An optical investigation of DISI engine combustion, fuel spray and emissions at cold-start temperatures

Efthymiou, Petros January 2015 (has links)
Particulate number (PN) standards in current and future emissions legislation pose a challenge for designers and calibrators during the warm-up phases of cold direct injection spark ignition (DISI) engines. To achieve catalyst light-off conditions in the shortest time, engine strategies are often employed that inherently use more fuel to attain higher exhaust temperatures. These can lead to the generation of locally fuel-rich regions within the combustion chamber and hence the formation and emission of particulates. To meet these emissions requirements, further understanding of the DISI in-cylinder processes during cold-start are required. This thesis investigates the effect of cooling an optical research engine to temperatures as low as -7°C, one of the legislative test conditions. A high-speed 9 kHz optical investigation of the in-cylinder combustion and fuel spray along with in-cylinder pressure measurements was completed with the engine motored and fired at 1500 rpm during combustion conditions that were essentially homogeneous and stoichiometric. Results showed significant differences between the flame growth structures at various operating temperature conditions with the notable presence of fuel-rich regions, which are understood to be prominent areas of particulate formation. Measured engine performance parameters such as indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) and mass fraction burned (MFB) times correlated with the observed differences in combustion characteristics and flame growth speed. It was shown that flash boiling of the fuel spray was present in the fully heated engine case and significantly reduced the penetration of the spray plume and the likelihood of piston crown and cylinder liner impingement. The flow and combustion processes of a transient production cold start-up strategy were analysed using high-speed particle image velocimetry (HSPIV). Results highlighted a broad range of flame structures and contrasting flame stoichiometry occurring at different times in the start-up process. Turbulent flow structures were identified that have an effect on the fuel spray development and combustion process as well as providing a path for cold-start emissions reduction. PN and transient hydrocarbon (HC) emissions were measured at cold conditions to further elucidate the effect of operating temperature and correlate emissions data with in-cylinder measurements. A clear link between the quantity and size range of particulate and HC emissions and operating temperature was shown and the precise in-cylinder location of HC emissions, caused by fuel impingement, was inferred from the HC emissions data.

Proposição de um método para avaliação do adicional de emissões veiculares em partida a frio

Hansen, Marcelo January 2008 (has links)
Atmospheric pollution from vehicle emissions is a serious environmental problem. The vehicle operation mode influences directly in the amount of emitted pollutants. When a vehicle begins its operation with the cold engine, called as cold start effect, the amount of emitted pollutant becomes considerably higher than when in stabilized conditions of engine’s temperature. Cold start effect are very representative in short travels, such as urban trips. This study proposes a method to estimate the amount and spacial distribution of the additional cold start pollutant emissions. This method was applied to Porto Alegre, Brazil, using traffic and local fleet data from a household travel survey of 2003. Emissions factors were based on a study of Brazilian fleet. The results from the method application showed that cold start emissions in Porto Alegre are higher in the morning peak and most of the cold start emissions are concentrated in the town center and its adjacencies. The results also showed that the catalyst fuel injection vehicles are the main responsible for the additional cold start emissions. However, old vehicles, without catalyst and equipped with carburetor, are the main responsible for the total, cold start and running emissions, CO and HC emissions in both analyses periods. Through the proposed method, it was possible to identify critical areas that need control actions of cold start emissions. The results from this study can assist planning and management of the environmental conditions deriving from vehicular emissions in urban areas.

Financial aspects facing start-ups during the go-to-market phase : Case studies of Swedish start-ups

Smirat, Daniel January 2018 (has links)
Abstract Swedish start-ups seem to efficiently develop new products and services but less successful when it comes to taking them to the market and launching them globally. This research aims to address this gap through investigating Swedish start-ups. In light of this problem, the author argues that there is a need for increasing knowledge regarding the financial success factors and challenges facing Swedish start-ups in the go-to-market phase. The research question is thus: What are the significant challenges and success factors affecting the financing of Swedish start-ups during the go-to-market phase? Four major challenges facing start-ups during the go-to-market phase are identified. These are lack ofsufficient capital, lack of support from the banking sector, lack of support from the regional public leveland, finally, regulations and legal issues. On the other hand, four success factors have been identified, which are support from private investors, shared financial private/public risk, efficient internal operationsand non-traditional financing methods. In order to facilitate the go-to-market financing, it is recommended that start-ups be established in a business incubator environment in order to have access to investor networks and other financial support. Besides, having investors with financial experience in the start-up boards increases the chances of success in the go-to-market phase. The banking sector in Sweden should also play a bigger role in the strategic issues in order to accelerate the start-up’s growth. For further studies, more knowledge regarding the underlying motivations of private capitalists, public funders and loan lenders is desirable. Furthermore, the business incubator’s role in facilitating the financing of start-ups and understanding how start-ups in different sectors should act to increase the rate of success are two important areas for future studies.  Keywords: start-ups, go-to-market, financing, growth, early growth, success factors

IN DIGITALIZATION WE TRUST ? : An exploration of the impact of digitalization on the trustworthiness of the leader in Dutch start-ups from the perspective of managers and employees

Cetrez, Zeynep, Van Dam, Primo January 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines what impact digitalization can have on the trustworthiness of the leader through the lens of managers and employees in Dutch start-ups. The study explores the intersection set of trust, leadership and digitalization. As there was no prior research on the research issue at hand, a model that incorporated a process of trust and its interaction with digitalization has been constructed by the authors. The model relied on previous research on models of the trust process and characteristics of digitalization in the light of leadership. First a theoretical framework is built through a literature survey. A qualitative inquiry through interviews was carried out in order to be able to analyze the trustworthiness of the leader. The objective of the authors during the research was to document how leaders and followers perceived a trustee (leader) in a trust process with digitalization involved. The analysis revealed that even though digitalization has pervaded our lives; its impact on the trustworthiness of the leader has remained limited so far. Empirical data from this research indicated that the impact of digitalization on the three attributes of trustworthiness of the trustee was the strongest: objectives and intentions, competence and integrity. There were also digitalization related implications that could be drawn from the accounts of the interviewees. Thesis findings contribute to a better understanding of the role of the leader in a trust process in digitalized organizational environments and encourage further research in the field of trust especially when digital technologies have become so pervasive in the work life.

The role of LinkedIn in Equity Crowdfunding

Järvinen, Siiri, Nguyen, Duc January 2018 (has links)
Traditional investment practices have been revamped with more and more modern methodsto fit entrepreneurial settings. The evolution of equity crowdfunding has created an alternative to venture capital, bank loans and business angels. Due its novelty, recent studieshave onlyfocusedon its mechanisms and financial regulations. We draw from crowdfunding concept and social theories to develop an understandingonthe connection between social media networkand equity crowdfunding success.Utilizingdata from LinkedIn and a leading equity crowdfunding platform in the Nordics, we explore the impact of social media network to funding campaigns’ success. We collected data on every company on the platform, and we collected data on the key members’ LinkedIn connections. The results propose that it is possible to predict certain types of success in equity crowdfunding based on the number of LinkedIn connections. This study contributes to existing literature by providing better understanding on another social network, LinkedIn, which is often connected to project pages on crowdfunding platforms. We contribute even for improved insight in decision making processes behind the investments; which is in high interest of entrepreneurs, investors and platforms

How does social media affect entrepreneurial leadership : A qualitative study on entrepreneur’s perceptions regarding social media as a tool for entrepreneurial leadership

Gratell, Philip, Dahlin, Carl Johan January 2018 (has links)
This thesis is about entrepreneurial leadership and how entrepreneurs are affected by social media. Our aim with this study is to investigate how social media affects entrepreneurial leadership. One of the main questions we are trying to figure out is, can social media be used as a tool for entrepreneurial leadership and if that is the case, how? To be able to answer the aim, the thesis takes a qualitative researched approach, we conducted individual face-to-face semi-structured interviews with entrepreneurs. The data from the interviews will be analysed using grounded theory coding with the approach of finding 1st order concepts to look for patterns in the data.  The 1st order concepts led us to the 2nd ordered themes, which became three aggregated dimensions; cast expander, leadership enhancer and new social context.   The result gave us a deeper understanding of entrepreneurial leadership and how the entrepreneurial leader perceives social media as a leadership tool. By combining our three aggregate dimensions, cast expander, leadership enhancer and new social context we were able to build a model of how these three dimensions intersect. What makes this model useful is that it gives us some insight into how social media affects entrepreneurial leadership
