The structure of genetic groups is a technique that allows that animals with unknown paternity be included in breeding programs. The ways these groups are formed are still arbitrary, which makes it important to study formation methodologies of genetic groups aiming an appropriate framework for the evaluation of livestock in animal breeding programs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to define the structure of genetic group suited to genetic evaluations, comparing them regarding changes in the effective efficiency of the process of animals with unknown parentage. The characteristics studied were: weaning weight, post-weaning weight, post-weaning weight gain, scrotal circumference at 18 months of age and visual muscularity score at 18 months of age. Three scenarios were simulated from a database consisting only of complete pedigree animals (control group). The first had 30% of animals with identification of father off, the second with 50% and a third with 70%. The training strategies additive genetic groups were: the farm of birth of the animal with unknown parentage; birth year (SAFRA) and the concatenation of year of birth and birth farm (FAZSAFRA). The variance components were calculated for the data bank control program by VCE and breeding values were predicted using PEST software, with two structures of animal models that differ by the inclusion or not of the fixed effect of additive genetic group. The definition of the structure of genetic group suitable for genetic evaluation of animals was based on the efficiency of selection and comparison of estimated breeding values to the \"control\" breeding values and the classification of animals, while control animals were assumed to have the maximum response to selection whereas the choice of any other group of animals results in a reduction thereof. The results demonstrated that the additives genetic groups provide an improvement in the genetic prediction of animals with unknown paternity. Strategies that provided values closer to those of the control group were SAFRA and FAZSAFRA and even with similarity values, strategy SAFRA was superior in selecting the best animals.

Impact of sire PTASCS on mastitis resistance and measures of daughter performanceCranford, Jamie Layne 04 May 1999 (has links)
Research to determine the impact of PTASCS on incidence of mastitis, daughter response to infection, and other measures of daughter performance was conducted using data on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd lactation Holsteins obtained from the Virginia Tech herd and from VA DHI herds. Overall correlation of PTASCS to lactation average SCS ranged from 0.13 to 0.17 across all data sets. Correlations between PTASCS and 1st lactation SCS measures were higher than those between PTASCS and SCS in later parities, but higher correlations were found between 2nd and 3rd lactation SCS measures than between 1st and later parities. Correlation of lactation average SCS and incidence of clinical mastitis was 0.41. Regression of lactation average SCS and averages of test day SCS measures on PTASCS was significant in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd lactations. All significant relationships were linear and equal or close to 1.0. Relationships between PTASCS and number of cases of clinical mastitis (.79), number of treatments (2.0), number of days treated (7.0), changes in SCS from beginning to end of a lactation (-.26), and the slope of changes in test day SCS with DIM (5.9x10-4) were significant only in 1st lactation. No significant relationships between PTASCS and measures of clinical mastitis or variation in test day SCS measures were found in 2nd or 3rd lactations. Heavy cull rates imposed on 1st lactation cows in the Virginia Tech herd explained lack of significance in the later parities in the herd study, but results in following analyses indicated that measures of SCS in 1st and later parities may be two different, but correlated, traits. The greatest impact of PTASCS on measures of daughter performance and profit was the negative relationship between PTASCS and herd life. Increased PTASCS resulted in the decreased ability to survive involuntary culling, and thus decreased opportunity for lifetime yield and profit. Selection on PTASCS should be an effective method of reducing incidence of clinical mastitis, lactation average SCS, and variation in SCS, or response to infection. The response, however, may be different in 1st lactation than in later parities. / Master of Science

Sire Behaviour in the Context of Novel Males: The Sire Protection EffectMurji, Tasleem 08 1900 (has links)
Female mammals are known to exhibit pregnancy failure when exposed to
various stimuli during the implantation phase of pregnancy. When newly inseminated
female mice are exposed to novel males in the absence of the sire, implantation is
disrupted. This phenomenon is known as the Bruce effect. When females are exposed to
novel males in the presence of the sire, pregnancy failure does not occur. This latter
effect has been referred to as the sire protection effect. In these studies we examine the
nature of female and sire behaviour in the context of novel males. Female interactions
with novel males significantly decrease in the presence of the sire. This reduction in
female-novel male interaction in seen irrespective of whether sires are free or confined
within the female's cage. Novel-male exposed females exhibit pregnancy failure and this
pregnancy block is removed when either free of corral-confined sires remain present in
the cage. Finally, sires are highly motivated to engage in aggressive conflicts with novel
males both in the presence and absence of the pregnant female. Sires were observed to
behave aggressively towards novel males through a wire-mesh grid and in this context
were able to inflict severe wounding upon novel males through the wire-mesh partition.
In a direct exposure paradigm, sires were also witnessed to exhibit this aggression and
were found to initiate and win all conflicts with novel males.
The sire protection affect is likely to involve a complex of both pheromonal and
behavioural cues. Sire aggression towards novel males, pheromonal communication and
limited behavioural interaction between the sire and the female, and reduced femalenovel
male interaction are all likely components of the effect. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Avaliação da Proporção Sexual de Embriões Desenvolvidos In Vitro e de Progênie a Campo de Touros Jovens. / Evaluation of the Sex Ratio of Embryos Developed In Vitro and in Field Progeny of Young Sires.Elias, Fernanda Prado 01 August 2011 (has links)
Some of the main problems that affect the in vitro production of embryos is the variation among bulls in relation to fertility and the greater birth of male embryos. Many factors can change the ratio 1:1 between the genders, both in the in vitro production of embryos and in the method of artificial insemination. To try to change this sex ratio in vitro, we studied at first, the variation among bulls in the development of female and male embryos, the blastocyst-stage distributed in young blastocyst, blastocyst, expanded blastocyst and hatched blastocyst and the proportion male: female in relation to the blastocyst stage. For this, oocytes were collected from slaughterhouse ovaries and matured in maturation medium in an incubator for 24h. Viable sperm from 17 bulls belonging to the Breeding Program of Nellore, obtained by Percoll gradient centrifugation were used for in vitro fertilization. After 12 hours, the presumptive zygotes were cultured in culture medium and cumulus cells in an incubator. After 168 hours of in vitro fertilization the viable embryos in the blastocyst stage were classified. The determination of the sex of the blastocysts was performed by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) using a Y-specific sequence and bovine autosomal sequence visualized in agarose gel. Data analysis was conducted using the Statistical Analysis System software. Later, to obtain more knowledge about the animals tested, data was collected from the field progeny of these animals and established the sex ratio of the offspring produced by the method of artificial insemination, natural mating and possible correlations with quantitative traits. Differences between bulls were observed relating to the proportion of genders at the initial stages of blastocyst and expanded blastocyst. No deviation was observed in the sex ratio in relation to the bull used for in vitro production of embryos and offspring in the field. Our data suggest that it is possible to change the male to female proportion in production systems of in vitro embryos through the selection of the blastocyst stage for transfer, and also suggest that bulls show variation in relation to the in vitro development of male and female embryos, depending on the blastocyst stage.

Reproduktionsmanagement in MilchviehbetriebenPrzewozny, Agnes 07 March 2011 (has links)
Brandenburger Milcherzeugerbetrieben erhoben. Die Fragen betrafen u.a. / This study provides a comprehensive characterization of current management methods of dairy farms, focusing on herd fertility. Relations of management factors to fertility and milk performance are analyzed following a bio-social approach. In 2007 a questionnaire survey including face-to-face interviews and direct observations was conducted in 84 East German dairy farms, mostly located in Brandenburg. Questions referred to housing, stress prevention, and management of herds, reproduction and personnel. Herd performance data stem from milk performance testing in 2007. Data analysis combined qualitative and quantitative methods. Calving interval (CI) and 305-day-milk yield (MY) were used as dependent variables. Mean values of herd size, CI and MY were, respectively, 306.3 cows (+/-238.3), 413.2d (+/-18.73d) and 8555kg (+/-1132.9). CI tended to decrease with increasing MY (r=-0.188, p=0.10). MY increased with rising herd size (r=0.29, p=0.01). Floors were wet and slippery in 71.25% of farms. In these farms CI tended to be longer (+16.6d, p=0.055) compared to farms with dry and non-slippery floors. Lying areas were in 29.9% of the farms dry and flexible. Here MY was higher (+1110kg, p=0.011) than in farms with wet and hard lying areas. A clear assignment of responsibility for heat detection showed a trend of decreasing CI (-6.3d, p=0.129). Female herd managers with academic qualification achieved a higher MY than likewise qualified men (+752.9kg, p=0.005), with no difference in CI. Thus, herds managed by highly qualified women showed a better MY:CI ratio. Employee motivation by material and social incentives or by allocating responsibility to workers and pursuing good communication was related to higher MY than motivation by performance pay alone (+1000kg, p=0.009); CI remained unaffected. Performance pay had no positive effect on targeted parameters. Results underscore the need for improved housing and recommend further study into personnel management in dairy farms.
