chance), História de Quinze Dias (History of Fifteen Days), História de Trinta Dias (History of Thirty Days) and Notas Semanais Weekly Notes) - of the fictional modes of production undertaken by the author. Thereby, drawing on Gerard Genettes narratology particularly on his concepts of metalepsis and the five functions of the narrator regency, testimonial, narrative, communication and ideological this analysis developed the structural comprehension of the four novels that are part of his so-called first phase The Hand and the Glove (1874); Helen (1876); Mistress Garcia (1878); and the three later The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas; Philosopher or Dog? (1891) and Dom Casmurro (1899) in order to highlight their particular formal aspects and observe the contribution the chronicle genre gave to the production of Machados novels. Based on the analysis of the first texts written in prose and published in Marmota Fluminense newspaper, we seek to understand the ways Machado de Assis makes use of rhetorical procedures with the aid of theoretical apparatus developed by Oliver Reboul, Chaim Perelman and Lucie Olbrechts-Tyteca. In order for us to understand the different formal devices of composition in the chronicles, we make use of the concepts of \"controversial speech\", \"dialogism\" and \"polyphony\" with reference to the Bakhtin Circles works, on Dominique Maingueneaus concept of corporeality, on Paul Zumthors performativity and, finally, on Wolfgang Iser and Paul Ricoeurs implicated author. In particular chapter we deal with the concept of rumor developed by Jean-Noël Kapferer, examining both the conceptualization and the use of this procedure in chronicle as well as the fictional feature rumor applied in the novel Lord Taciturn in three perspectives: the rumor of the alleged perpetrator, the rumor of romance and the rumor produced by the readings of the novel. Finally, in order to establish the differences between the modes of production of the novels and the chronicles, we use the concepts of power, discipline, panopticon, truth, archaeological method, genealogical method, perspectivism and arbitrariness of Michel Foucault and the concepts of schizoanalysis, significant despotic, rhizomatic multiplicities and arborescent multiplicities of Guilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. This distinction allowed us to realize that in the chronicles, the chronicler makes a rich use of these procedures as a way to question the place of production of truth discourses in scientific, political and religious institutions of empire of Brazil, and from this conclusion, how it constitutes this discursive subject as an author in the three novels of the second phase. Machado de Assis, through these procedures, makes that place of production of truth his object of analysis.

Idealized world of Malory's "Morte Darthur" : a study of the elements of myth, allegory, and symbolism in the secular and religious milieux of Arthurian RomanceWhitaker, Muriel A. I. January 1970 (has links)
Towards the end of the Middle Ages, Sir Thomas Malory synthesized the diverse elements of British chronicle history, Celtic myth, French courtoisie, and Catholic theology which over a period of six hundred years or more had gathered about the legendary figure of King Arthur. Furthermore, Malory presented in definitive form the kind of idealized milieu that later writers in English came to regard as romantic. Malory's Morte Darthur presents dramatically the activities of a mythic aristocratic society living in a golden age. It preserves the "history" of a British king who defeats the Emperor of Rome and establishes an empire stretching from Ireland and Scandinavia to the Eastern Mediterranean. It portrays the adventures of heroic knights whose prowess is inspired by idealized ladies and whose achievements are helped or hindered by such supernatural
agents as fays, magicians, giants, dwarfs, angels and devils. The actions of the knights conform to a ritualistic pattern of quest and combat determined by stereotyped chivalric conventions and performed in a symbol-studded environment. Colours, numbers, costumes, metals, arms, armour, and horses have symbolic significances which may be hierarchic, emotive or moral. Castles and perilous forests represent the antithetical values of security and danger, peace and combat, civilization and primitivism, love and hate. In this antipodal environment occur encounters which often adumbrate a struggle between forces of good and forces of evil.
In the religious milieu of the Grail quest, elements of the secular milieu are adopted for the purpose of expressing truths of Catholic faith and morality. The Grail Knight's search for Corbenic is an allegory of the soul's search for God. Arms and armour, dress and colours, animals and plants have symbolic significances drawn from Biblical exegesis and Christian art.
The unifying element in the historical, romantic and religious milieux is the quest motif; it is the means by which the ideals of the Malorian world are revealed. The historical quest for the crown of Rome shows Malory's view of sovereignty and the ideal of the good king. The romantic quest for fame and fair ladies shows his view of chivalry and the ideal of the good knight. The spiritual quest for the Holy Grail shows his view of religion and the ideal of the good Christian. It is a measure of Malory's art that the wishfulfilling dream world of romance projects an illusion of reality. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

La hierarchie et l’adaptation : comparaison entre Yvain et Ywain and GawainMcKie, Shannon A. 05 1900 (has links)
When comparing Ywain and Gawain with its source, Chretien de Troyes' Yvain. many
critics concentrate on the dramatic omissions and reductions made by the anonymous English
adapter. However, the more subtle differences between the two Arthurian romances also deserve
attention. Since the goal of medieval adapters of secular texts was to rethink and reinvent their
sources, these changes could reveal further aspects of the originality of Ywain and Gawain.
which is generally considered a sophisticated work in its own right.
With this study, I hope to demonstrate that some of the differences in the Middle English
adaptation may signify an effort on the part of the adapter to present his own vision of society
and hierarchy. While it is not possible to situate all the characters on a social scale, the probable
hierarchical relation between many of them can be established based on their lineage, tide or
social position. The present analysis examines modifications in the interaction between some of
these characters—due to the limits of this study, I treat only the cases where at least one female
character is concerned—and the role of hierarchical submission. I explore examples from two
perspectives: that of the characters of lower rank, whose subordination to social superiors is a
basic element of social order, and that of the characters of higher rank, whose standing implies
both their own authority and the submission of their inferiors.
I found that the English poet diminished or omitted many examples that do not respect
hierarchy in Yvain. creating the impression of a more hierarchical society in the adaptation.
That overall impression is not changed by the fact that the adapter also introduced or amplified
other exceptions to the hierarchy, for they are not of an extreme nature and occur only in a
limited context. In fact, these additions seem to follow a logical pattern as well, presenting the
image of a society in which rank and power are linked. Consequently, they too may be
interpreted as part of a coherently modified version of society and hierarchy created by the
author of Ywain and Gawain. / Arts, Faculty of / French, Hispanic, and Italian Studies, Department of / Graduate

Private disclosure : an investigation of mobile phone lateral surveillance in romantic relationshipsNgcongo, Mthobeli 22 October 2014 (has links)
M.A. (Fundamental Communication) / Communication technologies like the mobile phone often present a double-edged sword in romantic relationships. While the mobile phone can enhance communication, it can simultaneously present a source of conflict. But through the use of a rule-based system, romantic partners can minimise conflict. This study investigated mobile phone usage rules that are negotiated by adolescents and young adults in their romantic relationships and also how these rules have been perceived to affect the romantic relationship. Of particular focus were rules that pertained specifically to the management of personal privacy boundaries by partners through the appendage of the mobile phone. The dialectic framework of Communication Privacy Management presented a nuanced lens from which to investigate the surveillance dimension of mobile phone appropriation in romantic relationships. The rise of peer-to-peer monitoring offered a unique point of departure that makes understanding the manifestation of this form surveillance in romantic relationships relevant. Findings conducted from surveys and interviews indicate that the negotiation of rules for appropriate mobile phone rules is indeed crucial to not only minimising conflict in romantic relationships but also enhancing trust and respect in the dyad. So important were trust and harmony that partners are even willing to allow their implicit rules and understandings of privacy to be superseded by a pursuit for these relational qualities. In addition to this, partners preferred not to resolves relational arguments over the phone because of the impetuous and intrusive nature of the mobile phone persona. While some rules remained constant, the quantitative survey showed that rules were evolutionary in nature as the relationships grew. The subsequent qualitative interviews also confirmed this finding.
