Grain-scale Comminution and Alteration of Arkosic Rocks in the Damage Zone of the San Andreas Fault at SAFODHeron, Bretani 2011 December 1900 (has links)
Spot core from the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) borehole provides the opportunity to characterize and quantify damage and mineral alteration of siliciclastics within an active, large-displacement plate-boundary fault zone. Deformed arkosic, coarse-grained, pebbly sandstone, and fine-grained sandstone and siltstone retrieved from 2.55 km depth represent the western damaged zone of the San Andreas Fault, approximately 130 m west of the Southwest Deforming Zone (SDZ). The sandstone is cut by numerous subsidiary faults that display extensive evidence of repeating episodes of compaction, shear, dilation, and cementation. The subsidiary faults are grouped into three size classes: 1) small faults, 1 to 2 mm thick, that record an early stage of fault development, 2) intermediate-size faults, 2 to 3 mm thick, that show cataclastic grain size reduction and flow, extensive cementation, and alteration of host particles, and 3) large subsidiary faults that have cemented cataclastic zones up to 10 mm thick. The cataclasites contain fractured host-rock particles of quartz, oligoclase, and orthoclase, in addition to albite and laumontite produced by syn-deformation alteration reactions. Five structural units are distinguished in the subsidiary fault zones: fractured sandstones, brecciated sandstones, microbreccias, microbreccias within distinct shear zones, and principal slip surfaces. We have quantified the particle size distributions and the particle shape of the host rock mineral phases and the volume fraction of the alteration products for these representative structural units. Shape characteristics vary as a function of shear strain and grain size, with smooth, more circular particles evolving as a result of increasing shear strain. Overall, the particle sizes are consistent with a power law distribution over the particle size range investigated (0.3 µm < d < 400 µm). The exponent (fractal dimension, D) is found to increase with shear strain and volume fraction of laumontite. This overall increase in D and evolution of shape with increasing shear strain reflects a general transition from constrained comminution, active at low shear strains to abrasion processes that dominate at high shear strains.

The triumphal arch motif in Sant'Andrea, Mantua: Respondeo and rhetoric in Alberti's architecture and theoryCarrer, Tomaso, School of Architecture, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
Leon Battista Alberti's church of Sant' Andrea in Mantua has been closely studied by many Renaissance scholars in relation to its layout, dimensions, proportions, chronology, style and aesthetics, as well as earning its place in both Alberti's corpus and the sweep of Renaissance architecture. The thesis investigates how eloquence is embodied in the sequential repetition of the triumphal arch motif between inside and outside. This thesis it is based on extensive and critical review of historical and theoretical literature. It marks a close examination of Sant?Andrea and to lesser extent San Francesco in Rimini, revisiting key ideas, texts and words. The principal finding of the thesis is that Alberti?s concept of respondeo, as developed in De Re Aedificatoria is the key to understanding the triumphal arch motif and its repetition in the interior. The thesis also comprehensively outlines the variety of contexts in which repondeo can be understood. This term, correlated to the passing of time and to rhetorical-based Albertian terms as decorum and convenio, means a 'sensitive suitability' between parts. The analysis of the triumphal arch motif of Sant?Andrea suggests that formalism has played a more important role in Alberti's design for this church than previously believed. This is by the motif's rigorous outline changing between the interior nave and the exterior fa??ade according to the observer's different visual perceptions. The rhetorical structure of the triumphal arch, in the way that it moves became from two to three dimensions in the fa??ade, seeks familiarity with the city's surrounding environment to establish simultaneity of actions. In this way, by joining the historical-religious point of references to a strategy of perception, the triumphal arch achieves public consensus. This rhetorical program is addressed especially by the patron of the church of Sant' Andrea Ludovico Gonzaga II also the ruler of Mantua with popular aspects of his public representations.

Wandering Bones. Tafonomy and Funerary Treatment in Mochica Tombs at San José de MoroThe focus of this study is a sample of human burials from the Precolumbian archaeological site of San José de Moro, Peru. This site is located in the coastal desert of northern Peru and this sample dates to the latter half of the Moche period (450 AD-750 AD). Many of the burials from this site demonstrate various degrees of disarticulation. Stratigraphic analysis has demonstrated that this disturbance cannot be the product of post-depositional forces. An analysis of the distribution of the bones within the tombs, and a review of the process of corporeal decomposition suggests that the disturbance happened before the bodies were placed in their tombs. The results indicate that the cadavers were wholly or partially mummified before burial, and that disarticulation ocurred as the brittle, mummified body was maneuvered into the tomb. The body was mummified either as a deliberate measure before transporting the corpse over long distances, or as a natural product of the curation of the body above ground in a dry environment, during an extended funeral ritual. This combination of archaeological and forensic analysis has yielded important insights into the burial practices of the Moche.

The Economic Context of Early Pottery Production in the Case of San Jacinto 1 / El contexto económico de la alfarería temprana en el caso de San Jacinto 1Oyuela-Caycedo, Augusto 10 April 2018 (has links)
San Jacinto 1, an archaeological site located in the savanna region of the north coast of Colombia, South America, reveals evidence for logistically mobile hunter-gatherers who made pottery and collected and processed plants from 5940 ± 60 BP until 5190 ± 40 BP (6000-5000 BC calibrated dates). The site is discussed in terms of the social and economic context of the early evidence of pottery in the New World. Social activities and aggregation are indicated and tied to the use of logistic mobility strategies within a restricted territoriality in a highly seasonal environment. Lithic technology also points to the intensification of plant processing as an early stage in the continuum leading to a dependency on food production. This is the first time that a special-purpose site of this kind has been reported for the American tropics.

Excavations at San Jacinto: A U-Shaped Temple in the Chancay ValleySan Jacinto is the largest U-shaped complex in the Chancay valley. By excavations in 1993 the author was able to propose a fourfold sequence based on ceramic typology and comparisons, especially with Ancon and Curayacu. In phase III evidence of contacts with other sites appear as well as the "Dragonian" style, also found at Ancon, Huacoy, Garagay and Chavin de Huantar, while in phase IV Janabarriu-ceramics seem to be dominant. These ceramic changes apparently are linked to architectural modification of a complex interpreted as the center of a social political system dominating the lower and middle Chancay Valley.
