The Effect of Residual Stress on the Post-Weld-Shift of A Fiber-Solder-Ferrule

The effect of residual stress on the post-weld-shift (PWS) of a fiber-solder-ferrule (FSF) under a cyclic thermal load is investigated in this thesis. By using the finite element software MENTAT and MARC, the stress distribution in this model of coupled thermal-elastoplasticity is adopted to solve. The temperature dependent material properties are employed to calculate the residual stresses and the thermal stresses of the solder in the solidification process. The PWS of a fiber and the stress distribution of a solder under different temperature cycles are also investigated in this study. The PWS calculated with and without considering residual stresses are compared with the measured data in this study. Results indicated that the effects of residual stresses introduced in the solder solidification can not be ignored. The temperature dependent material properties, i.e., the melting temperature , Young¡¦s Modulus, coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and yield strength at high temperature may affect the residual stress distribution and the PWS of the FSF significantly.

The Study of Post-Weld-Shift in Laser Welding Technique for Laser Module Packaging

Abstract In this thesis, we have studied the post-weld-shift (PWS) in laser welding technique for laser module packaging. The joining method for packaging of laser module by laser welding technique can offer a number of significant advantages. It provides strong joint strength, therefore, the packaging has good long-term stability. It also provides high-speed and high-volume production, and hence the packaging is potential low cost. However, the laser welding process has caused PWS of laser module, would decay the coupling efficiency of laser module. We investigate the weld-spot by using metallographic method. The PWS in stainless steel (SS304L) plate is studied experimentally and numerically. The metallographic results are in good agreement with the Finite-Element-Method (FEM) results that the PWS in x-y plane can be neglected. Based on the experimentally and numerically results of PWS in SS304L, we investigate the yield improvement of laser module packaging. The laser hammer technique was used to improve the coupling efficiency of laser module. The results show displacement of the z-axis is from 1 to 9 (£gm) that equals to the angle changes of upper parts of laser module from 0.38¡Ñ10-2 to 3.4¡Ñ10-2 (degree). Therefore, the coupling efficiency of laser module can be improved from 4 to 20 (%).

Application of Mean Shift to Real-Time Visual Tracking for a Deformable Object

This thesis presents a robust real-time active tracking system with a pan-tilt camera. The proposed visual servo framework is able to track a deformed object and maintain the target always inside the field of view. For the image processing, an efficient template matching and searching method using the mean-shift theory is developed. The robustness is achieved by appending the ratio histogram, a kernel function, and the template update to the framework when the target is deformed. Then the pan-tilt unit turns towards the target and keeps the target inside the field of view of the camera by feeding back the position information to a Kalman filter. Experimental results show that the presented scheme works successfully when the target is vague or concealed or deformed. The visual tracking task can also be accomplished even when a similar object crosses over the target. In addition, the refreshing rate can be up to 60 frames per second.

<p>Tidigare studier berör främst funktion, praktik, innehåll och relevans i den muntliga rapporten. När det gäller omvårdnad i den muntliga rapporten hittades ingen vetenskaplig litteratur. Författarna i den här studien anser att omvårdnad är lika viktig som medicinen i patientvården. Syftet är att belysa omvårdnad i den muntliga rapporten mellan sjuksköterskor. En observationsstudie utfördes på sex avdelningar på ett sjukhus i Skaraborg. Data spelades in på band för att transkriberas, analyseras och tolkas. Resultatet visar att omvårdnad förekommer i den muntliga rapporten mellan sjuksköterskor genom sex huvudteman och tio underteman. Det rapporterades om patienternas tillstånd, vilka åtgärder sjuksköterskorna utfört och vad sjuksköterskorna som skulle påbörja sitt arbetspass skulle tänka på och göra under sitt skift. Studien tolkar att den information som sjuksköterskor delar med varandra under en rapport är omvårdnad då den möjliggör en god patientvård.</p> / <p>Prior studies mainly concern the function, practice, content and relevance of the shift report. When it comes to care in the shift report no scientific literature were found. The authors of this study consider care to be just as important as medicine in the patient care. The aim of this study is to shed light on care in the nurse-to-nurse shift report. An observational study was carried out in six divisions at a hospital. The data was recorded on tape to be transcribed, analyzed and interpreted. The results imply, through categorization into six main themes and ten sub themes, that care is evident during the nurse-to-nurse shift report. Patient’s condition and which actions the nurses had executed were reported, as well as what the nurses, who were about to start their work shift, had to perform and keep in mind. The information being shared in the nurse-to-nurse shift report is in this study interpreted as care seeing that it make a good patient care possible.</p>

A modeling trade-off forecasting environment for military aircraft sustainment

One of the overarching goals for military aircraft sustainment is to keep a high proportion of aircraft available despite the need for maintenance. Traditional solutions to this problem require conservative resource estimates, but this is costly. In recent years an overall paradigm shift towards affordability has created pressure to find other options for achieving high values of fleet level metrics. Past efforts at increasing affordability have had mixed success, and as a result such strategies need to be tested early on in the lifetime of a product, ideally before the product is ever fielded. In order to provide the ability to evaluate the effects of sustainment decisions such as different maintenance paradigms and cost goals, this thesis develops a sustainment modeling environment, known as Sustain-ME, to facilitate open analysis based on the best information available. The goal of creating Sustain-ME is to allow decision makers to define a sustainment scenario and compare different decisions of interest on a common basis. Sustain-ME is a discrete event simulation, which means it efficiently provides a reasonable prediction of operational behavior. This thesis describes the information used to construct Sutain-ME, including the assumptions made for many of the parameters of the modeled sustainment process. It next verifies the behavior of the different elements that make up the sustainment model including operations, maintenance, maintenance paradigms, and the supply chain. Finally a methodology for using SustainME is defined and a demonstration of the types of studies Sustain-ME was built to perform is shown. The demonstration compares three different maintenance paradigms: reactive maintenance, condition based maintenance, and a novel CBM paradigm known as CBM-MiMOSA.

Demographic shift share analysis : long-term demographic change along the DART Red Line / Long-term demographic change along the DART Red Line

This report explores the long-term demographic changes occurring near Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) stations. The study area chosen to employ the shift share method consists of two segments of DART stations along the Red Line in Dallas, Texas. The downtown DART study area consists of census tracts surrounding light rail stations: Cedars, Convention Center, Union Station, West End, Akard, St. Paul, and Pearl, and the DART suburban study area consists of census tracts around the following stations: City Place, Mockingbird Station, Lovers Lane, Park Lane, Walnut Hill, Forest Lane, and LBJ/Central. Using the shift share method with demographic data obtained through the US Census Bureau from 1990 and 2005-2009 American Community Survey estimates, this analysis illustrates demographic changes over time as a result of light rail transit investments. The results indicate that demographic characteristics of residents have changed considerably since the introduction of light rail in Dallas. Although the growth trends in the DART neighborhoods are comparable to the growth trends of the city, the DART census tracts on average have experienced greater increases in population, attracted an influx of highly educated residents with higher household incomes, and experienced significant increases in high-density development surrounding transit stations. For the most part, growth has been stronger locally than on a citywide level, and these trends have occurred most noticeably in the downtown DART neighborhoods, where transit and financial measures have sparked a development boom in which total population and housing units have grown by the hundredth and even thousandth percentile. Additionally, these demographic changes create unintended consequences that affect people of varying socio-economic statuses. Although the shift of highly educated, wealthier individuals in neighborhoods creates a greater social mix among residents, lower-income residents of these transit neighborhoods quickly get priced out of their neighborhoods. / text

Characterization of cluster/monomer ratio in pulsed supersonic gas jets

Cluster mass fraction is an elusive quantity to measure, calculate or estimate accurately for pulsed supersonic gas jets typical of intense laser experiments. The optimization of this parameter is critical for transient phase-matched harmonic generation in an ionized cluster jet at high laser intensity. We present an in-depth study of a rapid, noninvasive, single-shot optical method of determining cluster mass fraction f_c(r,t) at specified positions r within, and at time t after opening the valve of, a high-pressure pulsed supersonic gas jet. A ∼ 2 mJ fs pump pulse ionizes the monomers, causing an immediate drop in the jet’s refractive index n_jet proportional to monomer density, while simultaneously initiating hydrodynamic expansion of the clusters. The latter leads to a second drop in n_jet that is proportional to cluster density and is delayed by ∼ 1 ps. A temporally stretched probe pulse measures the 2-step index evolution in a single shot by frequency domain holography, enabling recovery of f_c. We present the theory behind recovery of f_c in detail. We also present extensive measurements of spatio-temporal profiles f_c(r, t) of cluster mass fraction in a high-pressure supersonic argon jet for various values of backing pressure P, and reservoir temperature T. / text
