Effects of oscillatory forcing on hydrologic systems under extreme conditions: a mathematical modeling approachFonley, Morgan Rae 01 August 2015 (has links)
At the large watershed scale, we emphasize the effects of flow through a river network on streamflow under dry conditions. An immediate consequence of assuming dry conditions is that evapotranspiration causes flow in the river network to exhibit oscillations. When all links in the river network combine their flow patterns, the oscillations interact in ways that change the timing and amplitude of the streamflow waves at the watershed outlet. The geometric shape of the river network is particularly important, so we develop an analytic solution for streamflow which emphasizes that importance.
Doing hydrology backward is a strategy recently developed by several researchers to deal with uncertainty in measurements of forcing terms applied to hydrologic models. The strategy has also been applied to resolve the assumption of homogeneity on realistic catchments that exhibit many heterogeneous properties. In this work, we demonstrate hydrology in the backward direction applied to two examples: using streamflow at the catchment scale to determine runoff at the hillslope scale and using the hillslope runoff to infer the applied evapotranspiration forcing under the assumption of dry conditions. In order to work across scales, we utilize the analytic solution for streamflow at the outlet of a river network. At the hillslope scale, we develop a soil model to create fluxes consistent with observed soil processes.

Determination Of Runoff Coefficient Of Basins By Using Geographic Information SystemsAcinan, Sezen 01 May 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Turkey has very different geomorphologic, hydrologic and climatic conditions, so the runoff coefficient should be different from one basin to another. But only one constant value, which is 0.37, is being used for all the basins in Turkey. In this thesis, monthly, seasonal and annual runoff coefficients of 48 sub-basins in western and southern part of Anatolia are determined by using synchronous and average rainfall, runoff data of 26 year record period. Their temporal and spatial distributions are investigated. The relationship between the basin parameters and the runoff coefficient are also examined. Some of the basins have unrealistic large runoff coefficients, therefore excluded from the analyses.
The basin boundaries and parameters are determined by using Geograhic Information System (GIS), and areal average precipitations are found by a program written in visual basic language that uses ArcObjects. The Box-Cox transformed data are used in regression analysis. There are a number of dams in the region, which affect the natural flow. Such streams are found and their sub-basins are not used in the analyses. The results revealed that there is not a strong the relationship between the basin parameters and annual and seasonal runoff coefficients for the whole region, but there are significant relations between them for some basins.

Drenážní systémy v ČR a jejich vliv na vodní režim povodí / Artificial drainage systems in the Czech Republic and their impact on catchment water regimeČERVONYJ, Jakub January 2015 (has links)
In this diploma thesis the issue of drainage system influence on water regime of catchment area was solved. The aim of the thesis was to analyze influence of drainage system on specific catchment area using mathematical, hydrological and statistical methods. In the teoretical part, the thesis describes the issue of drainage (specifically the drainage system of area of the Czech republic) and the influence of drainage system on water regime. In the practical part an analysis of the catchment area of Kopaninský creek and subcatchment areas P6, P52 and P53 was performed. At all of those areas, certains parts are dewatered by subsurface systematic drainage system, those parts are described in detail. The runoff coefficients and specific runoff from each subcatchment areas in different time interval were calculated and observed. Runoff separation and precipitation-runoff situation analysis were performed. The results are evaulated in the chapter Results and Discussion.

The influence of infiltration and rain intensity on an urban pluvial flood model : A case study of a catchment in Malmö municipality / Infiltrationens och regnintensitetens påverkan på en urban översvämningsmodellvan Heek, Emma, Persson, Ellen January 2023 (has links)
Urban pluvial floods have become more and more common in Europe. These floods have resulted in high costs for society, increasing the interest in conducting hydraulic flood models. This in order to prepare and minimise the consequences of these flood events. The study looked at how changing the temporal distribution of the rain using six type events, and whether using the runoff coefficient method or infiltration method in such a model, would impact the flood extent and flood depth for a 100-year return period rain event. The model is made using MIKE+ for a catchment area in Malmö, Sweden. The results showed that the runoff coefficient method generally overestimated both the flood extent and the maximum flood depth compared to the infiltration method. The differences were however very small between the methods, only between 6-7% over the catchment. For the six different temporal distributions for the rain event, the conclusion could be drawn that the flood extent follows a clear pattern from largest to smallest while no individual type event could be seen to give the deepest flood. Instead, this varied across the different evaluation points.

Residual Waxes for Water HarvestingFink, Dwayne H. 16 April 1977 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1977 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 15-16, 1977, Las Vegas, Nevada / This study was undertaken to compare the water harvesting potential of several residual waxes with that of refined paraffin. These residual waxes could possibly have advantages over refined paraffin as a soil treatment for water-harvesting catchments in that they are byproducts rather than an end product (constituting an energy savings), are slightly cheaper, and are more adhesive and less brittle. However, these residual waxes have high physical - chemical property variability which complicates testing for utility in water-harvesting. The lack of an easily obtainable ' characterization index ' is a particular deficiency. Upon laboratory testing, several of the residual waxes were found to be superior to refined paraffin in water-repellancy, structural stability, erosion and freeze-thaw resistance and ozone and ultraviolet radiation effects. The need for further laboratory and field testing was noted.

Effects of Rainfall Intensity on Runoff Curve NumbersHawkins, R. H. 15 April 1978 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1978 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 14-15, 1978, Flagstaff, Arizona / The runoff curve number rainfall- runoff relationships may be defined in two ways: (1) by formula, which uses total storm rainfall and a curve number, but not intensity or duration descriptors; and (2) rainfall loss accounting using a 4, rate and a specific intensity duration distribution of the function i(t) = 1.5P(5(1 +24t /T)-(1/2)-1) /T, where i(t) is the intensity at time t for a storm of duration T. Thus, the curve number method is found to be a special case of φ index loss accounting. The two methods are reconciled through the identity 1.2S = φT, leading to the relationship CN - 1200/(12 +φT). The effects of rainfall intensity on curve number are felt through deviations from the necessary causative intensity - duration curve. Some sample alternate distributions are explored and the effects on curve number shown. Limitations are discussed.

Srovnání účinků deště na starém a novém simulátoru dešťů / Comparison of the effects of rain on the old and new rainfall simulatorBanzetová, Diana January 2015 (has links)
This dissertation is focused to modeling of the rainfall in laboratory conditions by the rainfall simulator invented in VUT Brno. Results of the measuring are compared with measured values of the original rainfall simulator located in VVU VSH VUT in Brno by the Kninicky village in 1976-1980. Dissertation verifies rightness of substituting the natural rain with the rainfall simulator on bare soil in the original location, kinetic energy of the rain drops is substituted with the energy gained from the weight of the drops - the flow. Generally the dissertation determines the possibilities of the rainfall simulator's current location.

Effects of Brush to Grass Conversion on the Hydrology and Erosion of a Semiarid Southwestern Rangeland WatershedSimanton, J. R., Osborn, H. B., Renard, K. G. 16 April 1977 (has links)
From the Proceedings of the 1977 Meetings of the Arizona Section - American Water Resources Assn. and the Hydrology Section - Arizona Academy of Science - April 15-16, 1977, Las Vegas, Nevada / Increased nutritional and economic demands for agricultural products have dictated the need for greater and more efficient use of western grass forage. Vegetation manipulation is the quickest and most economical means of increasing forage. However , the hydrologic effects must be taken into consideration before embarking on a large scale vegetation manipulated program. This study discusses the hydrologic and erosion changes measured from a 110-acre semiarid watershed which was converted from brush to grass by root plowing and seeding. Significant changes were observed in rainfall-runoff relationships as average summer runoff was considerably in excess of predictions. Sediment yield also varied, and both of these results were tied to the change in vegetative cover and post conversion rainfall conditions.
