Les serviteurs de Navarre à Tours dans la seconde moitié du seizième siècle / The servants of the household of Navarre in Tours in the second half of the sexteenth century

Barker Harai, Claire Taylor 18 December 2014 (has links)
The early modern members of the royal family of Navarre have been the subjects of many academic studies, but the servants of their household have not yet been studied in depth. This dissertation aims to examine the 106 members of the household of Navarre whose presence is noted in notarial acts from 16th century Tours, stored in the Departemental Archives of Indre-et-Loire. These texts, combined with other manuscripts (royal accounts, letters, receipts, etc.) from Pau and from Paris, allow us to examine the lives of these individuals, how they were related, and what roles they played in the royal households of Navarre. Using source documents, we observe the structures and the internal dynamics of the « Navarrese milieu » that existed in the city of Tours, and its « heart » composed of a handful of families who primarily served the households of Jeanne d’Albret and of Henri de Navarre, the future king Henri IV

Domus regis: a Casa Real portuguesa no Rio de Janeiro (1808-1821) / Domus regis: the portuguese Royal Household in Rio de Janeiro (1808-1821)

Santiago Silva de Andrade 14 April 2010 (has links)
Lusitanian monarchy's fundamental institution, the portuguese Royal Household covered in it's space hundreds of servants, men and women from different social backgrounds. After the transfer of the portuguese court to Rio de Janeiro, prince regent d. João restructured his domestic universe, setting here, the same way as in Portugal, all the required departments for the correct execution of everyday tasks of his House: stable, kitchen, pantry service, câmara, purchase of food articles, etc. This thesis intends to analyze the conformation of the portuguese Royal Household in Rio de Janeiro, between the years of 1808 and 1821. Will be analyzed here the Royal Household's organizacional structure; the disputes among the recent immigrants domestic servants and the Rio de Janeiro's inhabitants; the peculiar paying mechanisms of the royal domestic world; the forms of access to the Royal Household; and the financial structure of the portuguese Royal Household. Within a broader framework, we tried to relate the King's House to the others established powers on the court of Rio de Janeiro, in order to demonstrate that the monarchy's domestic space was also a relevant institution on the assembling of the royal administration in America and, consequently, on the transformation of an historically colonial area in the center of the portuguese empire.

The court and household of James I of Scotland, 1424-1437

Scott, Nicola R. January 2007 (has links)
This thesis examines the importance of the royal court and household in Scotland during the reign of James I (1424-37). The medieval royal court and household has received little concentrated attention in recent Scottish studies. However, a significant body of published research exists elsewhere in Britain and Europe which shows the importance of this arena for other kingdoms at this time. These studies have emphasised how the court and household was an important centre for politics and culture in the medieval period, indicating how a similar study of the Scottish evidence is essential for a fuller understanding of James I’s reign. Through a variety of sources, the composition of James’s household and court affinity has been examined. It is evident from this that James lacked an appropriate body of companions and high-status administrative officers for a medieval ruler and this was to have significant consequences for his reign. Additionally, by looking at some of the cultural aspects of the royal court, in particular the architecture, literature and religion, a clearer picture of the socio-political dynamics and tensions of James I’s reign emerges. In contrast to the generally held view of James as a politically successful, strong and active monarch for much of his reign, this study instead indicates a king who failed to establish an attractive and useful court and household that could be exploited for royal political gain. With his failure to establish a suitable court and household, James was a king incomplete and it is the contention that this contributed significantly to the king’s assassination.

Pensions et pensionnaires de la monarchie : de la grâce royale au système de redistribution de l'Etat au XVIIIe siècle / Pensions & pensioners of the French monarchy : from royal favour to State redistribution system in the eighteenth century

Carré, Benoît 06 April 2018 (has links)
Pensions & pensioners of the French monarchy : from royal favour to State redistribution system in the eighteenth century The issue of State pensions and pensioners is tackled on the basis of a corpus of sources found among the archives of the Maison du Roi (Royal Household), the Trésor royal (Royal Treasury) and the Comité des pensions (Pensions Committee) of the Assemblée nationale constituante (National Constituent Assembly). An analysis of the attribution and distribution mechanisms of the Royal pensions reveals the contradictions of the Ancien Régime monarchy: the preservation of ancient traditions versus the requirements of a modern State. The repeated and unsuccessful attempts to reform and rationalize an object of expenditure whose weight has not ceased to weigh on the royal finances is demonstrated here. The thesis invites us to question these forms of distribution used by the power as an instrument of political and social domination, but whose financial and accounting aspects have been unequally controlled. The history of the royal pensions management in the 18th century offers a particularly well-documented case study that illustrates the development of modern bureaucracy. It reveals an inventive administration in its way of reforming State pensions while constrained by conflicting interests of the regime. It was finally the political crisis of 1789 that clarified and reformed a system of royal liberalities that became the symbol of abuses of the Court in the eyes of public opinion. In 1790, by separating Court pensions from State pensions, by creating an entitlement to pension for State servants where the Ancien Régime knew only a system of rewards based on custom and clientelism, the Comité des pensions of the Assemblée nationale constituante laid the foundation for the first pension system of the State Public Service.
