Assembling Places

Algaze Beato, Cristina 16 September 2002 (has links)
A study on the possibilities of place-making by systematically separating the traditional responsibilities of the wall as an architectural element. Walls usually serve several simultaneous structural, enveloping and distributional duties. The project consists in designing a house where four distinct but interacting types of walls are present, each with a well defined duty. Each necessary but deliberately insufficient in itself: one provides the structure; another is a continuous skin for enclosure and partition; still another solely weatherproofs and, finally, one filters the light and grants privacy. The four walls function as layers with the capacity of interplay, while retaining their identity. The places resulting from these boundaries assert their presence and function in view of the character bestowed by the form of their enclosure. The choice of material, assembly, texture and color in unique correspondence to each boundary's usefulness, complete the experience of the inhabitant and architectural form comes about. / Master of Architecture

Beyond the Glass: Examining Wine Tasting Room Profitability Using the 4Ps of the Marketing Mix

Adams, Meredith Elaine 14 June 2016 (has links)
Recent exponential increases in attendance at wine tasting rooms resulted in growing research in this subject area as producers seek to learn more about wine tasting room customers and identify ways to capitalize on additional revenue-generating opportunities. Direct wine sales are big business with $3.4 billion in sales in the United States in 2010. Research has shown that small and medium-sized wineries have become financially dependent on direct sales linked to wine tasting rooms with an average of 70 percent of winery sales coming from the tasting room. With limited sources outlining best practices within wine marketing, there is a clear need to identify and classify the literature on this topic. This research applies a marketing theoretical approach using the 4Ps (product, place, price, and promotion) of the marketing mix in conjunction with a comprehensive citation-based global literature review, with the goal of assessing those factors, if any, which may impact wine tasting room profitability. Our findings highlight key differences in individual wine tasting room marketing mix strategies which emphasize the need to understand consumer tastes and preferences for the wine tasting experience. Research shows that investing in the product and promotion of the wine tasting room has a positive impact on profitability. Key profit drivers include investing in branding, tasting room staff, and aggressively pursuing word-of-mouth recommendations to enhance wine tasting room profitability. / Master of Science

Fler- eller enkelbäddssalar i vården? : En litteraturöversikt av patienters upplevelser / Shared hospital rooms or single hospital rooms in care? : A literature review of patients’ experiences

Westin, Elin, Mallouppas, Alexia January 2016 (has links)
Background: The Swedish population is increasing. This results in an increasing demand on the healthcare. The patient is the center of caring and the concept of being a patient implies suffering or being perseverant in suffering. The nurses have several areas of main responsibilities to attend to the patients in the best possible ways. The healthcare environment have a great impact on the patient's ability to recover from their illness. It is therefore important to know how the patients experience the healthcare environment in the hospital rooms. Aim: To describe patients experiences of the healthcare environment in single and multiple hospital rooms. Method: This essay is a literature review based on twelve original articles. The articles were collected by the use of the databases CINAHL Complete and Pubmed. The articles were analysed using Fribergs method of literature reviews. Results: The results were divided into six categories: The experience of a companionship, Activities and sparetime, Support from other patients, Integrity in relation to other patients, The effect on sleep and The experience of safety. The patients’ experiences of being cared for in a single or multiple hospital room varied. Some patients preferred multiple hospital rooms where they could socialize with other patients while others preferred single hospital rooms because of the need for privacy. Discussion: The results were discussed in the light of the model SAUK and other studies.

Battlefords Union Hospital operating room suite efficiency review

Neveling, Christoffel Hermanus 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA (Business Management))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Given the increase in the cost of health care, economic considerations have drawn more and more interest over the last decade. Facilities are faced with the challenge to reduce costs while maintaining productivity. The Operating Room (OR) represents a significant opportunity to reduce expenses and improve efficiency. With the development of ambulatory or day surgery, minimally invasive procedures and the decline in admissions to hospitals the management of the OR suite needs re-evaluation. The Battlefords Union Hospital has a four room OR suite that performs a mixture of both inhospital and day surgeries. The current OR suite efficiency is determined by its adherence to the annual budget. A literature study was conducted with the focus on OR efficiency and in particular Patient Outcome and OR Management. Other issues included Perioperative Information systems and OR design. A survey was conducted in the OR suite and responses obtained from OR staff were evaluated. The survey included questions on patient experiences, procedural times, case scheduling, support, communication, quality measures and OR efficiency. The goals of this project was not to do an extensive statistical analysis of OR data. A limited study of OR suite data was presented to highlight relevant OR efficiency indicators. A summary of the findings and recommendations for improvement of the Battlefords Union Hospital OR suite’s efficiency, concludes the report.

Modélisations des systèmes d'assistance à la réverbération régénératifs / Modelling of regenerative reverberation enhancement systems

Rouch, Jérémy 03 July 2013 (has links)
Reverberation enhancement systems (RES) are electro-acoustic devices installed in auditoria to adapt the listening conditions according to the performances. In order to design these systems before their installation, this work deals with the development, the implementation and the testing of prediction tools of the effect of these systems on the acoustic characteristics of a room, by focusing on diagonal regenerative RES. The first proposed tool is based on a systemic approach and numerical simulations. This tool, whose principle is already described in the literature, is here enhanced by the use of an algorithm that automatically fine-tunes the system parameters. As numerical simulations require detailed 3D models of rooms and high computation times, this tool is not compatible with the responsiveness needed for a preliminary design stage. With this in mind, two other models based on the diffuse field assumptions are also developed to predict the action of a RES. One of them is also based on a systemic approach but it uses the stochastic geometric theory of room acoustics instead of numerical simulations. The other model is based on a simple energetic approach. The confrontation of the results given by these two models with the results given by the model based on numerical simulations has been carried out in five rooms considering the effect of a RES on six common room acoustic criteria. It appeared that these two models lead to prediction errors similar to those obtained with the Sabine or Eyring’s formula, or the Barron and Lee’s revised theory applied in a room without RES. In the same time, the study of the effect of a RES used to enhance the coupling between two poor coupled room is presented. It is shown that this particular use of a RES actually increases the coupling effect, and that this effect can be correctly described and predicted by an energetic model developed here. It is also shown by numerical simulations that this system can balance the listening conditions between two coupled rooms.

Finite element analysis of aerosol particle deposition on surfaces inside a clean room

Sannes, Kevin Markle, 1964- January 1989 (has links)
Aerosol particle deposition rates on surfaces inside a clean room are predicted by a model developed to account for particle convection, diffusion and sedimentation. External forces acting on the particle also influence the rate of deposition. Both electrical charge build up on product surfaces and temperature gradients in the air near the product surface are known to effect the rate of deposition. A description of an electrostatic and thermophoretic force on the particle is thus included in the model. The equations governing the particle deposition process and the approach used in obtaining a solution to these equations are both described. A finite element numerical solution is detailed, followed by a description of the electrostatic force models. Finally, predictions of the model are presented with a comparison to data experimentally obtained by other researchers.
