Virtual Routing and Forwarding (VRF) - och dess påverkan på en routers processor

I dagsläget används VPN allt mer bland företagen för att ansluta till olika nätverk. Detta kan medföra att routingtabellen blir alltför stor och det kan i sin tur påverka processorbelastningen på routern som delar ut alla VPN.Detta arbete hade som syfte att granska om det är några märkbara prestandaskillnader på en routers processor när olika routingprotokoll används tillsammans med VRF. Protokollen som detta arbete tog upp var BGP, OSPF och RIP.Tre olika nätverks-scenarier skapades där olika tester genomfördes för de tre nämnda routingprotokollen. Det gjordes även tester på routrar när ingen VRF användes för att jämföra resultaten. Testerna bestod av att granska processorbelastningen på routrar när det fanns många rutter i nätverket och när nätverket var belastat med trafik.Testernas visade att skillnaden mellan BGP och OSPF inte är särskilt stor, men när RIP användes så steg processorbelastningen markant när nätverket hade många rutter. Om däremot VRF användes tillsammans med RIP så sjönk belastningen avsevärt på vissa routrar.

Design och implementation av övervakningssystem med Nagios / Design and implementation of monitoring systems with Nagios

Sherpas behöver en ny plattform för att kunna övervaka enheter på deras nätverk. Plattformen de ville använda sig av var Nagios Core och skulle kunna övervaka resurser som CPU, disk, minne, bandbredd, webbservrar och SQL servrar. Lösningen skulle även förenkla konfiguration av nya värdar. Tillägg för en översiktspanel och grafer skulle också installeras för att ge en bättre överblick. Lösningen installerades i en testmiljö med en stationär dator, bärbar dator med 3 virtuella maskiner och en switch. Nagios Core installerades på den stationära datorn. NRPE användes som Linux agent och installerades på Nagios servern och även på alla Linux servrar som skulle övervakas. Nagios insticksprogram installerades ocksåför att kunna övervaka de nödvändiga resurserna. Övervakning av Windows maskiner utfördes via WMI. För att övervaka switchar och routrar skapades ett eget insticksprogram iBash för att kunna ge de funktioner som krävdes. För att förenkla konfigurationerna av nya värdar användes värdgrupper. Varje värdgrupp är länkad till en tjänst och när en ny värd ska övervakas är det möjligt att skriva in de värdgrupper som hör till respektive tjänst. Lösningen användes endast i en liten miljö och insticksprogrammet som skapades kan innehålla eventuella problem som inte har upptäckts än. Programmet skapades också med ett programmeringsspråk som inte var lämplig i situationen och bör bytas ut i framtiden. Inget fokus på säkerhet gjordes och är något som måste implementeras i framtiden. / Sherpas needed a new platform to monitor machines on their network. The platform they wanted to use was Nagios Core to monitor resources like CPU, disk, memory, bandwidth, webservers and SQL servers. The monitor solution also needed a simple way to add new hosts. Addons for a dashboard and graphs was also needed for a better overview. The monitor platform was installed on a test environment with a stationary computer, laptop with 3 virtual machines and a switch. Nagios Core was installed on the stationary computer. NRPE was used as the agent and was installed on all Linux servers. Nagios plugins was also installed to be able to monitor the required resources. Monitoring of Windows machines was done with WMI. To monitor switches and routers a plugin was created with Bash. To simplify configuration for new hosts, host groups were used. All host groups are linked to a service and when new hosts are created the required services are monitored by selecting all the host groups which the services are linked to. This decreased the time required for configuring new hosts. The solution was only done with a very small environment and the plugin that was created could contain a few bugs that can be detected in the future. The program also used a programming language not suited for the situation and should be changed in the future. No focus on security was done and is something that should be implemented in the future.

Diplomová práce popisuje vytvoření aplikace pro monitorování síťových zařízení. Výsledky jsou zobrazené jako grafické uživatelské rozhraní společně s vykreslenou topologií. Aplikace je z velké části napsána v jazyce Python. Pro získávání informací z topologie jsou využity protokoly SNMP a SSH. Hlavní cíl je vytvořit aplikaci, která monitoruje síťová zařízení a vykresluje tuhle topologii do grafického uživatelského rozhraní. Tato aplikace reaguje dynamicky na změny v monitorovací topologii.

Sběr dat o síťové komunikaci ze zařízení síťové infrastruktury / Acquisition of communication statistical data from network infrastructure devices

The diploma thesis describes theory that is needed for application development for acquisition of communication statistical data from network infrastructure devices. Aplication is called SDSKSI. The project compares protocols suitable for this purpose. Finally SNMP protocol was chosen because it is the most common in network devices. SNMP is described in detail. Each SNMP operation has its own practical demonstration. In the project there is also described MIB database and data types of MIB objects. Application is able to create network topology. Then administrator of network can imagine how the network looks like. For each device that support SNMP protocol are periodically collected and stored statistical data which can be exported to the file. For application development were chosen programming languages according to several criteria. Content of the laboratory exercise is presented. At the end of the project there are some system solutions for collecting statistical data. Diploma thesis contents two attachments. The first is containing the full text of laboratory task. The second is DVD disc. Disc is containing ready to boot aplication SDSKSI.

Nové metody zajištění kvality služeb v datových sítích / New Methods of Quality of Service Assurance in Data Networks

The doctoral thesis is focused on a research in the area of the quality-of-service support technologies in data networks. The current modern communication networks cannot operate correctly without an effective tool allowing differentiated treatment for various network traffic classes. Looking at the current trends in this area it turns out that the technology of Differentiated services is currently the most widely used mechanism for QoS assurance in data networks. The major part of this doctoral thesis concerns the design of a novel QoS system which offers a solution for one of the main problems of DiffServ technology. This disadvantage lies in the missing cooperation between the end station and edge node of the DiffServ domain. To overcome this limitation the system proposed introduces an improvement which enables the user application to actively participate in the resource reservation process by direct configuration of the DSCP value in the IP header of its own packets. This functionality is based on the identification of DiffServ configuration parameters available in the edge router. To retrieve the information required from network component the well-known SNMP protocol has been chosen, which has direct access to the components’s configuration stored in the MIB database. On the basis of this theoretical proposal several simulation scenarios have been created and analysed. The results show that the system designed presents an efficient solution for the mentioned problem of DiffServ. They also give good assumptions for the successful implementation of this system into a real environment.

SNMP Application for the MINT Router (Walkstation II project)

The purpose of the Walkstation II project is to create a testbed for a wireless communication system with access to the Internet. The Mobile INTernet (MINT) router is a core element of this project. Most of the routers and many other nodes of today's Internet support network management. This includes the remote control of various parameters which caracterize the status of physical interfaces, protocols and many other objects. The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) which was used in the current work is a standard protocol of the TCP/IP suite. All the managed nodes of the Internet have a common set of management capabilities. Their implementation is available in software development packages. The management of mobile stations requires a new set of management capabilities. They will allow for the control of mobility support and the radio links. The current work consists in adapting the set of standard SNMP capabilities to the MINT router and of the creation of a set of new capabilities specific to the MINT. / <p>I do not know the number of university credits, but entered it as 30 ECTS. This was an exchange student and I do not know if they were actually registered at KTH.</p>

This master’s thesis deals with a complex solution for the visualization of network topology. The first part of thesis describes the operation principle of LLDP protocol, which was chosen as a tool for retrieving informations from network traffic based on the requirement of the assignment. There is a detailed description of the LLDP protocol implementation in C language to METEL s.r.o. network products. The second part deals with possibilities of graphical interface in software SIMULand intended for managing network devices. It describes tools expansion process for the visualization of the network topology. In conclusion, the results of testing final solution are introduced.
