The horse in Roman society

Lawrie, Margaret Ruth 30 November 2005 (has links)
This dissertation presents an investigation of the place of the horse in Roman society, within the context of its roles as equus publicus, which derived ultimately from that of the cavalry mount, and race-horse. Consideration of the ceremonial role of the horse provides a clearer understanding of the value placed upon horses and horsemanship in the Roman world, thus permitting inferences to be drawn regarding the role played by the horse in the development of the equester ordo. Evidence is drawn from both literary and archaeological sources to shed light on the management and training of the horses of equestrian Rome. Chariot racing is also re-examined from the perspective of its equine players, and evidence is drawn from various sources to provide a more complete picture of the Roman horse-racing industry as a social structure. The importance of the racehorse in Roman society is examined and the symbolism of the victorious horse as represented in Roman art is discussed. / Classics & Modern European Languages / M.A. (Ancient Languages and Cultures)

Négocier à Rome au XVIIIe siècle : ambassade et ambassadeurs du Roi-Très-Chrétien dans la cité pontificale (1724-1757) / Negociating in Eighteen century Rome : embassy and ambassadors of the « Roi très chrétien » (1724-1757)

Pialoux, Albane 28 November 2009 (has links)
Eighteen century Popes have become « pères humiliés » whom European crowns are putting under their will while showing apparent great respect and devotion. From Unigenitus on, under the growing influence of « Gallicanismes », studying the negociation itself in the Pontifical court of Rome, with a multiplicity of partners involved, is a good step towards a better comprehension of both the Papacy decline and the french diplomatical pattern in Rome. This orientation also offers an opportunity to appreciate this evolution under the perception of european crowns, with Rome agreeing or disagreeing with new political and ecclesiastical compromises without any possibility of modifying them. A growing Theater Scene, Rome is, less and less, a true place of decision. With the influence of the Pope on international relationships becoming thiner and thiner, the art of representation tends to become the main duty for Ambassadors, as, nowhere much as in the pontifical court of Rome, the two main duties of an Ambassador, negociating and representating their own King, may find a more significant and broader place.

Furor and insania. Designs, treatments and uses of "madness" in the Roman West.

Ortiz, Pierre-Henri 08 December 2017 (has links)
This work surveys conceptions and treatments of mental illness in the Roman Empire until the dawn of Late Antiquity. We investigate legal and medical sources and examine different uses of the idea of “madness” in wide ranging discourse from this period in philosophy, tragedy, comedy, history, as well as in legal or political rhetoric. The historical approach, inspired by functionalist social theories, is designed to further understand the autonomy, and/or analyze the encounters of each of these areas of discourse as they deal with madness. The underlying objective is to extricate the structure of madness concept as a matter of history and to clarify connotations and semantic references in the use of the many terms that refer to madness in Latin sources. The work also provides a preliminary investigation for the study of if, and how, the Christianizing of the western provinces of the Roman Empire influenced conceptions, treatments and uses of “madness” in Late Antiquity.
